View Full Version : 18X9 or 18X10 on a 1st gen with no tubs....

It's real simple....the car is NOT mini-tubbed. On a 1968 Camaro...would you do a 2 piece wheel out back in an 18X9 or take your chances with an 18X10 with a 5.75" backspacing? Tire size would be 275/40 R18.
Thanks for voting.

I always think bigger is better.... but, IMHO 9" wheels would be a better match for the 275 series tire you have chosen. If you go with a 10" wheel, I would try to step up on the tire size. Just my 2 cents tho.

I voted for the 9 not because of fit but cuz I think the 275 tire looks better on a 9 than a 10.
Gonna agree here. If you're set on a 275 section width, go with the 9" wheel.
Plus you know it'll fit with the correct backspace.
I'd go at least a 285 on that 10" will, if not a 295.
I know Drewhelm got a 295 on a 10" wheel to fit a factory tubbed Firebird. Although, it was '69
on the 10 you'd have to NAIL the backspacing.

Can you do 9.5" or are you limited by the wheel manufacturer you have chosen?

I dont agree at all......275/40/18's look best on 10's. You get too much sidewall buldge with the 9's. Here are my 275/40/18's on 18x10's...5.75bs. But its a 69....

This is an 18x9 wheel with a 275/40 on it. Excuse the poor pic.

Go with the 10's Tony, here's a thread where Steve Chryssos got 10's on the back of his '68: https://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10840
I'm running 18x10 with a 5.75" BS and 275 tire. I think it looks great.

Well...Steevo did an 18X10 but he had to roll the wheel lips. My car is already painted, I don't want to take the chance of cracking the paint. I am going to play it safe and go 9" with the 275/40 R18. The wheel in the picture with the green car looks good to me. That was all I was worried about; how it would look. Thanks everyone for your input.

Do these tire/wheel sizes hold true for a 69 Camaro, or is the BS different?

Tony, you should be able to do 9.5's without rolling, but you can also trim the lips with a cutoff wheel. Trust me you'll like the look of the wider wheel much better.

X2....I get asked all the time if its minitubed or not.

I agree with rybar, wider wheel would look much nicer. I Have a 72 camaro, and I had to roll the fender lip and beat the hell out of the seat belt hump, just to fit the 17x11 with 5.75" backspacing. I could of have gone with 9.5 without rolling the fender, but I like the look of the wider wheel more.

Wider wheels do look better normally, but if the wheel is wider than the tire, it looks awkward. If you look at the 2 pics in this thread, you might see the difference. the Camaro has the same tire as the ugly green car(mine), but it has a 10" wheel compare to the 9" wheel on my car. The 10" wheel would look better with a wider tire (IMHO)

Is the 10" rim really wider than the tire though? I just bought a set that I haven't received.
But if you look at the tirerack data for a 275 as follows:
275/40ZR17
Load Index 98 = 1653lbs (750kg) per tire
Speed Rating “Y” = 186mph (300kph) 98Y SL Treadwear: 300
Traction: AA
Temperature: A300 AA A
1653 lbs.
44 psi
10/32"
30 lbs. rim width - 9-11"
9.5"
sect width - 10.9"
NA
25.7"
810
from that the tire is supposedly 10.9" wide and can fith 9"-11" rims so 10" is right in the middle :p

Tony,
I have 17x9's on my 68 with 275/40-17's. The tire doesn't "bulge" out to me. I am very pleased with how they fit on my car. I do however get some rubbing on the inside wheel well when turning into a steep driveway. I have had zero problems rubbing on the outside, running Hotchkis TVS all round. I'll gladly post pics if you're interested.

The 275's look fine on anything from 9"-10" wide. But....if you are after the BEST look......10's all the way.

I personally think the 10" wheel and 275 tire look perfect. I don't think you can get much bigger or better looking for a stock tub 1st gen Camaro:

GeoffP, I am interested in what that looks like.
What back spacing is that your using?
What about your front wheels and tires?
Pics please!

I love the look too...
But Id bet if that car was a 68 youd be rubbing the fender lips/inner fender wells when you drive crossways over a driveway apron ect.

Wow - I didn't realize how long it's been since I got some really GOOD pictures of my car. I haven't gotten anything decent since I installed a ton of parts (Hotchkis TVS and full Wilwood brake setup). I plan to do some work outside tomorrow, so I'll try to get some taken post clean up since it needs washing!

Quick question to everyone here running 275s on a 'stock' body - Did this require shock reloation for anyone, or are they still in the original placement?

275 tires on 18X10 wheels will work on a '69 Camaro with no problem. You have to remember....I have a '68 and it's a whole different ball game. I don't know that I could trim that wheel well and not chip the paint. And even if I could I would probably have to trim past the spot welds seperating the quarter from the outer wheel house. That could get real precarious REAL quick.

Here's 3 I took this afternoon. I got a few others, but thought these were what everyone was looking for (stance and fender clearance).

Pay no attention to the rust! It'll need quarters in a couple years - it's livable for now. :)
My setup is Hotchkis TVS, Wilwood all round (Dynalite on the rear and Dynapro 6 piston on the front). I did not notice any increase in offset going to the Wilwood system on the front even though I had a few suggestions that I would. If anything, I noticed an improvement in clearance on the passenger side where I had a rubbing problem with the 4 wheel drum brake setup. The wheels are 17x8 F and 17x9 rear. They are ROH's Snyper. I think it has been discontinued because I had to go with an 84-86 Corvette offset on the rear due to lack of availability of the correct offset. I used a .9" spacer to make up the difference. It gives me about 3/4" clearance behind the wheel and no clearance issues on the shocks or parking brake cables. The tires are Sumitomo HTZ II's (I think). 245/45-17 and 275/40-17 (F/R).
Hopefully I answered any questions ya'll might have in advance. If not, let me know. I hope this helps!!
EDIT - forgot to mention. The fronts are the correct offset for a 3rd gen (the set actually fits my IROC better than the 68). I bought the wheels from Andris Skulte (www.skulte.com). Went with ROH and Skulte due to price since I wanted 17's and couldn't find anything else I liked cheaper.

Not to hijack your post Tony. If you put a 18x8 rim up front with a 245 tire what clearance problems could you encounter? I can imagine clearance problems with bigger sway bars, after market arms, tie rods. Is it safer to take a smaller tire (235) or will there be no difference?
