View Full Version : Anyone read this site using a BlackBerry or other cell phone?

Soon I may be switching phones and I might get something with internet access but don't know that I want an I-phone. Most people I know with a BlackBerry love it. My #1 concern is being able to keep in touch with the site when I'm away.
Thoughts?

Larry I view with the blackberry alot. It was a great mini when I was hospitalized for a month. It takes awhile though to get use to the text set up from my past phone but maybe that just me. I like the idea being able to pop up posts "on the go" at any given time.

It can be done. I use a BB and can peruse the forums without too much difficulty. If you want you can try mine next Sunday.
It is not as fast as a PC and cable modem connection, but basic viewing is no problem.
There is one hang-up with the system, and I'll do my best to explain since I'm not into the lingo. With the BB that I have the side wheel is used to move the cursor, and the button just below it backs up to the previous screen. Scroll down to one of the forum topics and select. View the topic. Press the back button to return to the main forum page. It always returns the page and the cursor to the top of the forum. Then you have to scroll all the way again.
I don't know it it is a BB problem or not. I don't delve into it that much.

I've read posts and even posted using my Treo but it's godaweful slow.
Tell you what though. On a road trip last summer in a car full of people the huge joke thread was a big hit!

Pozzi made a request about just that about 2yrs ago. I've tried on my blackberry but it's really tough. It'd be great if we had a dumbed down version for handhelds.

If your using a blackberry pearl, click the ball fast twice, it will hold you where your at viewing so you can continue instead of it bringing you back to the top of a forum page

So, just out of pure curiosity from reading this thread, I decided to grab my Mogul and check it out. Works just fine. I'm actually writing this reply from my phone. If you're still on the fence at RTTH, you can check it out on mine. Windows mobile doesn't render pages as well as the iPhone... but it works.

The cool thing about the iphone though is the ability to use a wireless network not just the cell phone.
I have the ipod touch which is the same as the iphone without the phone part and when connected to a wireless network it works great

I have no issues viewing and/or participating with my Curve... hell, I don't even know why I have a laptop anymore.
Business centric with TOY options = BB
TOY = I-Phone
I don't believe there is an equal to a BB. The I-Phone is a cool TOY... but it doesn't hold a candle to the BB outside of the I-Phone's TOY features. I even have e-Office (http://www.dynoplex.com/eoffice.shtml) which allows me to view, create and edit native Microsoft Office Word and Excel... and view native MS PP, PDF, XLS, DOC, faxes.. images etc etc. I also have three e-mail addresses pushed to my phone... I can send and receive Faxes and access/search any file from a my desktop home PC anywhere. It can even print wirelessly to a blue-tooth printer. You could even set it up with shortcut keys to even do your server maintenance. Oh yeah... its even got a 16G SDHC card... so it holds tons of music as well.
The BB can also be used on a wireless network... and if you check out T-Mobile they have some ability that the other carriers don't even come close to with wireless / cellular switching. For reference, I am with Verizon and have un-limited network/data usage... and it works everywhere I have had a need to use the network. Hell, I even jumped on Lateral-G while at the LSR season opener in El Mirage to ask Jody some questions about an ECM tune... all while standing in the middle of Nowhere-ville Ca. The phone paid for itself that weekend... which BTW... was only $69.
FYI, there are three new BB's to be released in the next couple of months... the "Thunder" which is a full face touch screen (and looks a lot like an I-Phone no less) with all the features of the typical BB, the "Bold" which is the 9000 series flagship... and the "Kickstart" which is a new flip phone that is Pearl'esk.
On the other side... there are two new I-Phones coming out later this year as well. However... they didn't fix the issues with the new models. Nor did they address issues like no MMS, no video recording, no blue-tooth streaming... no copy and paste (which is a must with network usage unless you like to type every input)... and it still didn't get a touch screen sensitivity adjustment.
Best thing... go to the stores and put all your choices in your hands and play around with them. If your with Verizon... you can get any of their offerings and use if for 30 days without risk. You don't like it... take it back and get something else.

Thanks for all the info everyone. It sounds like a BlackBerry may be the way to go for me. Something else I want to do is upload pics to a gallery. Lets say I attend and event and I want to throw semi live pictures in a thread all day. I assume I can do that with the BB? I'm with AT&T and I think I will wait and check out the new Thunder. My goal is to have a new phone before Run Thru The Hills IV

I've always used a Sidekick without any problems. A little slow but it works. I would also like to pick up a new phone. Something more media friendly so I can upload/download pics and video. Sometimes the best parts of these threads are the pics & video. I'm going to have to keep an eye out to see what T-mobile offers in regards to the BB.

