Just found out that my wiring is beyond repair and need to buy a new harness for my 68 camaro. I am pretty sure I can't do it myself. What is it going to cost me an labor? keep in mind the car is fully assembled. I am in the middle of a move as well and will be relocated to Houston in 2 weeks. Any good, reasonable shops there?

I wouldn't be so sure you can't do it yourself, if you use one of the aftermarket harnesses like those from American Autowire. Unlike OEM harnesses, the wires on the AAW kits are imprinted to what they connect to. Unlike OEM harnesses, you not wading through color code charts trying to figure out which green wire goes to what when there are multiple green wires to choose from.

My shop quoted me ~$800 to wire the whole car, which is about 2 days labor for them, but only with a kit like the AAW one. However, that is with a car that is being assembled and is thus easier. If I wanted to use OEM harnesses, the wiring would be a lot more labor $.

If you don't care about originality, regardless of who does the work, I recommend a kit like the AAW one, which run about $500. OEM harnesses are more expensive, less comprehensive, and much more labor intensive to install.

To keep my costs down, I'm planning on doing my own wiring using an AAW kit, and I'm not nervous at all about doing so, after I looked at one of the kits. Who knows though. Maybe I'll screw it up and eat my words.

the problem is.. that is avery important part my man..

so..

if you decided to rewire.. thats fine.. but if you mess up something you could burn your nice finished project to the ground..

I personally want an expert on that one myself.. after seeing a friend rewire his and the car looked like bombed out bagdad.

I usually quote about 40 hours (more for efi & etc) to rewire a car like yours. Maybe that will help you with your search.

It really depends on how trick you want it and the attention to detail. It's all the cutting wires to lenght and custom routing that takes the time. It's got to look good and be reliable. Especially when you are running custom headers, smoothed firewall, blah, blah I can promise you it can't be done right in 2 days. I'll have 40-50 hours in mine minimum.
If you are concerned about burning you car to the ground, probably not a wise choice to do it yourself. Every circuit should be protected by a fuse, fusible link, or circuit breaker. You really need to be able to read wiring diagrams fairly well. The instructions are good but it'smuch easier to wire it by diagram. The american autowire update kit is really nice.

Do you need to rewire the whole car from headlights to taillights, including the engine, or just a portion of it? What happened to make you realize the entire care needs rewiring?

id say if you worry about it.. do the whole thing.. especially something like that..

if you do a portion.. the rest is a variable.. kinda like a haircut.. you can cut a portion.. results will vary..

hhaha!

the potential fire hazard, as I was told by a friend of a friend that works at an electrical shop, is under the dash. He said I need a new harness. So as far as I know the wiring for taillights and head lights are ok. things under the dash and in the engine compartment had been cut and splice one to many times by previous owners and stereo shops. From what I have read the AAW kit seems to be the best way to go. I just don't feel comfortable doing it myself. On the other hand i can't afford to spend another 1 or 2 thousand dollars in labor to have it installed.

Check out www.wiringharness.com

They sell a full kit that you should be able to do at home because it is pretty much a plug and play installation.

Camaro Concepts in Houston should be able to tackle with no problem but don't know how they compare on cost for what you are used to.

What part of Houston are you coming to? I am near Houston. I have a 68 with no wiring and plan on going with the AAW kit. It is really not that hard esp if it is has a carb. PM me with details and who knows you might be just down the street.

I am in the Houston area as well and I am installing a classic update kit. It is pretty easy as long as you are patient.

It is easy! I did one back in the late 1980's, that was before they had these easy kits. I bought an oem harness and street rod fuse box. I also bought the wiring manuals.

the cost of the wiring is mostly the removal of interference. i'm not sure why so many 'gloom and doom' references to cars burning to the ground are mentioned here. with proper fuses and links, you should be safe. you can do it yourself; it is a pain in the @$$, and you will pay good money to have someone else do it.

Yep... nothing hard about it really... all you need is time and patience.
