My first car when Iw as 15 was a 1968 Cougar XR7. If all the cars I have owned wince then, that is the one I miss most of all. Now I am getting to a place financially where I may be able to build a ride again, and i am torn between what toget. Does anyone have any pics of a 1967/1968 Cougar that have fixed up? Ido have plans with what I want to do, but is it even logical to build one of these? The goal is very simple:
injected 5.0 with a turbo
WC T5 tranny
9" rear
The rest Iwill figure out as I go.

Anyone have pics of a pro-touring cougar?

Thanks guys
Dima

I have a 67 Cougar that is in need of a lot. I plan on restoring/modding it sometime in the future with my daughter. I personally like the look of the trans am versions from the late 60s. That would be my goal (with a more modern kick to it).
Here is a link to some renderings that are done very nicely.

Thanks. That is what I am talking about. I am just getting into the Police Department ou there, so after I get out of the academy, I will be buying a 68 and building the pro-touring car I can see in my mind.

One nice thing about them, is that they share the same chassis with the mustangs, so parts are available. Generally, they are cheaper to buy as well.

There are several places that specialize in the Coog's, check out this forum. When looking for some hard to find parts and great tech advice, that place really helped me out..

I LIKE a lot!!!! There is just something about a cougar that kicks some serious booty!!!!

Everyone builds the chevy's, but the Fords are much more uncommon.

I have always been a fan of the cougar. I always felt it was a better looking coupe than the first gen mustangs

I started a 67 for a customer but we haved stopped on it for a while.(he's out of money) It should be really cool when we finish it. 4.6 Alum mod motor, mini tubs etc...There was a pretty cool one in PHR a few months ago.

So they are out there, just a matter of finding the right one to build.

Here's a shot my 68, starting to get a bit of the P-T treatment. Already has EFI and 18" wheels, getting a T5, Ford GT brakes, and a bit healther 302.

I like that ride a lot. The only thing I would do is drop it about 1-2" and then flare the fenders on it a bit using some glass.

Instead of a healthier 302, why not just get a 5.0 out of a late 80's/early 90's stang? Throw it on an engine stand, and build it up for some serious balls.

That's an option too, but I scored a very freshly rebuilt 1968 302 shortblock for $250. :) Also got a great deal through one of the wholesalers on a pair of Edelbrock heads, and a Comp Thumpr cam. Most of 5.0L Mustang engines you find these days need a rebuild anyway. I know how I used to thrash on my 87. LOL

The car is already down several inches from stock height, clearance on the exhaust and other underbody stuff would start being an issue if it went much lower.

I am building a 67 for a friend, it is a solid So-Cal car, belonged to his grandpa. I was never a fan of the Cougar, but after looking this one over and taking it apart, it has some very cool lines to it. It will be mostly original, but I have him talked into a few mod's, should take on the sleeper look, just real clean top to bottom.

Make sure to post pics (Even if it is stockish looking).

Does anyone know if the Mustang suspension parts are interchangeable with the Cougar parts?

Thanks

Hopefully. Right now I am just getting ideas, and pictures to go off of. I am getting into the police academy, so once I get out, then I will build it. Gotta get the ideas into my head, and start collecting parts.

Front suspension is identical. Rear springs are longer, shackles and mounting to the axle is different too. Longer wheelbase too, for that comfortable Mercury ride.

If you haven't checked it out yet, go over to www.mercurycougar.net (http://www.mercurycougar.net) and use the search there. You will find lots of info about swapping with Moostang parts. :)

Thanks Ed, I already registered over there. I figured they were the same, just wanted to be 100% positive.

Fast Ed, now I miss my '68 XR7. It was green with black vinyl top just like yours.

i have a 69 cougar that will be getting a bunch of P-T mods. such as bigger brakes and rear discs, TCP G-Bar rear suspension, still undecided on front suspension yet but it will be some sort of coilover type setup, it will get overdrive but the old school version...Hone O Drive baby...yeah!!!!. engine will eventually be a long rod 351w with aluminum heads and full roller valvetrain. compression should be right around 10.25:1 and i'd like to make it a dual fuel vehicle using E-85 and propane but not sure how that will play out yet.

interior will get updated with 86 mustang GT buckets (gonna lose the halo headrests though) and they'll get covered in black/blue houndstooth and black leather upholstery, i'm going to build custom door panels for it by combining 69 mustang deluxe molded door panels and 69 cougar Decor panels and all the woodgrain stuff will get replaced with real walnut veneer. i also have a very rare mid 70's cougar XR7 3 spoke leather wrapped sport steering wheel for it as well, it's the exact same wheel that was used in the mustang II cobra II but with an XR7 horn button, i've never seen another one in person before, only pictures. it will also get power windows, power locks and power trunk release, stock floor console and an overhead console from a 68 mustang and the factory XR7 gauge cluster will get modified stock gauges that will be more accurate

exterior of the car will be basically stock with only an eliminator hood scoop and front spoiler added and probably some 68 cougar XR7-G side mirrors, but i have been thinking about cutting the fender lips and pulling them out about 1" for some mini flares too though, oh and i'm seriously thinking about adding an original luggage rack too....LOL. i'm trying to make my version of what the 69 cougar GT (that never made production) should have been by combining what we know the car would have with what my 69 mustang GT came with. i'll probably do some kind eliminator style side stripe but slightly modified and with XR7-GT lettering instead of eliminator lettering.

now for the part that is less than P-T...it will be running 15" wheels. i have a set of old Riken mesh wheels in 15x7 and 15x8 with 235/60-15 and 295/50-15 tires and i'm also going to get a set of 15x7 stock style GT wheels (same as what 69 mustang GT, Mach1 and cougar eliminator had but bigger) and wrap those in 215/65-15 or 235/60-15 tires. i'll probably try to find a set of 16x8 wheels with 255/50-15 tires also for the rare track days, we don't have any kind of tracks around here, except for drag racing stuff, so those will be very rare.

once i get the stang sold i'll be able to get started on this one and i'm looking forward to building it but i'm going to miss the stang because it was my first car, and the main reason i'm selling it is to put a down payment on a house, the rest will go to the cougar fund

I love Cougars. Before I purchased my Nova I was considering on buying a 67-68 Cougar.

the bottom 2 cougars are very nice examples of what a P-T cougar can be for sure and both take slightly different approaches. the orange eliminator clone (Copy Cat) is pretty high tech with carbon fiber looking graphics and modernized interior and AOD trans with EFI coming soon if not already installed while the green and silver GT-E/Trans Am clone (G-Force Racing special) is old school in it's approach with weber carbs and a Hone-O-Drive setup with cal-tracs bars and other period style suspension mods
