I'm looking for a rearend builder in the Southeast.
Anybody have any recommendations ?
I don't mind shipping it.
It's a Chevy 12-bolt for 69 Camaro.
I know the procedures and instructions for building a rearend .
I even have the proper tools.
I've done several of them.
But I always feel like I've got something wrong.
I either get gear noise ( on accel or coast or decel ) or side bearing noise when cornering. ( after several hundred miles )
Or I feel the pinion bearing preload is wrong !
I just don't have the total confidence in my skills in this area.
So I want a good professional ( A perfectionist ) to build this one.
I've seen guys who " claim " to be the best ,beating the side bearings onto the carrier with a hammer and steel plate.
And they never check the pinion preload with an inch-pound torque wrench. They just hammer it on with a BIG impact wrench and turn it till it " feels right " .
I want somebody good.

Checkout Chicane67's posts. I think I recall him listing the who's who in building them. Maybe one will be in the Southeast.

Ever heard of "Southern Gear Company"?
The only experience I've had with them is when they told me my 4 speed was toast.
What impressed me about these people was their shop reminded me of my childhood...Going to these garages & shops with my grandfather. The smell of differential & tranny dope. Old worn wooden floors. Boxes full of gears.
Anyway, they've been around a long time. That should count for something.

We have Advanced driveline here in orlando, but surely there is a builder in big ole Atlanta.
I am with you. manual transmission and rears, I just cannot seem to get the hang of it. Like you I never get them quite perfect. Like anything else, just something you need to do lots of to get good. You can read, read, and re read, but it does not subsitute for experiance.

We ( Day's Chevrolet ) buy stuff from and sell stuff to Southern Gear .
They are good folk.
I was kinda' looking for someone who might be more specialized in performance street car setups.
I may send it to them .

When you find out how much it will cost to ship that rear, your local guys are going to get a lot more attractive!
Figure $200 each way to load it on the truck. Add for additional mileage!

Get some practice up and then come help me put a new gear in mine - I'm only a couple hours SE of you and you'd finally get to see my car! ;)

ok !
Hmmm.
Here's a thought,
Maybe I should open a shop that ONLY specializes in rear differential building.
There doesn't seem to be any in my area.
