View Full Version : II Much cold start: an update

Recently I put one of Norris' catch cans on the car and went back to the factory PCV. (my car was sucking big quantities of oil out of the crankcase with the racing PCV setup). One lesson (http://www.maxchevy.com/columns/parsons/iii_5-parsons-1.html) there.
I also replaced all my Russell hose with hardline and Earl's hose. Another lesson (http://www.maxchevy.com/columns/parsons/iii_6-parsons-1.html) there.
I also removed the stereo as I'm working on packaging A/C. A third lesson there. :)
Anyway, with those changes, and with no change at all to the EFI tune, the car starts way better. 2 seconds max. It fires with a burst, then quickly drops to a fast idle, then a normal idle as the engine warms up. It's perfect.
Theories:
1. The stereo was causing a big voltage drop, causing the XFI to reset.
2. My plugs were coated in oil, and kept the engine from firing easily.
3. My car likes playing jokes on me.
4. I'm going insane.

Glad to hear you're getting it sorted out.
My only ongoing "problem" is that sometimes the RPMs drop too low. For example, if I'm creeping in traffic. I give it gas and the RPM go up and when let off the gas they pendulum low (like 640) and the car stalls. It's not all the time but enough to be annoying when it does happen.
And yes, our cars love to play jokes on us. lol
I was thinking of AC, but I just can't get myself to clutter up my engine bay.
Oh yea John... where are the damn pictures!

Ha! I think it is 3 + 4!
My engine recently starting missing on light acceleration, I was ready to blame it on something associated with the XFI. Long story short... one bad plug wire.
I now developed a crackle in my left rear speaker last evening... I'm still trying to blame it on the XFI :hammer:

Good article John.
We ( Days Chevrolet ) have been selling a fixed orifice type PCV
"Valve " ( Its really more like a fitting )to help cut down on the oil consumption of the factory LS Engines .
GM Part # 12572717
Like I said , it's more of a fixed orifice fitting instead of a valve.
It has a very small ( approximately 1/16th inch ) metered hole in it.

I tried the fixed orifice on my genI, made no difference(?)
John, are you catching much oil in the catch can? I have one coming :)

Anyone know the correct way to use a pcv and catch can on a boosted engine?

Yeah , It doesn't always work.

Rick,
I get a splash of oil in the catch can. A drop or so per trip. At this rate, I may never have to drain it!

Hmm. I thought you'd catch more based on your earlier problem. Guess the OEM pcv helped alot!

Yeah there's a real difference in how much air/oil can flow through them based on my "suck the pcv test" (I can't recommend anyone try that at home).
The cool part about all of this is it is that I have filtered air flowing through the crankcase now. Just like factory. :)

John,
I really like the bulkhead going from the hardline to the softline going to the fuel rail. Is that your piece or is that a purchased part? That is an elegant solution for that interface.
Thanks,

Shaun,
John made it out of 2x2x1/8 aluminum angle.

Vic is right. (He had asked me about it earlier). I made it with a bandsaw and belt sander. I usually send my aluminum parts out for anodizing, but I was too impatient to wait for it this time. It's bolted to the firewall with 3 1/4" bolts and nut-serts.

It was the oil on the spark plugs. My bike runs slightly rich and by the time the plugs need changing it requires some throttle on initial start up. With new clean plugs, the bike fires of instantly and idles perfect from the start.
Glad to hear the car is running even better, John. As always, the work looks great. I like the hard lining much better,
