Amen. Haven't seen a national news story on it all day. Makes me crazy, like people forgot. Trully a day that changed the world.

BTW I saw the other day there is only 1 living American WWI veteran. Very sad.

I agree. I called two of my uncles today (both were in WWII), as I do every year, just to say thanks. One flew a recon plane, catapulted off a destroyer. This was a lightweight, unarmed plane that they flew around looking for the enemy fleet. When they came back, they had to land in the water close to the ship and get picked up by a crane. He was twice decorated...Navy Cross, etc. The other was also Navy, but seconded to the OSS. He was parachuted into France about a week before D-day to make contact with a resistance unit. To hear him tell it, they blew up all kinds of stuff (train switches, telephone circuits, etc.) well ahead of the invasion. These are regular guys, who I grew up with.....telling us kids goofy stories, playing baseball with us, helping us work on our first cars. It means a lot to me to have heard their stories firsthand. I'll sure miss them when they're gone.

In 2003, I went to the D-day celebrations in Normandy, France. What an experience! The Brits and French are really into it....lots of restored trucks, tanks, half-tracks, jeeps....you name it. Everybody in period dress or uniforms. As visiting Americans we were treated with the utmost respect and friendship. It was truly remarkable. Anyway, god bless all who fought there or whose family paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Thanks, I'll see my Dad this weekend. He can't remember what he did this morning but he can remember things from the war like it was yesterday.

My father is also WWII. He had the displeasure of taking a foot tour of the America's European Theater of events. He landed at North Africa, Sicily, Anzio, Southern France, etc., every major landing the 3rd ID made during the war. Oh, and that fun little jaunt on Chrismas Eve, 1944.

I'm in awe of what they gave up for the country that we live in today. To this day my father still has horrible nightmares about it, and I feel guilty about not being able to help him.

Its unfortunate how so many take the sacrifices made by all the soldiers for granted. I, for one , am very thankful that they made the choices they did so that I can live my life the way I chose.
