September 18, 19 and 20 2009
Rain or Shine

Here we go again. It's time for another Run Thru The Hills event in Pigeon Forge TN. Bill Howell of MuscleRides.com (http://www.musclerides.com) has once again organized what promises to be an unforgettable event: the fifth annual Pro-Touring.com Run Thru The Hills, sponsored by Musclerides.com. Scheduled during the beautiful mid September weather of "God's Country" Tennessee, this event will feature a plethora of pro-touring cars and enthusiasts; autocrossing, drag racing and a cruise through the back hills at breakneck speeds--what more could a pro-touring enthusiast ask for?

Join us and experience what pro-touring is all about: three days filled with good times, good friends and of course, the meanest Pro-Touring cars around. This event is the perfect opportunity to safely test your car's performance on the autocross track and dragstrip as well as means of putting faces to the names you've chatted with all year on the forum. We're all aware of the enormous amount of hard work and preparation that goes into building a well sorted g-machine: this is your chance to show off what your car can really do.

This years event will be 3 days of fun, sun and pro-touring.

The basic schedule

Friday Sept 18 - Bill's back-road-boogie, "Run Thru The Hills"

The g-machine enthusiast's dream cruise: a twenty mile run through the premiere twisting roadways of the Smokey Mountains. Followed afterwards by "supper" at a location to be announced soon. Registration for the event opens at noon at the Mainstay Suites, and the cruise starts at 4:00pm sharp. Dinner will start at approximately 6:00pm

Saturday Sept 19 - **** SOLD OUT ****** Autocrossing at Smokies Stadium (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Knoxville+TN&ie=UTF8&ll=35.988659,-83.604648&spn=0.004158,0.007231&t=k&z=17&om=1).
Bill has managed to secure Smokies Stadium again as the location for the autocross event. The track layout will be fast and technical and is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

8am: Meet at Smokies Stadium for Autocross
Drivers meeting time TBA soon (about 8am)
Lunch details TBA soon
3pm: Autocross ends

Sunday Sept 20 - Drag racing at 411 Dragway.
Come on out and practice that '60 time in your g-Machine.

8am: Drag racing starts?
2pm: End event

We expect to see an increased attendance again this year, so sign up soon. Space is limited.

Take a look at the location of this year's autocross location: Smokies Baseball Stadium

https://www.pro-touring.com/events/rtth3/stadium-640.JPG

And the best part? It's inexpensive. Costs are a low $45 to participate in the autocross and only $15 for the drag racing!

Dinner will be $15 per plate.

(Additional donations will be accepted)

Bill has once again reserved 40+ rooms at the Mainstay Suites, the same hotel that hosted everyone the last few years. The location is ideal as it's close to Bill's house and shop; the hotel is very clean and its operators are truly great people: they pretty much give us the keys to the place and we will certainly use them. They are located approximately two blocks off the parkway and are accessible by backroads; with the Fall Grand Run also scheduled for the weekend of September 18th that's a good thing. There are several other good hotels in town, but they are always pre-booked for this particular weekend. I'd like to fill up this place as everyone is at the same hotel this way. There are not many rooms left, so book yours today if you still need one! Be sure you tell them you are with Pro-Touring group or they may tell you that they are full.

http://www.mainstaypigeonforge.com/

The Fall Grand Run, which is the largest car show of the year in Eastern Tennessee, is located just two blocks from the host hotel. There is plenty to see and do for your wife and children.

Vendor space at the autocross will be available this year. It will be $200 for a 20x75 space. Space at the drag strip is free, but is limited to those that participated in the vendor space at stadium.
It will also include two dinners for Friday night. The regular price will apply for vendor participating cars. If you are someone you know might be interested please contact Bill Howell.

**** The autocross is sold out! ****

Space is limited so click here to register! (https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/../events/rtth5/form.php)

This is unbelievable! I have 24 registered already, on the first day and most have pp me.
It is fun to think how much this event has grow in 5 years, and I can not wait til Sept.

Thanks everyone!

