View Full Version : Sad News For Pro-Touring

Well,
Earlier in the year I posted that Cartech Books was out of Ford Restomod books and they would not be printing more.
Now the GM Pro-Touring book is on the chopping block. Slow sales of the GM Pro-Touring book for the last 12 months has forced Cartech to stop printing the book. They are completely out of stock on the GM Pro-Touring book. Other than retailers who currently have the book in stock (like Detroit Speed & Engineering and restoration shops)...I will be the only source from which to purchase the last remaining copies. I guess I should have titled the book "How to Modify your Camaro". Even though it's not specific to Camaros, the book may have sold better. Anything with "Camaro" in the title would have had a longer shelf life.
Don't put off getting a copy for too long.

Maybe the new "edition" could be "Pro-Touring Camaros and other Street Machines". Just an idea.
I hope it works out for you, I found your book to be pretty good.
I bought mine a couple years ago now. Very well written and a great read. Thanks for writing it Tony.

Kinda sad to hear as the whole pro-touring thing is kind of a niche market. It was nice to see a book dedicated to it. I have my copy and I got my dad a copy too.

Tony , Could you re-title it and get another publisher to print and market it ?
Maybe the same people that are doing " Unfair Advantage " .

Tony,
It's time for a new cover and title. Call it the second addition. Edit some pages and add 10 new ones.

That would be great, but I'd have to print it and distribute it myself...that's A LOT of work and $$$$$. Cartech isn't investing money in the subject for a second run.

There are self publihing deals like Lulu- you might want to talk to Kurt Bilinski(?)- Carbon fibre, Honda powered tube frame original Mini- He wrote and self published a book (kimini.com) about how he did it. Basically, the cost of the book rises a little, but my understanding is it's publish on demand.

Tony I still say your next endeavor should be an LS1 conversion book or even a book on modifying Gen III engines period. So much has changed since the first books came out.

Hey Tony,
That's a great idea! That's why Cartech has already done it. It will hit the stores later this year. I wasn't fast enough. DOH!
:)
Maybe I'll do one on turbochargers or something fun like that. :)

I just got my last shipment of the last of inventory of GM and Ford Pro-Touring books from Cartech. I had completely run out of the GM's, but I have some extra books to sell now (GM and Ford). Once these are gone, that's it. :pat:
Thanks for your support over the years,

Do you get the rights back?
If so, it might not be that hard to call the printing house (as opposed to the publisher, they're often different) that did the first edition and have them run off a few more as the demand warrants.
Good luck!

Well, the printer is in China and I don't speak Mandarin or Cantonese.
If anything I'd see if I can get the "layout" from SA Design and then reprint it with complete up to date information on new parts...but then I'm not sure people are interested enough to buy a book they have with about 10% changes.

:) Yep. The toughest thing is the non-internet-based book stores are getting killed by Amazon when it comes to automotive book (not magazine) titles...I'm guessing it's not just automotive titles too, but that part would only be speculation.

Hey Eric,
Very few purchase both books, so I never configured the site to do that. The ones who have simply purchase on separate invoices, then I put both books in the shipping package and give you a $5 refund. It's the purchase than pays you back! :)
Thanks,

Thanks for the order. I just put them in the mailbox. That's cool that you're going to have them available for your customers to read.
What's up with your website? I couldn't get any of your project pictures to work. :)

Terry Sawyer. He has had the Cobra since high school, and the Ranchero for years. The Ranchero has a long lean look that would look great lowered with wider rubber. Thanks Tony.

Hey Dave,
In my haste of getting the book in the mail I signed the book and wrote a note to Terry but forgot to put Terry's name in the book. I can fix that if you need me to.

Hi Tony! Just ordered my GM pro-touring book, thats sucks to hear that they are going out of print. Put what ever you want on my book, ya gotta love a guy named Tony , right? Good luck in the future and who knows, maybe it will come back as a reprint. Looks like its a great book I wish I had it when I was building my 72 Z28 Camaro. Would have helped me greatly Im sure. Thanks and Good Luck in the future!

Hey Dave,
If you send it back to the address on the package through the flat rate envelope just like the one I sent you, it will cost $5. Send it to me and I'll reimburse your $5 and take care of you. ;)
