I sold my '66 SS hood on ebay and now I'm trying to help the buyer arrange shipping. For some reason shipping costs are crazy! I know most auto sheet metal compainies charge about $120 or so to ship a hood pretty much anywhere in the lower 48 states. So why is it every shipping company I call wants to charge $800 for a 75 lb box?
I tried to get a quote on ups.com but the box is too big (58x56x10) for standard UPS. Their freight company, Overnight Transportation, quoted $800! FedEx Freight quoted $444! The damn hood is only worth $200!
Can anyone suggest a shipping company that has reasonable rates?
If it makes a difference, it's shipping from 25504 to 59715.
Thanks.

Greyhound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I hope you figure this out Herb.
I tried to sell my hood on ebay long ago and ran into the EXACT same thing. I just couldn't find any shipping less than $350.
It's not the weight of course, they go by size and a hood eats up space on the truck.
I got lucky and sold it locally when the auction winner bowed out.
I've heard Greyhound also for big/heavy items but I think even a hood might be too big for them! Good luck!

I checked Greyhound and did a quote. It ended up being $80.50. I informed the buyer so now it's up to him to decide.
If we do go this route, I wonder if the hood will make it to the buyer without damage.

you might want to see if any of your buddies ship freight stuff at where they work if they have a account with a freight company it makes a big difference in how much it cost.

That was one of my first questions, and no, where he works doesn't have a shipping account.

Pack it well, you may want to make wood corner blocks and use an extra layer of carboard on the top. I shipped a carbon fiber BMW hood with them and it made it perfect.