For those that missed the 1 in 60 thread, Jake's Hotrod Shop has donated a subframe for the event and will be our major sponsor this year. As these events grow, and sponsors come aboard to help with the expenses, we will hopefully be able to do other events. Several vendors have been so good to RTTHs over the years, and they are the ones that get the credit for making those first years a success. Now with new sponsorship every year, it really helps the bottom line. I really would love to look at maybe another new venue next year, and I promise if we do something it will be west of here...
Thanks again everyone for your participation and Melinda and I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Herb,
No luck on the 66 being ready. We thrashed pretty hard on it over the winter, but seems like we barely made any headway and now that the weather has improved we're back to working on the house project full time. Made some more suspension improvements on the wagon though. 66 done in 2010 will be our battle cry for sure! I need to start a thread on here about that build.

Hello, I just registered and am looking forward to the drive up from AL and running the autocross with you guys. I found out about this event from some co-workers who are Camaro guys and went to watch last year. I thought it would be fun to go up there with them this year, and bring my tiny little 1.3 to see how it measures up against the big blocks. Can't wait, I'm overdue for a vacation away from home, even if just for 2 days.

I think "race tire" and "street tire" classes are enough. We start creating classes and well have all the 67 Camaro's in a class, the 68 Camaro's in a class....

Bill Howell
07-30-2009, 03:20 PM
I have certainly taken alot of heat about changing the treadwear to 100. This is a tough call.
I know that other events allow 100, and some even lower. However, not everyone (including me) can buy a set of tires for every event. Goodguys uses 200 as their benchmark, and several of us compete in their events. Remember, at the present, BFG donates a set of tires to the winner of RTTHS. I have a hard time changing the rules as long as they are stepping up with that prize.

Thoughts???

BTW, the host hotel only has 18 rooms left, so if you have not made your reservations yet, you better do it soon. I honestly don't have time near the event to hunt rooms for everyone. If you miss out on rooms at Main Stay, you will be on your own to get a room yourself, plus you will miss out on being at THE HOTEL. Make your reservations now.

Tony Bolton
07-31-2009, 04:10 AM
100 would certainly be the cut off. The Nitto drag radials are 100 and I know alot of people that choose to run that tire on the back of the car for obvious reasons.

If 100 was allowed this late in the game, it wouldn't bother me, I just wouldn't want a 100-200 treadwear class....a 201-300 class....

Bill Howell
07-31-2009, 06:03 AM
Tony, I will never have the different classes like that. This TW rule already takes the fun out of the event for me somewhat. I did not start this to have more headaches, that is what the day job is for. This is supposed to be for fun, and I intend to keep it that way. We will only have the two classes, old and new.

01badz28
07-31-2009, 06:39 AM
I'd just add an all out class to whats already there, end of story. Its not eligible for KOTH, doesn't need free tires, or any recognition other than a $5 t-shirt, plaque, or some ink in the magazine write up.

No tire limit, no mod limits, no year or mfg. limits - just everything that doesn't fit into the existing category. Run what ya bring, and if didn't bring enough... Too bad.

I for one have been very thankful for BFG stepping up to this events and others with free tires. I support the 200 and above TW rules for the GG shows and RTTH as it keeps it more inline with the intent of street cars competing on street rubber. I know some will argue that they run 100 TW tires on the street but that is the exception not the rule.

I am competitive enough that I will buy and run whatever tires gives the best advantage but want to make sure we don't exclude the masses by making it so only a few people will have a chance of winning.

Bill Howell
07-31-2009, 10:26 AM
RTTHs has seemed to move from new verses old that is started out at. Simply because more of the protouring guys are stepping up now with their iron instead of the late models being the only ones there. I think we are going to move in that direction too with the rules. One class like has been mentioned, anything goes and one for TW200 an higher. Then we will have a 90s up class, for the new vette guys, etc. This will probably happen next year, with the TW200+ class being the one eligable for KOTH and prizes.

Just being able to place near the big boys, no matter what tire I bring, makes it great competition. ( oh and like golf it gives me an excuse :) )

Lets take the tires completely out of the equation. Bills vette would make a good platform to show driver ability. How about it Bill? just kidding..... or we could all pitch in on some local beater and put it to rest.

