has anyone ever been able to cram a 8 inch wheel on stock front suspension on a 67 or 68 camaro WITHOUT the tires rubbing?
If anyone can prove it, I may do the same. I have never played around with anything larger than a 7 inch rim on stock suspension.

According to the database, looks like this guy has.
But the backspace is questionable.

I have done a similar thing with my 67 Firebird. the tires will rub a little. It rubs on the inside rear, on the frame. An adjustable steering stop or a built up stationary stop stops the rub.

I'm driving around on 17x8-1/2 with stock arms. Only thing you have to do to prevent rubbing is to do as the above comment says.

Rubbing is racing, right? :fingersx:
Seriously it's not a real issue. I have 17x8 with 5" BS and 245/45s on a '68. The only time it rubs is on the frame at full lock just barely. If it was on the fender where you could damage the tire, or a constant rubbing under load, yes that would be a problem. But on the frame its just going to show rub marks if any and only if you hit the stops which is usually during parking manuvers if at all.

I did it with 5.25" bs. Any more bs and it hit the tie rod.
Rub the frame slightly at full lock.

17 X 8 with 5" backspacing and a 245/45/17 will clear on the front.
As long as the car isn't lowered to much.
My tires will barely rub on the inside against the frame at full lock.
I haven't had any tie-rod end clearance issues.

I had 16x8 on the front of my 69 Firebird with a 255/50/16 that fit with NO rubbing so 17x8 will fit too - I think CarlC has 17x9 or 9.5 on a red 67-8 camaro w/o problems

He still has a decent turning radius and never heard his tires complain on anything except the road under full throttle!

Interesting..
I may give it a whirl. Yes, that is the rub I am talking about.
When it is fully locked, you hit the frame.
Where are these adjustable steering stops available from?
Can anyone post a pic and a link?
I might give a 17 x 8 a whirl after all. Thanks for all the posts on the subject.

FYI, my 17x8s 4.5" bs rub the frame as well. I have not yet but plan to drill and tap the hard steering stop in my GW LCAs and place in like a 1/4"x20 or similar adjustable stop.
Where are these adjustable steering stops available from?On Carl's car they are part of the LCA from Speedtech and are similar to what I described above.

I am planning on using 2 inch hotchkis lowered drop springs...
Should I, or Shouldnt I?
I can handle a small amount of frame rub. But I am so dam picky, id call that rubbing...LOL....:pat: should I grit my teeth and go with
17 x 8 with 245/45/ 17's TT II's...on a 8 inch rim or a 225/45/17 with a 7 inch rim like I did last go around?
Im skeered.. LOL...

the frame rub is not a big deal. do you have drums or discs? the drums will rub more. you don't have to 'stuff' an 8 inch wheel in there in large sizes (17+). it will fit. the best backspace according to dse is 4 7/8 (i'm pretty sure they assume disc brakes which push the wheels out). i run 4 3/4 without issue on discs. the drums rubbed a little, but only made the frame shiny. you shouldn't base backspace on drop, either. no matter what your drop, the suspension travel is the same. it's limited up or down by stops. make sure your wheel fits in within the stops. on a personal note: you might grit your teeth and get TTIIs, but i'll throw up in my mouth a little. TTIIs are the mullets of the 2ks. you will regret it...

Also, Carl used short steering arms.
Here's my old car, 17x8, 5.25" bs. Anymore and tie rod (it's the yellow thing) would of hit the wheel. A little grinding on the tie rod may fix that, not sure if I'd want to do that though.

It will be disc brakes. I want to run a negative offset, 4" backspace, not more than that.
I won't throw up. I can't find anything that look good on a 68 camaro for less than a grand.
$$$$ my friend.

4" backspace wil not work, you'll rub on the fender. Maybe if its with a 7" riim, a 225 tire, suspension set for negative camber gain (and negative static camber) but it will be close.
Hot Wheels from Discount Tire look nice and are less than $1G. At least you don't see those on half the cars at a show.

I have ran 4" backspace before. But like you said, it was a 7 inch rim. I prefer that look actually, so I will probably stick with the ones that I know will work.. .
Show me a pic of those wheels you are talking about.

www.camaros.net has an active thread in their "Wheels and Tires" section so you can see what people have fit to their cars.
