I recently renamed this project from "Buck Shot" To "Bodacious" that mean PBR bull that had the tendency of rearranging faces.
I haven't really started a project thread on my Camaro in here and thought I was getting to the point that I should. I have spent this weekend mocking up and tacking my rear suspention in place. My goal is to get this car a roller before my wheels show up. They are due next Friday. The wait is killing me. But it isn't like I have nothing to do till they get here.

Ok, here are some pics. I did my own disk brake conversion, still need to finish the rears. Fabbed the mini-tubs, and crossmember for T-56 trans. And pics of my tires waiting on rims. Should be here tomorrow.

The rears are 335/30ZR18 and the fronts are 245/40ZR18 All of them are Michelin Pilot Sport 2's

Looks like your helper is glad they came it too. It must be a nice relief . They look great.

I have spent the last 8 mos making as smooth of a buck that I can, and fiberglassed it tonight to make my mold for my own unique hood. I am calling it "SB/L-89" it is like a L-88 but a more modern day look. The SB is my initials. So far it is all home made. I originally drew it up with vents on both sides. I am not sure if I will do them but I am open for suggestions. It should be done in about two more weeks or so. I am thinking on doing another version of this at 3" tall. I think this is a bit tall (5") for what I want as a final hood. Plus in Utah. It wouldn't be legal. Our limit here is 4". I found that out after I was pretty deep into making the buck.

Although, I have a cowl hood for my car. The cowl is my favorite hood for 1st gens. I feel the cowl is so overplayed. That is what made me want to do something different. I always loved a L-88, but didn't like what was avaliable.

Paint? Ask me everyday... and I will probably tell you a different color:hand: . I think it will only get locked down the day I go pick up the paint. I always bounce back between some deep blue to brandywine. Here is a pic that I photoshopped. I also put my wheels and brakes into this pic. LOL.

any chance that you weighed the wheels before you mounted tires?

11-03-2008, 07:59 AM
Sam anything new??Not much new. Been busy with kids and sports lately. It is getting cooler, I think the soccer and b-ball is going to mellow out. I am planning on getting back at it here this week. The mold for the hood it ready to go. I just have to get out there and do it. And, thanks for thinkin' of me

any chance that you weighed the wheels before you mounted tires? I didn't get a chance to weigh it before mounting. I can easily weigh the whole tire and rim if you want. I think someone on here would be able to tell you the weight of the tire, then we can just subtract.

Did some work on the hood mold tonight. I put another coat of paint on the mold. My goal is to lay the glass for my hood this weekend. We will see if I can break away enough to do it. I still need to do a wet sand on this before this weekend.

Wow looks like you did a lot of work to it to get it straightThanks Wayne, I really think it is going well. Considering the only automotive field I am in is I program machines that make and test the safety airbags in the cars. The only bodywork experience I have has basically been on my car. I am your typical married with kids guy that loves cars. I really wanted something different for the hood so I figured why not. It is a lot of work, but I like it so far. Plus if it doesn't come out ok. I always have my cowl hood still.

2 thumbs up on the hood! Looks really good. What kind of clearance did you end up with between your tires, tubbs and outer housing lip?

1968CamaroSS_Sam
05-20-2009, 06:35 PM
I will remeasure the clearance and let you know. I can't remember the exact numbers. I could have probably got it to fit a bit better, but I figure it is pretty good for a home job.

damn Sam you got a great project going there. Looks like its about ready for paint. That seems like it is one of the hardest choices to make. I told the painter I wanted my car sunset orange and ended up with two paint jobs and alittle orange! Did tell him to do what he wanted that I trusted him! Keep up the great work and really digging the custom hood.

I have one of those Eastwood fender rollers. I did a mild roll on mine. Still don't know if I am going to run the wheelwell trim so I didn't want to do a full roll on it.

After a year and half of self taught/learning how to do fiberglass. I finally got the guts up last weekend to mold my hood. I was worried it wouldn't release after. I am still learning, but I am 90% sure I will have a decent hood now that I got it out of the mold. I feel it is turning out great so far. There is nothing I am concerned about with it now. Everything is easily fixable. LOL.
I ran out of resin, so this is only one layer of glass. After I get more resin, I will lay one more underneath and mold a support structure underneath.
Righ now the hood is just sitting in the open engine bay. I guess I was crazy to teach myself how to do my first fiberglass project by doing a hood... I should have practiced with something easier first. LOL.

It is amazing how fast a thread gets burried on this site. Seems there are always things going on with so many cars. It is so cool to watch, and get motivated by them all. I guess I will have to keep busy and update often. Here is what I did over the weekend. Stripped the donor car of all electrical and I am going to try to integrate as much as possible into my project.
Time to start sorting through all of the wiring. This is just the body harness and the one under the hood...not including the one on the engine for the ecu.