Something I look most forward to is near live updates to a thread or gallery while I am at some event. I think that would be cool!

I have plugged my Canon camera into my BB and sent pictures all over the place. Not to mention that with the 16G SDHC card... there is more than enough room to store them on the phone and download them the next time you sync to your computer.
And now... AT&T has unlimited everything service for $99/mo. Not bad...

Agreeable- I send pictures Ive taken and video uplinks with my camera with video, to send too my clients for on going progress on thier construction sites. I also my employees transfer change orders ASAP to where ever I am. (On my boat LOL) BB all the way! But I would wait till the new versions come out. Keep in mind if you dont like it you typically have 30days to try something else. Hell I tried 3 different phones within 30 days, no questions asked by verison. Just told them I dont like it and would like to trying something different.

Another vote for the BB. I got one from work. Acces to my inbox, BB messenger and the web. takes a coupe of days to get used to. make sure you get a model with camera.

Today is the day. My contract is up and I can go get a new phone. Does anyone have the new Iphone 3GS? I like the video option.
I think for remoting into my pc at home, posting on the site including uploading pics and video from event the new Iphone is the way to go. I think posting something like event or autocross footage on the site near live would be cool.

Larry,
I think the intro date for the new 3Gs is this Friday 6-19-09. I ordered some last week, and the confirmation said that they would ship in order to arrive on that date.

Better read the fine print. You are not eligible for the reduced price until your 2 year contract expires. So in two weeks an 8gig 3Gs will cost you $499. Too much for me. I have to wait until October.

I use sprint's instinct. It has Opera mini, and im able to perform mod duties with it. The internet speed is the fastest available too. It has live TV, satilite radio, and gobs of memory (8 gig cards) that you can load content, movies and games on.
However, there's always room for improvement. I'd rather have a "real" querty keyboard. I'd go with a palm PRE or a blackberry if i could change now. Specially considering the new ones they have out.

There are ways around this, I have two att managers that live here. They have amazing flexibility to change the rules. You'd be stunned if you knew the details.

Get the new iPhone and if you are a techie, get the big one. I got one about 6 months ago and I almost can't live without it now!! LOL. Sooooooo many cool things about it and features and apps. The dynolicious is a MUST and espicially for 12 bucks!!! You can also "jailbreak" them to be able to use them much more freely and more like an actual computer. Which I have not done yet.
Heck, my computer has been dead for 3 months now! All iPhone baby! LOL.

Me too: I use the iPhone as my traveling computer when I go out of town. My new favorite app is MLB.com. I can listen to the radio feeds of all the Major League Baseball teams, including my beloved Reds.
I can't wait to see how the faster speed and network work.
So Larry, we need an iPT.com for us iPhone guys!

There is also a Radiolocious app that allows you to listen to any station that has a listen online stream. Really cool since you can search for anything almost!

The I-phone update doesnt take effect until July 1st... so even if you download it now it wont let you physically make phone calls until July 1st.
And FYI... ignore anything talks about "4G"... anywhere, now or in the future. There is nothing special about 4G... and FWIW, GSM is the least secure protocall in the world. Just dont ask me questions about the how or why... you'll just need to trust me on this.

In the course of the last few years, I've had an opportunity to test out quite a few phones on most of the major carriers. I prefer the iPhone myself.
All the other listed phones aren't bad. The only other I would suggest taking a look at, depending on your carrier, is the Palm Pre. It's a nice, gesture based phone, with a fair amount of storage, and a nice set of base features. They have an iphone-like app store, to download additional applications. Time will tell how successful it will be, but I can tell you that this side does render great on it. :)

I'm running the 3.0 firmware now. I can tell you with 100% certainty that at least one version of it does allow calls.

I just assume the NSA is listening to every conversation I have on any phone that I own. I never imagined that I would feel that way living in America. Sad..sad...sad...
When I talk to one of my like minded friends, we always give a shout out to whoever is listening. Encouraging them to study the Constitution and telling them that what they are doing is bad! LOL

I have had BlackBerry for the past four years and right now I have the blackberry bold and it works perfect. I can visit any of the forums I belong to and post, view with no issues any where. I agree with others that the Iphone is a cool toy but for the business world the blackberry is my choice...

I had a Motorola Razer, now have the Motorola Tundra since the Razer broke. I need a tough small phone so have been looking at ways to still view the forum when away on trips.
Google can translate websites so there isn't so much graphics.
Read about it here:http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?p=213286
This would be great even for a Blackberry or Iphone, as it saves time.
For some reason when I search Google Mobile for this site it does not come up.
