Hey guys, hoping someone who knows more than me about Paypal transactions could shed some light on an email I just got.
The email title reads: "chargeback case recieved" and the info in the email was as follows:
We were recently notified that one of your buyers filed a chargeback and
asked their card issuer to reverse a payment made to you.
Although a chargeback may appear to be similar to a PayPal claim, it is
actually a process initiated outside of PayPal and controlled by the card
issuer. One of the unique benefits of using PayPal is that we help you
fight unwarranted chargebacks and attempt to recover your funds.
The chargeback states that the buyer's card was used to make a purchase
without their knowledge.
It is up to the card issuer to decide whether or not they believe that the
buyer's chargeback is valid and they are asking for some information about
this transaction from you.
What am I supposed to do? They say that I need to respond within 10 days, but respond in what way? This transaction was for a rearend that I sold to a member on this site a few months ago. It was picked up and that was the end of it I thought. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks,
Andy

it means you need to give that member a call... they are claiming they did not buy something they paid you for

Ok, I found all his contact info. I'll give him a call and see what's going on. This guy was not a regular member of this board, so I'm wondering if someone got their Paypal info hijacked. We'll see I guess.

Be careful with e-mails you get from "paypal" and "ebay". I deliberately put them in quotes because of what I'm about to describe.
At least twice now, I've gotten e-mails from both companies, allegedly claiming I had to login and verify something. Both cases, the e-mails were from actual www.ebay.com (http://www.ebay.com) links or www.paypal.com (http://www.paypal.com) links. When you click the link, everything looked legit... but a careful eye catches the fact that there's no s after http to indicate it's a secure connection.
In other words, they were both fraud e-mails. The idea is, you log in and they get your password, and can do all sorts of not nice things with your accounts.

Always log into "My Ebay" the same email should be there if it's legit.

I logged onto my Paypal account and had the same warning and a freeze on my account. I also found a $1000 negitive balance on my Paypal account!! I called Paypal and spoke to someone about it who was very helpful.
I was told that the buyer had called their credit card company and told them that they did not authorize the charge. Since credit card companies always side with their card holder, they took the funds back from Paypal and are going to investigate. The guy at Paypal told me that either way I will get the money back (seller protection), but they put as hold on my account for some reason.
Funny thing is that I know the buyer was the person who's account sent the funds. I just think someone decided they didn't want to pay the bill and figured this was an easy way out. We'll see how this ends up.

well as long as you wont be out any money in the end its all good I guess, though it would be nice to see someone try a scam like that and screw themselves. I wonder what will happen if they get caught by the card company making a fraudulent claim like that?
good luck on this Andy. hoping you end up not losing anything on this due to unscrupulous people. (did I really just use the word 'unscrupulous'?)

Check out this website and do a little reading:

Chargebacks are never good, personally I would be up the member's ass that made the purchase to get the chargeback lifted. The majority of the time chargebacks are always decided in the buyers favor and the seller usually gets screwed. I was in a similar situation several months ago and lost on that deal even tho I had tracking info and delivery confirmation, emails, basically all the proof anyone would ever need to show that I sold and shipped the item as promised and yet I was still found to be at fault. Good luck w/ it you will need it....

Find every piece of evidence you can get your hands on to prove the transaction was legit. Emails showing communication to his email address, even get phone bills from the times you talked to him showing the calls made and numbers the calls were from and proof of where you shipped the item and that it was signed for.
If it was a legit transaction and you didn't sell to someone who stole his identity, then you need to show that he purchased the item.
Also, if it was months ago, most credit card companies aren't supposed to allow a claim more than 30 days after the billing date. They will make exceptions, but if you can show the transaction occurred with the guys knowledge, then you should have a good case.

I think he should be given the chance to make it right first. If that doesn't work, .........

I agree as long as he's not advertising something right now.

I did a little reasearch and found the the guy's contact info and such. In fact, I still have the voicemail saved that he left me after the Paypal funds were sent. The end result of my investigation is that the member who bought the rearend WAS the authorized user of the Paypal account from which the money was sent. Which means to me that he is pulling a scam on the credit card company and me.
I sent a response to Paypal documenting how the transaction went and all the phone numbers involved. There were really no emails or tracking numbers involved in this sale. He sent me a PM (which I no longer have) and I replied back with my phone number. He then sent the funds and called me to confirm the sale. He left me 2 phone numbers, one of which was the number listed on the Paypal account. He set me up with his cousin, who lives in the area. The cousin came and picked up the part and that was the end of it I thought.
Yesterday, I called the number he gave me that was also listed on the Paypal contact info under the business name. I got a voicemail recording for the business and sure enough, it was the same guy's voice on the recording that I had talked to on the phone about the rearend 2 months ago.
So yes, this is total bull**** and the person who paid me is the person who got the part. Unless this was a business account (which it was) that the buyer was not authorized to use and he was charging parts to his work?
Either way, the Paypal guy assured me that I would be taken care of no matter which way the investigation went. I guess I will see if there is any truth to that.
