View Full Version : Is there a cool way to signal "Cool Car"?

OK so, I was driving my Dodge Pickup home from work yesterday & I pull up next to a brand new Mustang Shelby on the highway. Me being a Muscle car guy I decided I would give a thumb-up to let him know I thought his car was cool. Well, He gave me an arrogant yeah I know, whatever half wave back. Shortly after this incident I visualized myself giving the guy the thumb-up & I thought to myself “WHAT A DORK” I must have looked like….
….. So, I ask you:
Is there a cool way to signal “Cool Car”?
Or is that a BIG NO-NO; should you just look & admire but, do not say anything?

I normally just don't say anything at all.
The other day (drivng my Camaro) I had a guy with a mullet driving a beat-up primered 4x4 '80s Chev pickup stick is hand out his window with a "hang loose" sign shouting "Yeah baby!" as he drove by. I lowered my head in shame. I guarantee you weren't as much of a dork as he was.

The subtle 2 finger lift off the steering wheel and slight nod works for me.

I do the same.
Unless I see another classic Pontiac while I am in my '68 Firebird, then they get the full thumbs up treatment and it is usually reciprocated. But this only works if you are in the "Pontiac Brotherhood", don't ya know. :geek:

If I make eye contact, I'll give them a nod. Thats about it though. Sometimes I'll give an on-coming car the thumbs up

Maybe that's where the barriar was broken & that's why I pointed out that I was in my 2002 Dodge pickup & NOT in my 1973 Mustang....

What's interesting is that Mustang drivers give a thumbs-up when they see another person driving a Mustang. Camaro drivers don't usually do this unless it's someone driving a first or early-second gen F-body. Hadn't noticed this much until I started driving the Shelby around.
I go with the hand wave or a thumbs-up signal if the car's cool or guy driving it is a "10+." I may be married but I'm not dead!!!

If it's a Camaro I turn and look the other way, if it's a Mustang I bow my head in condolence. Mopars, I start giggling.
But if it's Pontiac I jump up and down waving both arms, shooting hand pistols and moonwalking like an idiot.
Seriously though, my usual is a slight hand wave similar to the two fingers off the wheel.
We Car guys do need something, seem all the bikers do the low hand wave to each other.

some people feel as though since they own a fast car, they are better than you...it irritates me
on the other hand I was driving with 7 of my buddies in my car (it holds 8 so dont worry lol) and some guy pulls up next to us at a light in a brand new murcielago lp640 roadster....basically he had 8 teenage boys going gaga over it, we were telling the guy how nice a car it was...as the light turns green he pulled out his cigar holds it up, smiles and says thanks...then he flew off making us very very happy hahah...i like it when people are cool about it, he was and older gentleman who was driving it, and he drove it WELL lol
It's just the driver. Some people are very arrogant about their possessions. Most of the time the only reason they have that particular possession is so people will think highly of them.

I normally just give a nod, but may start doing the finger pistols and moonwalk. That was hilarious!!!

Funny seeing this thread, because I just took my 67 out for a little drive to test out the new Air Ride Technologies sway bar end links I had installed. Just before I got home there was some guy on the sidewalk coming towards me and I think he was on Rollerblades. He caught my attention and I glanced at him to see him looking really stoked with his fist in the air. I got a kick out of that.

Andy I got that once from a couple guys when I power slid my Cuda through a turn....it was hilarious. One guy was like "YAAAAWWWWWWWW" with his fist in the air. I think I saw them high fiveing each other in my rear view. LOL

One time at a stop light in my old Monte SS, a cop pulls up next to me, gives me a nod, I nod back and the light turns green. I dropped the hammer, front end lifts sky high - he's peeling out all over place and the on lookers are screaming and cheering us on....... ok none of thats true.
But I'll never acknowledge someone driving a car newer than 88. It's like showing up to a car show in your 93 convertable Mustang trying to win a trophy.

its been my experience that the "clean hands" car guys are arrogant and don't usually deserve acknowledgment. otherwise, I'll usually wait for a stoplight and say, "cool car".

Reminds me of a when I first bought my Camaro and was trailering it home. I was clicking along on 95 North when a suburban starts to pass me, the kids in the back were going ape$hit, thumbs up, yelling out the window, "nice car mister", "Dad, look at that Camaro". I was really flattered and surprised since these were like 11 year olds and they knew what type a car it was. Makes me think just maybe there's hope.
Then a few miles later I see a 90's Mustang GT pull along side with the black tinted windows half down and I hear him downsift to 3rd, does the back and forth playing aorund thing and then embarrisingly floors it and pulls away in a loud but unimpressive manner. I trun to my wife and laugh, saying WTF does this guy think I'm going to race him with my tow vehicle pulling a trailer and a 3800lb car! LOL! what a tool.
Point I'm making is, I qualify my thumbs up. For the most part anyone driving a nice muscle car will be grateful of your acknowledgement. Some exceptions with the older Vette crowd as they can be pompous. The newer muscle, I will wait till I see who's driving and anything else may even get my a$$, LOL!

the nod qnd two finger to any firebird or f-body. The occasional thumbs up for something especially awesome. A shaking head for mustangs... and if I have friends in the car, we all point and laugh at ricers. :poke:

I usually just wave and yell out the window for their girlfriend/wife to 'put 'em on the glass'.
LOL - I always wave at cool rides. Just because the guy was Le Douche, doesn't mean anything. Most guys probably feel stoked about the wave.
People come check out my car all the time - I don't mind a bit.

