A thread on here about the FFR GTM kit car ( http://www.factoryfive.com/table/ffrkits/GTM/GTMkit.html ) made me wonder if it would be possible to use a 60's shell as the body for something similar to this.

Has anyone ever done anything like this?

I've seen an a mid-engine Acura Integra before, and someone who had TWO Olds 455 FWD set up in the front and rear of a Chevelle (craziness), but how about putting a V8 into the rear passenger area on a tube frame like the GTM uses.

I'm just daydreaming and curious if this has ever been done.

I remember the Camaro. It was black, in Hot Rod magazine in mid 1999. They made the rear glass, rear quarter and trunk an engine cover that flipped up. If I recall it was also using a buick engine back there.

Crazy bastages.

Of course there is "Hemi Under Glass"

And, the many Corvair V8 conversions

http://www.corvaircorsa.com/norris01.html

I see the Corvair has the same wheelbase as a first-gen Camaro...hmmm.

I saw a magazine from like 1972 where a guy did a C3 Corvette...it was kind of weird.

Bill Porterfield had a company a long time ago called Midengineering. It may still be in busness. He put one in the back of a T-Bucket truck and on in the back of a 78-ish Olds cutlass .It would be about the same job.

Yes, I found his thread here. He is using a Ford GT powertrain. No updates to the thread in a while.

there was also a 69 or 70 mustang done way back in the early 70's with a mid engine 351c and pantera (getrag) transaxle as well IIRC. i remember reading an article about it a long, long time ago on one of the major car mags of the time. the mag was probably from the early-mid 70's though i probably read it in the early 80's. i had a subscription to Hot Rod when i was 8 (1977) and my one of my neighbors gave me a whole bunch of back issues of all kinds of car mags around 80 or 81, so it could have been any of those or even later than that. anyway, the article was comparing 2 mid engine muscle cars one was the 69 or 70 mustang fastback which was converted to a hatchback so the engine could be serviced and the other was a first gen camaro IIRC, though it could have been a firebird and even could have been a 2nd gen car and not a 1st gen. i've always been a mustang/cougar guy since i was a little kid so i don't recall the camaro/firebird thing as well.

I bet that thing is sitting somewhere in a barn somewhere...unless they sold the transaxle to a Pantera owner at some point and junked it. Interesting.

Craig, is VW the one Art told me about with the little "incident" on the top end?

He was a wild man!

We have a local with a SBC mounted mid engine in his corvair. Looks kinda like a Pantera engine placement the way it's mounted. Has a cool looking Lexan cover over the engine since it's inside the car. He does the local shows, I'll try for a pic next time I see him.
Pretty cool build.

I just happen to have a set of drawings and BOM for the Porterfield mid-engine vehicles. Yes, the same one who had his vehicle on the cover of HRM. I bought the set from him in the early 90's and never used them. I guess I might be interested in parting with them. Are people still interested in this design today?