Ok guys, I am ordering everything to finish up the bell housing area. Might get rear gears in a week or two. I really need help here. I am from the old school days where my M21 wide ratio and 3.73 were ok. I always felt that I was starting in second gear. Freeway totally sucked.
So, I need to hear from you M6 guys, what are you happy with? What are you running? Do you stock ratio guys ever hit 6th gear? I am planning on eventually hitting 700 fwhp and I am more quarter mile oriented, although I would like to do some solo/slolom and open track days at a local road course track. Help me pick a decent all around ratio. Does anyone launch in second at the strip? I hit the ratio calcs online and I am leaning 4.56 and possibly 4.88 anyone here play with those ratio's?

This is not a high dollar build, just my dollar build. When you figure I am way under 20K on this car so far. It isn't too bad for the money. Here is my latest progress of my do it myself.
I don't always like to advertise. So, I milled off the Summit off the rear diff cover and the plan is to sand blast it like people do with windows. But, for me. I am planning on painting the area, and stenciling Bodacious on it (Finally my wife's cricket will be handy). Then sand blast the area, when I pull the stencilled letters off, the painted lettering will show. That is the plan anyway.

Also Started on my motor mounts. I am about 1/2 the way there on it.

Don't worry. I didn't use the motor mount to drill the holes. I was double checking the numbers I got off the internet was right. I had that digital readout thingy to tell me where to move the bit. I am self taught on the mill...so I don't know the right names of things.

Painted and put my front subframe together, stll need to get swaybar and coilovers for the front. Smoothed drivers side firewall, need to put hole in for steering column. Still have more boxing in to finish smoothing it. Also, started to flush the front windshield. It is good to have a few days off for a change.

I picked up a set of headlight motors off of a Fiero awhile ago at a pick a part. Finally, got around to making the brackets and modifications to my doors to run them. Total investment about $40.00. Chalk another item off of my to do list.

Been gone form this site for a long time. Finally getting back into working on my car again. It is nice to be back. Last weekend I tigged my lower front fender extensions to the fender. I have always not cared much for that parting line there. So, I had always planned on getting rid of it. I am glad I did it. I like the looks much better now. Keep in mind I am not a pro I am doing this at home. Kind of learning as I go.

Been spending the last week working on my fuel tank. Stainless is way easier to tig than Aluminum...but, way harder to work. I am enjoying learning how to tig it. Had to incorporate some serious Jap Engineering (I am Japanese and a Engineer) to get the job going. Like so many others on here. I am a poor dad, gotta make due with what I have. I guess I should rename my project Poor Touring LOL.

Two opposite end of the spectrum comparisons-

When I drove my Nova on the street I had 4.56 gears behind a TH350. I ran a 28.5" tall slick at the track and went through the lights at 6200 rpms @ 110 mph. The car redlined at 6500 so that was just about right. It ran about 3200 at 60 on the highway with the 1:1 final trans gear.

My wagon runs a 25.5" tire and 2.41 gears behind a TH350. It runs through the 1/4 mile lights at 4500 in 2nd gear at 97 mph. It does about 2200 @ 65 with a 1:1 final. Redline is 4500 with this motor. I can run most autoX courses in 1st gear which gives a nice torque advantage.

Here's a great website to play with numbers... www.wallaceracing.com/gear-speed.php

Spent some time fitting my tank. I want to mount it without using those straps. I think it would look better without the straps. I will use the mounting bolts from the stock tank and I figured out how to blind mount the tank. Also, had to figure out where to put the fuel inlet tube. I think this tank will get me going down the road, but I want to build a wider and shallower. I feel it hangs down a little more than I like. This is just a visual judgement. I still have plenty clearance below the tank.

Update on my Camaro. Finished tank, mounted it, plumbed everything. Tonight wire it up, and fire up the engine. Before I had the fuel pump in a 5gal bucket with the gas in it (Yeah very safe....) just to fire it up. Now, I have the fuel system where it should be.

A few more things like buttoning up the brakes, rear gear install and install pan-hard bar. Then I can take the maiden voyage around the block. Sitting on a crate of course.

Thanks Ben, The handles are from mid 2000's GM like Pontiac Grand Prix, Bonneville, Malibu. etc... I think the C5 Corvettes used the same handles, I would be using the keyless ones. There are no key holes in my car anymore other than the ignition and that might even be going to a push button start.

It has been awhile since I updated this build. I have recently built some mirrors for my car. I had wired it for electric mirrors so, I wanted these to be electric. I got mirrors at a pic a part off of an mid 2000's Buick. They were window mounted, and I needed door mounted. So, I fabbed up a door mount. I will have to get pics here of the finished and painted mirrors later. I don't have any pics here of them done.