Now there's an idea...
After everybody shows off their building skills let a last event be about raw talent. Remember IROC where all the cars were pretty close to equal? If there's time (not likely) after all the cool cars go we could all take turns driving a clunker around the autocross track like an '89 Chrysler with bad shocks and bald 300+TW tires and compare ETs!:)

Tig Man
07-31-2009, 05:34 PM
Just because a number is on a specific tires dosen't nessarly mean that's what it is!!! Insiders in the industry will do a lot of things for advertising!! Ask any professional racer tires are everything! In cup racing years ago Goodyear had lot numbers on the tires and the select teams would get first choice and have the numbers on a pad when selecting them!! Seen it for years!!

bill, we're just glad you started inviting us to help out and run this event. headaches we don't need at this event....we get enough of those at the other local events.

now if those 'big dogs' want to run for something then i think we can accommodate them. there was some yank wrote up a couple of weeks ago that we could throw a little 'something' in the hat and winner take all.
that sure the heck beats a trophy which if the winner prefers he can use his new found gains and go by a trophy.

in the meantime i'll keep hoisting last years trophy..... :1st:

One thing for sure is we can count on Bill making the right call and setting the pace for the rest of the events going forward. These things are going to continue to grow and multiply so know that whatever direction is decided upon it will be to best fit the long term goals.

If there's time (not likely) after all the cool cars go we could all take turns driving a clunker around the autocross track like an '89 Chrysler with bad shocks and bald 300+TW tires and compare ETs!:)
We could just use my junk for that!

Hi Folks,

We are working out all of the details with Bill at MuscleRides, but we'll definitely have some good news to bring shortly, including an open house & shop tour at Keisler Engineering which is very close to the event.

We will have a couple of lifts available for you guys shaking out bugs also, and I'll see about having the Goodyear tire shop down the street be available as well.

Updates coming soon....

PS - We'll be driving our Paddle Shifted Engine Braking Kuda at the autocross and drag strip, too.

Just being able to place near the big boys, no matter what tire I bring, makes it great competition. :)

You ARE one of the Big Boys !!!

That's great news, Keisler rocks you guys! I bought my TKO600 kit to convert from an automatic from them a couple of years ago and had a few small issues that they (specifically Richard) resolved super fast! I shopped the competition and they won on all counts. I can't wait to tour their place! Count me in!

I'm sure looking forward to this. I have been working my a$$ off and haven't even driven my car since April. I'm going to be plenty rusty for this event. But it will be refreshing to see more than a bunch of Miatas and Minis running an autocross course for a change.

Adam - Looking forward to seeing the LT1 S10. Mark S. has told me alot about your ride.

If you are interested I will let you take my place in the AUTOCROSS event. I paid the 45.00 and am sure we could figure out a way for your car to represent me. Of course I'm only interested in getting my $45.00 back...so if you have any ideas please let me know. I don't want this registration to go to waste when there was such limited space to begin with. Please call me @ 870-926-4417 and ask for Ben.

I just hope the entire event isn't rain.. damn, does it ever stop out there?

You need to have an event here in SoCal.. nothing but sunshine..

Actually it only rains about once a week which keeps the wildfires to like, nothing a year...
Don't you wish it rained in "SoCal" every now and then just to keep the duststorms, smog and the multi-billion dollar brushfires from getting bothersome?

After reading Steve's post about a helmet he has for sale I started wondering, are helmets going to be required for the autox and/or drags?

Herb,
There is another post on here with the rules listed. Helmets are required for driver and passenger according to the misc. rules... I didn't have one so I bought a cheapo on ebay that looks like speed racer...
I'm excited!

Thanks Tommy! I thought I read that somewhere but couldn't remember. Old age is starting to tighten its grip I suppose!

I have a G-force open face I'll bring. Now I just need to find one for my passenger!

As time gets close, there are always people that can not come that have bought tickets. Right now I have three autocross available, so jump in if you want them. Remember, this is a rain or shine event so no refunds the day of the event, but for those that speak up now, and we can sell them, I have no problems with that.

Sorry Steve, I'm about two inches shy of being able to wear a XL!

No matter how I try to say that, it doesn't sound very flattering. :hmm:

I am bringing 2 cars but only signed up one car for the events so more people could enter. If there are no objections and space is still available the day of put me down for one of them and I will run the Mustang and Camaro in the Auto-x.
