Anyone seen this? How in the heck does the bar on the rack that attaches to the stock tie rods keep from moving around? I think I saw something like this on a sand rail and it got me thinking. I have stolen racks off so many cars, but ALL are to wide at the pivot to use on a 2nd gen camaro.http://www.flamingriver.com/index.cfm/page/ptype=product/product_id=372/category_id=188/home_id=63/mode=prod/prd372.htm Hymn

I'm just curious what keeps the part that attaches to the ends of the rack from rotating, Maybe the pivots where the tie rod mount have been removed???

I have nothing against FR but that strikes me as a cheesy way to get around using the wrong rack. The correct solution IMO is a center pivot rack. Unisteer is the only one doing that and I hear they`ll have one out for the 2nd Gens soon. Their steering shaft routing is much nicer too. Mark SC&C

you won't find one.....that is the holy grail for 2nd Gens at present.....although, you HAVE to see the DSE subframe setup, that incorporates an R&P setup into the subframe, there are actually recesses IN the design of the frame to accept the R&P as unobtrusively as possible!!!

Nope, wrong configuration rack. It`s much too wide inner pickup to inner pickup. Thanks for playing we have some lovely parting gifts. :)
Ask yourselves something. Is a rack and pinion the holy grail just for the sake of being a rack and pinion or is the holy grail a steering system that`s the proper rate for your application with outstanding feel and feedback? Nearly ever new car and truck has a R&P. How often you you drive a new vehicle, get out and say "Wow! That steering was great!". Yeah...me either. I`m not saying R&P steering is a bad thing, clearly it can work very well. But conversions to cars not originally fitted with one are far more complex to get factory RIGHT than most folks give them credit for.
In other words a very good steering box (like a blueprinted Lee 670) and sound factory linkage is still better than a even a good R&P conversion and it`s way ahead of a mediocre one. It`s a lot less expensive too. Mark SC&C

I just like seeing a nice "rack" :)
I agree Mark. Of course I'm lucky in that I have a WS6 TA with the nice steering from the factory. Unless I swap out the front subframe(which is likely), I'm not going with an rack and pinion. There are too many alternatives with a simple steering box that work so well. I'm sure more people here are aware of the 3rd gen IROC box swap. If you can find one, that's a good alternative for many people to look into.

To answer the original question I would guess they don't use the inner tie rods and have a solid extension.
It looks kinda cheesy and I don't see the gain.
On another note the 600 series box is marketed as having R&P feel whatever that means.

Maybe I need more education on the subject, but I don't see any real benefit to adding r&p to these cars besides the "cool" factor.
In fact, I understand that they will likely introduce more bump steer.
Seems like a lot of work and expense for marginal (if any) gains.

The 600/670 boxes actually use different internal valving than the older 800 series boxes. Upgrades from a two piece spool valve and stub shaft to a one piece (no added play) and updates in the hydraulic methodology make their valving more like a new GM R&P than the old 800 series boxes. Basically they`re hybrids that use modern valve gear in a traditional box format. Mark SC&C

there are two problems with r&p on older cars and that is too much scrub radius and bumpsteer issues both would need to be addressed to make an r&p work correctly
