Base Clear is the only way to go and get this look. The carpet is mercedes and is all hand formed to the car for no seam. IMO its the nicest carpet you can buy and looks the best as you can see.

Killer looking Camaro. I have to ask though, why run a stock subframe that doesn't even appear to be smoothed/worked for such a high caliber build like that?

It is smooth and welded up, that is what the client wanted factory sub frame cleaned up. We build the cars the way the Client wants it and this car is all factory looking and that was the point. As clean and cool as it can be with out cutting and changing to much.

Yeah we are trying to talk the client into building a new set of shorty headers for it so they are tucked up higher. the Client wanted the long tube headers so we will see. these are low but still look good.

Why not smoty this is a daily driven car with great fit and finish and drivability and that is what its all about. I think it has every chance that any of the other cars going.

Why not SMOY? I'm doin it to have some fun. I don't think people want to go there and see the Troy vs Ring Bros show. Even if that is what it is. Having a dozen or so should make it a little more interesting and FUN. Isn't that what this hobby is about? I debated about this for a while, just for that reason, and finally decided, why not? What could it hurt? I think it's gonna be a blast no matter what happens. (I think we all have a pretty good idea of what's going to happen) but it doesn't matter to me. I'm just looking forward to a good time with some good people, is that wrong? I don't think so, and I don't think it's wrong for Fesler either. Their car is awesome and deserves to be there. What is everyone's thoughts on this. Just curious, as I said before, I debated about doing it myself. I'd like to think I made the right decision, as did Fesler.

My lemons fit nice and tight to the body. If he wants to stick with long tubes that is probably his best bet.

What do I think? Take it now! Makes no difference. Whats the other option, wait till next year to finish the car and hope none of the super big players show up? Enjoy the car now. Who knows what will happen? I've never seen a straighter paint job. And the autocross should bring a whole new angle to the scoring.

Yeah, Why Not? That car is badass and has as good a chance as any in SMOTY. Hell, Troy's Nova isn't even done yet and won't have much time at all to work out the bugs. Go out there and take it to em...Plus, the more cars in the show, the better. Good Luck to you.

just saying the smoy usually has a ton of custom work, susp, etc, i like your outlook and think it will be a blast, but you as well as i know what the outcome will be. but heck ya go out there and have fun. btw i am pretty sure you don't enter smoy, you park in the pros pick area and the goodguys team picks them, so even if your not on that list and you show up with something off the charts all you need to be in is the pros pick area and has made 3 autocross runs

So what will the out come be? This car has a ton of custom work and I am sure its one of the best paint jobs attending and again it goes by fit, finish and form. It also goes by do you drive it well yes we drive it everyday so I think we have it all down. There is no saying a stock looking body can not beat another car. I am sure the others have more body work but its more then that.

If you look at the complete build like Interior and paint I am sure we are at the top if not over the top. Our interior is smooth and fits the car perfect and the paint well look at the pictures. We went black to show how much we worked the body not an easy task and if you come look at it I am sure you will see all the work.

And if you dont think this can do it I have the blazer as a back up:twothumbs I know that is custom enough

I think the Blazer is more towards "truck of the year." I've never seen a truck or blazer compete for the award.

I'm hoping that the autocross component will serve as a equalizer. The last five years' winners have all been radical one offs. We're a long way off from Kyle Tucker's Camaro that one the inaugural event. Johnson's 'cuda had a stretched carbon fiber nose and one-off chassis. Reactor, had molded ground effects and 100% one off trim. .....Pigford's Deuce, etc. Recent winners have all been very radical. They've all had channeled bodies. And that's cool--as long as they run as well as they look. I'm sure we'll see some laughable "Driving Miss Daisy" autocross runs.

A one off tube chassis, roof chop and quad turbo powerplant will mean nothing if the car suffers a basic charging system problem or a fragged clutch. We might see some extraordinary cars DQ'd due to very simple mechanical gremlins like a dead battery. Let's hope Goodguys sticks to their guns on the Auto-X rule. It's good for the hobby.

So there's hope for cars that are more realistic, less complicated and sorted out.

That's may be true. I'm just saying a truck has never been in the top five for SMOY.

Truck of the year is just a prestigious.

Might want to enter that too, depending on if you go to the events that qualify the award.

I believe Des Moines is one, it's all on GG's website.