I'll roll the windows down to listen if it's a real built engine and if the driver is cool enough I'll get a tap on the throttle too! Generally I'll just do the two finger lift but I'm with the others, that moon walk arm waving is the hoot!
When I was bringing my Formula WS6 up from Miami, I had some teenager hang outside the car after passing me and my friend with wide eyes and dropped jaw. Guess he had never seen a WS6 LT1 4th gen

When I'm in my Ranger (yeah, go ahead and laugh), I'll rev it up a little at a stop light and get their attention... Usually, they'll give me funny look, then I just start laughing and half wave as they smoke me....
I love having a slow unflashy truck.... :pat:

I should probably mention that this is much more fun when we are in my mom's purple minivan than when we are in his truck. We call it the land rocket.
Or, more accurately, the LAAAAAAAAAANNNNDDDDDDD RRRROOOOOOOCCCKKKEEEEETTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!
There is nothing more fun than trying to catch races in a purple minivan. Turns out that chrysler vans will smoke the fronts all day long if you power brake it hard enough.
And in his defense, the danger ranger is faster than the land rocket.

interesting thread, funny too. I used my chevelle as a dailey driver and get compliments on it dailey. These cars that we own are out of the norm. Car lovers and not just love the look of classics. I take them as compliments and wave my hand. feels good, your hard work is rewarded in a sense.

LMAO that just made my day. F****** HILARIOUS!!!! We need a smiley character/face that does that.
Usually I give the . I've noticed that the older folks love it and respond most of the time but the youngsters act like asses and either want to race, ignore you and rev like their s*** doesn't stink, or occasionally appreciate you for acknowledging them.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I did. Came out of a corner a little sideways, up shifted then got into the throttle and the blower started screaming. You can seriously hear the blower whine over my exhaust from far away.
Hey, it's too bad Air Ride isn't paying me to advertise, LOL. Those end-links really are a sweet item, though. They are WAY beefier than the ones that came with my AME subframe swaybar kit, and it's nice to know that they will be bind-free even under extreme cornering. From my seat of the pants evaluation it seems that they have increased roll stiffness a bit, which is just what I wanted.

Most of the responses I got after getting my car on the road (the first time) were when people were next to me at intersections it usually turned into a conversation. When I did get the thumbs up I'd usually just wave back; personally I always thought a head nod was sufficient.

I do kind of a low hand wave? I bought a new hog in 1993, I was 19. I started doing a low hand, two fingers down, palm out peace sign? Why, I have no freaking IDEA? I never thought about it at all until this thread? I don't remember if it was used in Easy Rider, or if I never seen it? This is killing me, I am gonna watch Easy Rider again and see if this is why? Maybe after that I will seek some physhiactric help................................:lurk:

I recall doing a brakestand in my 77 Catalina 4-door with the studs in my tires sparking on the road and the car filling with smoke. The guy in the 72 Nova laughed his butt off. Think he appreciated it. Well since neither of my cars are on the road, I get no looks in my Mountaineer, even though it is SWEET! I usually give a thumbs up to nice carsHopefully I don't look like too much of a dork! If the drivers a tool, the thumbs up is followed by the bird!

I was cruising through Frerport Maine on my way to work, when I see a guy in a yellow Pantera stopped in the opposite lane. I give him the "very enthusiastic" Thumbs up. He responded by ping-ponging the tach against the rev limeter like a madman. The sound of that 351 through a canister muffler and quad tips scared the crap our of everybody in town. What a dude. No need to be arrogant. I peed a little.

I'll do a little wave to any 69/70 Mustang, but I'll wave to just about anyone. I'm just happy to see I'm not the only one driving mine!
It's not quite "The Wave" I do on my motorcycle to other riders, but I try to acknowledge everyone else's ride since most people notice mine. Most often I'll get a "Nice car mister!" from kids playing in the yard, to which I'll say thanks and chirp the tires a little. That usually gets them all excited!

Last year I was making a left out of a local cruise and I see a nice yellow mustang coming from the other direction, so I lay into it and get sideways, it turned out to be SN65 and a thumbs up. :) I normally do the two finger lift or a thumbs up.
