Hey Kris,

We artists gotta watch out for each other. I don't know if you know this guy but it seams to me that he's snagged some of your artwork and has modified it and using it for his email posts. He's also got "RUBBERBAND MAN" script over the top of it. It's pretty obvious it's your stuff. Just thought I'd pass this along to you. If there's anyway I can help you with this let me know. If he gives you a hard time all of us on the board here should email him and give him a hard time!

Give me a large break to go with a side of psssshaaaa. The guy is using it as a sig picture, not promoting it as his own concept drawing. Pictures on the net are fair game as long as you aren't using it as advertising material, for monitary gain, or linking direct from someone else's web space. If you don't like it, put a big banner across the sample drawings on your website saying "Property of your name here" across the middle of the car. Disable right click on your site too...

I'm not saying it wouldn't be nice to ask permission first, but come on...:nopity:

Hey John, thanks for the heads up! I'm glad it's the Camaro concept, because now I get to send the Primedia law dogs after him! That's a lot easier!

I agree with that logic. I though he was using it for advertising like some people have before. I might let this one slide actually. It's just a sig picture. As long as he doesn't sell the images or claim he did them, I'm not too bothered by it.

Whether it's used for advertising or not it's still stealing. Tyler and I made a guy take down some artwork that he stole and changed and put it all over his site as a background. Needless to say, he took it down. I guess it's up to the individual. Maybe some people don't understand but when you use your talents and skills and spend hours creating something , you don't (atleast I don't) appreciate somebody taking it and using it for something of theirs. I wasn't going crazy over it - I would want somebody to atleast tell me about it. Just wanted to give Kris a heads up.

I think you were right John to tell Kris. Leave the decision up to him if he wants to pursue it.

I got an e-mail a few months ago that some guy was handing out business cards with Kris' rendering of my car on them. I contacted the guy who turned out to be a good guy who just rotated his cards with cool car pics. He wasn't promoting my car as his or anything like that, just liked the pic. I had no problem with that, but appreciated the time taken by the guy who e-mailed me about it.

I too have had a similar problem. Someone named Julio has decided to use pictures of my car as his own on www.cardomain.com. I have e-mailed them several times and asked that they correct the problem but have received no response.

This is a HUGE issue with the digital world. It gets really hard to define what is bad taste and what is legally wrong. It should be up to the artist or comissioner to decide how that work should be shown in public.

I have heard of many 3d artist having their images taken for use in video card manufactures in countries where there really no protection. It happens all the time, but doesnt make it right.

If you want more protection you might want to start to full watermark your image. It is a shape or name placed over the center of the image and it either darkens or lightens that area.
Pro-It makes it really hard for those to capture it and correct.
Con-Still can be "fixed" and some will find it is too distracting.

I've had another Coater(powder, ceramic, thermal coatings) Use images of mine and say they were his work. He had a message forum on his site. So I registered with my cecoatings name and made a few posts asking about thw work.

Then finally made a post stating who I was , that it was my work and asked him to take em all down. He didnt for about a month befor I drew up a legal letter.

I have since then started adding watermarks as mentioned above. Will it help? I dono but Im sure it will some.

I have no problem with the fack someone uses a picture for a BG, etc. but when You pawn it off as your work thats when It draws the line.

I don't think it's wrong for the guy to use one of Kris's renderings for an avatar. But I do think it was wrong of him to not ask permission first. This is essentially all the guy is guilty of. I'd let it slide but Kris should really start adding watermarks to his work to prevent this from happening again.

Watermarks on the digital stuff will work to an extent, but when Kris's stuff ends up in PHR or some such other rag, it's too easy to scan it.

I feel that if the guy's not using it for gain of money or recognition, it's no big. Yes, he should have asked first though.

The 5th Gen Camaro stuff was printed without my name even on it. I considered it property of PHR. I have since learned to put my name, site, and a copyright on all images I do. It's just smart. For avatars and such, I really don't mind. Whenever there's an e-bay auction using my pics to attract bidders, I put a stop to it though.

I realize it's hardly the same...but while surfing one day I noticed a picture of me racing my previous car on Coparts (the auto salvage people) in their headerphoto.

Now I didn't take the picture (I was a little busy at the time), but know who did (professional) and I also know Coparts hired some web designer to do their site....so it's too much trouble to say anything, even if I could...but I thought it was interesting how things are changing in today's world.

Here's the header photo....

BTW, this was taken at IRP during the 2003 NFME road racing event......