I know you are not trying to cause a problem, that is why we are entering it to change things up a little, it doesn’t say anywhere what kind of a vehicle it can be just what it has to do.

This thing is all Camaro based with a blazer body and can complete with all of these with no problem. I also think that I drive this harder than any of the other cars going. Remember this is my shop truck and we drive it daily.

Oh yeah and the underside is just as nice as the top if not nicer so I think we have a chance out there. I am bringing an extra set of rear tires for it if that tells you anything. I plan on showing what a daily driver is capable of.

It is a beautiful car judging from the pics but going by past SMOY cars i am unsure you will be in there. As a builder you know that these 500k$$$+++ works of art are hard to compete with. Having a car with bolt on components and hanging exhaust aren't going to make it especially on a Camaro. There are a ton of super nice Camaro's. You are building a car with constarints and going againsts cars with open check books and do whatever it takes attitudes.

I have always said it isn't always the winner that gets the attention. Judge the outcome by the crowds reaction to the car. I have seen $15k cars get 10x the attention as the big dollar cars. Drive the car and laugh at the million dollar masterpiece that flops in both the attention and performance category. You built a super nice car and I sam in no way bashing your build, it is just the facts of todays car shows.

Well that is what we want to change, we had enough money in the build to compete but the owner wanted it built a certain way so we did the best we could with what we had to work with. thanks for the words and we will see what happens. This car is up there in price and the fit and finish is perfect so it has a chance remember we are going by what the people like and until they are all sitting together who knows what will happen.

Good luck Chris! That Camaro is sweet! It'll be even sweeter rolling down the road instead of inside an enclosed trailer! Rock chips and bug guts make it more of a car IMO.

How is SMOTY chosen over there? Forgive my ignorance please. I would have thought that it would have a fairly high public vote in it which means that pretty much anything would have a very good chance of winning if it caught the attention of the general public???

I understand how something like the Riddler would be different but to me a SMOTY is something that is more enthusiast driven? Or am I way off the mark?

you can't enter a blazer in smoy, blazer is a truck(truck of the year) same as you cant enter a 40 willys(street rod of yr) etc, on top of that, the only thing you enter is the goodguys show and thats it, if you want a chance to be looked at for an award, on saturday you park in the pros pick area, then i am not sure how many but hand picked builders, etc pick the top 5 or this year will be top 12, goodguys picks the judges, boyd, foose others were used in the past.

Sounds like to me as long as you meet the all of the qualifications you could enter for Street machine and Truck of the year Late. So I guess Fesler with his blazer could win street machine and truck of the year since it does fall into both catagories. Now as to weather they would give two big awards on the same weekend to the same car or truck, who knows. I really doubt it.

Howdy folks. It's that time of year again. Time to zero in on the world's most bitchin' Street Machines as they head to Columbus to compete for this year's crown.

I would like some help in assembling a preview of who plans on coming to Columbus this year. Here is what I'd like you to submit if you would please:
- A jpeg photo or rendering of your Street Machine
- Engine, transmission, chassis, dyno and tire/wheel info (keep it basic and brief)
- Body and paint information
- a List of any awards the car has won

I will compile this and post it to our website ASAP. Please send all information to me at: [email protected]

Here is the criteria for this year's award:
Goodguys/Air Ride Technologies Street Machine of the Year:
Presented at: 11th Goodguys PPG Nationals, July 11-13, Columbus, OH
Who’s Eligible: Street Machines 1954 through 1972 vintage.
How to Enter the Competition: All award candidates must park in the Pro’s Pick Area Friday and Saturday July 11th & 12th as well as participate in a three-lap Street Challenge Auto Cross Friday afternoon, July 11th (Autocross Hours 10am-2pm) at the Ohio Expo Center. Autocross lap times will not determine the overall winner but style points do count!
Criteria: This award is designed for a cutting edge Street Machine which combines masterful build quality with extreme performance. Quality of craftsmanship, body & paint, overall engineering, the three F’s (fit, form & functionality) stance and overall creativity in design and concept is what the selection committee will seek.

Thanks for your time!

I have to agree.....we are bringing two cars that we just finished and I'm sure the customers of both cars would crap their pants if they knew we were going to trash their cars around a track right after they paid their last bill and before they got any seat time. Then on the other hand I would like to see that each car functions to some degree.....

