Worrisome quote - "One far-out idea, which sources close to the company say has been floated by a New York investment firm, would be to split off the troubled North American business from the profitable overseas units and issue stock in the latter."

Great, in order to survive, GM may have to SPIN OFF THE AMERICAN BUSINESS.

Wonderful.

No, I believe that would be General Motors North America that would get spun off under that plan.

Spun off and perhaps bought by a private equity firm like what happened with Chrysler.

Not the worst thing that could happen. PE firms can and do turnaround companies when there are no shareholders to hold them to quarterly performance.

Chrysler is undergoing a rebuilding from the ground up, and is being managed very much like a startup. As such, much of their debt and legacy issues get restructured.
