So i got pulled over by a very nice highway patrolman a few days ago. He pulled me over for not wearing the top seat belt(only had the bottom one on). He turned out to be a real nice guy and very knowledgable. Told me he had a 67 and he had cut out the rear and tubbed it. Normally that would just sound like another gearhead until he told me he was putting 17inch rims with 315 rubber. So asked him if he had heard of the site and he said he had. Now im hoping he sees this so i can see pictures of that car!!!

So, did you get a ticket or did he let you off with a warning?

I'm guessing since he said "nice highway patrol man" instead of "F###ing b###ard A##hole Piece of S### cop" he got off with a warning

Oh ya i got a warning. He tried to trick me too. Before he took me seriously on my love for muscle cars he said he had a camaro as well but it was much older then mine. For about 15 seconds i was confused until i said "so its a 67" and he smiled and probably realized i wasnt just another 19 year old kid with a nice muscle car who doesnt know anything about what hes driving!!! It would have sucked to get a seatbelt ticket but i was aware of the law and had no good excuse(i even said that)...

Ironically i showed him under the hood and he pointed out all the illeagal things i had (performer RPM intake, etc...). Taught me a little about the smog exempt laws, such as if i got a ticket for the intake i would no longer be exempt from the bi-annual smog law(wow i would be screwed)! So i really got off even luckier seeing as i drove the car home and dont have to smog it every two years!!!

What? you car is completly smog exempt.. there is no bi-annual inspection on cars older than 1976.. they are smog exempt and do not have to comply to having unmodified equipment.. well for the most part (ie. gross polluters)..

Here is the legislation that makes 1976 and older exempt:
http://www.enjoythedrive.com/content/?id=33338

From the DMV website:
How old does a vehicle have to be to qualify for a smog exemption?

Vehicles with a year model 30 years old or older are exempt from the smog certification requirements.

Example: The calendar year is 2004- 29 = 1975 exempt year model

The current calendar year minus 29 equals the year model exempt from smog certification.

Vehicles exempt from smog certification are listed above.

Note: Starting April 1, 2005, the smog exemption for vehicles 30 model years old or older will end. After that date all 1975 and older vehicles will be exempt from smog certification requirements.

The only part I need to pass smog was having an exhaust system that ran over the rear axle. After you pass you can hack it off.

I never wear my shoulder belt in the city, however on the highway my parents want me to wear it. Understandably though.

We may not have to run our cars through the smog inspection, but it is still illegal to not be smog legal. You are legally obligated to keep the car smog legal even though they don't test it.

How to get caught? Show a cop under your hood for one! Also get picked by one of those roadside sniffers and be sent a request to come in and be tested. They quit testing us but never gave us the right to build the cars without proper smog equipment.

I was under the impression that any car can only be held to the rules of the year in which it was made. Example, a '64 Chevy 1/2 ton has to have a pcv valve, and you're legal.

No?

First what Steve wrote is what i have been led to believe since the dawn of time.

Second Jody you are more then right. When he started pointing out things i started thinkin 'man what the hell did i just get myself into', but before i even opened the hood i could somewhat assume he was a nice guy and not out to get me. I almost think he pulled me over to get a better look at the car!!!!

Matt u beat me to the response there....thats another thing he pointed out, only one of my valve covers is routed back to the carb the other is just a breather which i didnt even know was illeagal!!! And i already hate the way that one hose cakes my intake with oil!

Ok, here are the rules. You are not required to get a biennial smog check, but are legally supposed to keep all the smog components on the car, and in proper working order. That means A.I.R. pump, PCV, Catalytic Converter, and EGR Valve, if so equipped. 1965 and older vehicles only came with a PCV valve, and they were never tested in the first place.

The way you have your engine, there is one line that goes from the PCV on the valve cover, to a port at the base of the carb. The breather, well, that's a technicality. That line is still a breather, but it usually is routed to the air cleaner instead of the atmosphere.

Just because you are exempt doesn't mean you are able to take it all off. In reality, it only takes about 5 horsepower to run the A.I.R pump, and everything else really doesn't do anything to rob any power at all. While it may look cooler at shows, it's not worth the fines to me.

Steve, your car is illegal too. Hee hee..... It will pass the sniffer, but not the visual. What car did you get the motor out of? That's how it would be smogged if an a-hole cop nailed you. :fart:

don't mind Allen, he's just upset from the last time he got pulled over and busted for no air pump, luckily they later found it after the cavity search. :fart:
Yes if it was requried, you have to have it.There are ways to get around it since there where so many applications for a single car.
The thing that botheres me it the usage of late model modern engines like the LS1's and 4.6L Ford. If you get caught running one you will have to have all the equiptment for the year of the engine , right down to the evap leak monitoring equiptment. After you get caught you will be required to get inspected as a gross polluter, thats a bad thing. I had a discussion with one of the CARB guys and they aren't looking for them but know they exsist. Also the removale of the vin and id number from a non stock engine is also illegal. Bummer and becareful around roadside emission testers.
Check with SEMA and you can write the capital about getting tail pipe only testing for 30 year old cars. Its not dead yet.

You guy's are so screwed out there. We do not even have to get saftey inspections here, or smog, even for late models. What is the deal with the shoulder harness? what if it did not come with one, like a convertible?

colt zantop
02-12-2005, 04:29 AM
yeah.I have no shoulder harness becuase my camaro didnt come with one? what about that? dont you only have to have what was provided that year? or do I need to install a shoulder harness??? I got the lap belt but no shoulder !

Damn, and to think I complain about having to buy a tag.
I knew there was a reason I loved this land of rednecks in Tennessee.
What would the sniffers think if you run your car on moonshine?
I guess you have to wear shoes and everything out there :lmao:

Seriously, I am glad that we are so behind the times here. I hope I outgrow this car thing before they pull that crap here.

laws are so lax for the most part in GA you can have anyting done you want. the biggest draw back is for OBD1 cars they have to pass a sniffer if your in the ATL area. they have to be careful, but even then you can do a lot if you plan accordingly. for OBD2 cars just dont throw any codes. so you can live in Atlanta and have a 427 Ls under the hood. they plug into the ALDL and if your not throwing any codes you pass. older cars are completely exempt. im not possitive on the cutoff but i want to say 1986 for some reason. and again this is only for counties in and around Atlanta. so if you live out in the hills like me, you have nothing to worry about.

i feel sorry for anyone that loves cars and lives in california, i would never put up with the laws out there.

I've been lucky, actually. I got pulled over twice for expired tags, and that was totally my fault. The cops were cool though and just gave me a warning. Even with a ton of body damage, they liked the car. Add to that the 7 times for no front plate, and that's a lot of warnings. One thing you do learn though is not to get out of the car, just talk, and NEVER open the hood. Resist the temptation if the officer asks.

Hmm..... Damn I sound like an old fogey. Bill, are you rubbing off on me?

No son, you are just finally growing up :slap:
BTW If you drive that car one more time without a tag, you will be grounded :spank2:

I'm behind the graveyard on Woodside Road. It's entertaining to see the cops running their speed trap. Constantly going around the block to nail someone else. And my neighborhood knows my car. That's a good thing. I think...... Oh, and if you make it to Redood City, I'll be sure to point out everything illegal on your car. Just for kicks..... :fart:
