A clear powdercoat is best from what I've read.
You can also add transparent dies and get a killer
"candy" over polished aluminum.

Here's a nice forum where you can see photo
examples and read about techniques...

We have one of the old eastwood hot coat setups they 1st sold, and its still coating stuff just fine! We use the eastwood clears over any aluminum that is not anodized. The coating holds up pretty well, we poilshed a pair of aluminum finned valve covers and powder coated them a cpl years back for my bro. He is kind of anal so his engine bay is spottless, he waxes the valve covers periodicly and they still look like when we coated them.

A word of warning though if doing it at home. Get the part polished like you want it and then polish it some more! The coating seems to always bring the shine down a notch, and if you get to much powder coating on there it can sometimes look milky and not as clear.