While it would be nice if I was there to assist in the trashing, I would think that if I spent that much on a car, a little "extreme final testing" would be much appreciated. I mean, if something broke, I'm sure all the shops good enough to build a top 12 street machine would stand by their work and fix it.

But hey...what do I know? I'll probably never play the game at this level.

end of the day, I think DRACO has a chance...but I'm rooting for emptynest!

I don't believe the point of the autocross is to "trash out" a car, but rather to qualify it as a Street Machine. If it can't navigate thru a few cones in a parking lot it sure as hell is not street worthy. Are you guys building cars or creating art? The question is not aimed at you Keith, but all those building cars that hope to be SMOY worthy.

Just to clear some things up we build cars to drive and if they look good doing it then we did something right. I dont care to build cars that go on trailers and never drive, I have done it in the past and even own one that I told my self I would never drive. My 67 Chevy truck "Project 67" the red one is 4 years old and has 6 miles. Now the only reason it sits is because as soon as I drive it the value will be half so its a show car only for now.

After that build I stated that I was not interested in building cars to trailer and I still stand by it. I build them to drive them and drive them hard we do. If you cant make the road coarse at Columbus then your car should not be able to enter.

Just to clear up the SMOTY I am entering the blazer and think that it has just as much work if not more than all the other cars coming. It can drive and handle like a vette and is super low. The frame is 100% custom with all Camaro parts and just as clean as the top if not cleaner. It should be a show car but as I said I built that one to tear up, its only metal and we can fix it if we break it. Not a big deal!

I have two sets of rear tires if that tells you guys anything. See you out at the show

I think he meant cars solely designed as show pieces, trailering a car a couple hundred miles is one thing...especially if you are entering that car into a show right when you unload it. In this case I would imagine they put it on a trailer so they would not have to clean it before the show.

I got back from the Des Moines show today. The Camaro and the Blazer are beautiful. I like the fact the the Camaro isn't overdone. It was much nicer than the Blue Camaro that also won a Pro's pick. The Blazer isn't my type of car but it is very nice as well.

If someone was complaining about him trailering the cars, they had a vendor display inside the building. It would be silly to drive the cars seperate from the truck and trailer. Saving the cleaning isn't a bad idea either. It took me forever to clean my Nova.

I don't know if the autocross is the best measure for a street machine but maybe they should make a new class for the post 1950 street rods. Most of the builds that have one over the past few years are more streetrods than street machines. Roy's Nova comes to mind as being more of a streetrod than a street machine.

I'd like to enter mine but I know it couldn't compete since I did it myself and it doesn't have the fit and finish or the $. It is a one off custom car just not on the same level as the top builders. I also did it for about 15 to 25 perecent of the price tag. People still enjoy looking at it, listening to it, and ask tons of questions. I enjoy driving it and wish that they had an autocross at the Des Moines event. I won't make it to the Columbus show anyway.

Good luck with the Camaro and Blazer. They are bout amazing.

Yeah we are going to a show that the cars have to be perfect for so we cleaned them and loaded them on the trailer to drive 2400 miles through two storms not sure if we could have got them cleaned up for the show in time or if the rain would have hurt the blazer.

The camaro is a clients car that he will be the one that gets to drive it and beat it up not me. We built it for him to have fun in not us. The blazer has over 2200 miles on it and we have been driving it for a few months now so I think we drive it enough. I would love to drive it cross country just not in the rain.

I love the blazer.... the only thing that truck is missing to be on my top ten is a set of inner front fender wells. Everything looks great Chris!

i would be pleased if it was a street driving event like , at 5 pm we line up and go 30 miles on a public street . if the car breaks , your out . i dont think a thrash on it event is good for this event .
i still like rolling art . lol

Like the hot rod of the year cruise and stuff, I think Air Ride's idea screwed this up. If they expect like a true autocross lap thats nuts. Plus I have felt it really makes it a "pro touring" event.

GREAT JOB FESLER!!!
WOW!! Paint job is amazing and just pops. Just wondering, about how much does something like this run someone? Just like a ballpark figure. I know it depends on parts/specs. Again, great job.

Not stepping on any toes, but a hop skip and a jump past the century mark.

I just got home from Columbus. I must say that watching those cars go threw the autocross was sweet. That was the best part of the show for me. Some cars did great and others needed a little toning yet but it was something that I will do someday.
