I drove and picked up my new console today. It's from a Toyota Matrix. It's perfect because it stops before my shifter, which is a little off center. I cannot tell you how perfect it fit.

The seats are out of a honda prelude, and the door panels have been re-done with some vinyl dye.

Let it not be said that I don't drive my car! Just look at that layer of bugs! LOL!

Today's "playing with the camera" shot.

a shot of the rear seat. It still needs work. I'll have to fab something up to fill in the sides. I cannot decide between building armrests or just shaving some foam and making an extension of the rear seats.

Im leading towards armrests.

You can really see how bad I need new rubber seals and fuzzies in this shot. That's next.

Looks great. Looks like it's supposed to be there.

Im in love with the thing really. It is the perfect solution for those who worry about how to mate a late model console with the dash. Most don't have the skills to pull it off. This gives you everything you want in a console in one tight package. Armrest/bin, e-brake handle, Two front and two rear popout cupholders and a cellphone slot and smaller bin down low in the front. Not bad for 100 bucks from a junkyard.

Here's another look at it.

OMG the bugs. I forgot all about that problem in Sacramento. You are gonna need some elbow grease to get those off...

Man I hated riding to/from anywhere near dusk in Sac on my motorcycle. I'd get plastered

Nice score Tony. Perfect fit. You ain't kidding about the shifter being off center. I'm a big guy and when I shift over and forward into reverse the shifter handle is just about under my kneecap.

Question about you seats and carpet. Where did you get your carpet and is it just extra stock cut and layed in there to fit or formed peice for the corvair from a vendor?

Any issues mounting the prelude seats? Did you make brackets or modify the existing ones?

Thanks

Very nice Tony. I wish I had more storage in my car for driving. I hate having my cell and my wallet in my pocket when I drive, so I dump them on the passenger seat. Works ok except when I have a passenger.

Very nice, Tony.

Why all the bugs? Is there a river system nearby where you get a lot of hatchings?

Are your seats out of a Prelude? Look familiar..

Love the console.. I wonder how that would fit in a Camaro?

Lastly on your "playing with the camera" shot.. next time turn your wheels just a bit to the right ;)

Looks great man. I really dig your Corvair.

PM me your email - I have a cool Corvair photo or two from the Goodguys here in Colorado a couple of weeks ago.

The carpet is a 18 dollar black floor rug from Walmart, cut to fit. It's been spray adhesived down to take the form. Mounting the 02 Prelude seats was insanley easy. all I did was drill holes. No brackets were needed, just bolts and washers.

I thought the same thing after I left Steve. I always forget something.

The console mounts to a flat surface. four screw holes flush with the floor. the Ebrake handle also has a braket that is just basically a flat plate with 4 holes in it. Also made to mount on a flat floor. It's 6 1/4 inches wide, so if your tunnel is as wide or wider, you'd be good to go.

the highway runs alongside the sacramento river basin. AND about 25 miles of wet rice fields. LOL. The bugs are epic. Especially springtime. The yellow butterflies can litterally cake your car to the point you cannot see, and can choke a cars cooling system to the point of failure.

Looking good Tony.

Love the requisite NOS drink bottle. Looking for another free case? Lifetime supply this time?

The seats and console look killer.

What paint type/codes did you use for the body? Looks excellent!

LOL I wish! Actually that's one of the freebie bottles they gave me. I'm only about half way through them all. I still have all the cans and about 10 bottles.

Thanks! the "paint" is just DP90 primer. and the stripe is duplicolor gloss black from a rattle can. It's a driver man. I ain't got time for real paint.

It used to be worse in the early-mid '80s. Right after DDT was outlawed (funny story there, but not for this board) but before they'd found a decent alternative the mayfly hatches were unreal. There were visible clouds of them that you'd see drifting across Hwy-99 and I-5. They were so thick you could hear them smashing against the car.

What was the last thing to go through those bugs minds?

Their butts.

Wit all those bugs, it looks like you have the right car for that region. It's tough to get bugs in a Corvair radiator.
The best thing I added to my '69 Camaro was my custom built (grafted) center console! I used the front of the '69 and the back of an '05 Infiniti. Cupholders and storage... hard to beat, plus you can actually rest your arm comfortably between shifts.

Did you clear the DP90?

TonyL
06-12-2008, 01:32 PM
Nope. it's beginning to show signs of fading. But it has held up very well. It still looks very black.

One day plan to paint it for real.

How long have you had it in DP90 - is it around 2 years now?

Geez Tony, you'll be forever cleaning off all those bugs! Or do you make your neighbor's cat lick them off? The 'Vair is progressing nicely, and you get to drive it at the same time.
You are right, a good console can make driving more enjoyable. The newer consoles are so much more functional than the older ones from the sixties.
Your "whiffle ball" shifter knob looks as cool as the day you got it. Definitely on my wish list.
