I just noticed your turn signal lever is on the right. Is this how you intend to run it or is it just mocked upside down?

Thanks for the comments guys! It is great to have progress again!!! :jump:

Hey Phillip,
Yes, you are seeing the steering column correctly! We installed the unit in its normal arrangement and even in the highest tilt position I was concerned over time I would eventually hang up on the aluminum blinker arm climbing over the rollcage and snap it off! We decided to install the unit upside down and keep it on the inside. There is enough "tilt" in the column to serve its purpose in either the up-most and down-most positions (especially since we actually have the column installed almost horizontal with the use of the "steer-clear" device). It is a little different when you hit the "tilt" lever... It wants to jump down instead of up! You have to actually push it "up" into its lowest position which is now the highest position!! :hammer:
I was wondering when someone was going to catch that! :)

I don't believe what I see! I was getting worried about this project and I would check back regularly to see if anything was happening. I will have to check in more frequently for updates. I'm really liking the way that dash is coming together.
My bug is still on hold but I'm collecting parts. We did manage to get my son's truck built and made it to the Lonestar Round up. Trying not to let the grass grow under my feet! As always, I'm available for heavy lifting or garage sweeping if you need it.

Hey Paul,
Good to hear from you! That's great that you finished your son's project. I know firsthand what it's like to have life take priority over our projects... I know you will keep plugging away and get your Bug done one day soon!
Hopefully, I will have updates every week or two going forward.
Take care!

Hey everyone,
I hope all of your projects having been moving forward! I do have a few pictures of our monthly progress.
First, we created brackets to get the seats mounted to the frame rails:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2014/10/DSC00932_zpsa34818d8-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/Big%20Wig%20Race%20Cars/2014%20September%20work/DSC00932_zpsa34818d8.jpg.html)

Second, in an effort to keep the rear area behind the seats as clean looking as possible and to move some more of the weight in the car further back, we decided to mount the battery box right above the fuel cell. With the slope of the rear deck lid, we had to get a little creative. The battery needed to be tucked inside the confines of the car but still be accessible, if necessary. We came up with an idea to hinge the battery tray. We made the mount out of 7/8" Chromoly to keep the weight down. Here are the results:

Ray I just happened to pop over randomly from a link on SpeedHunters and must say I am overjoyed to see that you are back making progress. I still love this build, can't wait to see how it really runs when you're done. Keep up the action !
I still have never installed that RaceLogic T/C system, been too busy doing a widebody conversion on my Mustang (which is now almost complete).

Hey Kcrain,
Thanks for checking in! After 3-1/2 years of traveling back and forth from Houston to Louisiana on the weekends, my wife (a teacher) has FINALLY retired in May and has moved to Houston. We have spent the last few weekends unpacking and getting her settled in with me. I will have a lot more time formally spent on the road to dedicate to my projects now...
My sheetmetal guy has not worked on my car very much in the last couple of years but it looks like he is finally at a point where he can knock out the project... :fingersx:
Recently he completed the fuel cell area. Here are a few construction pictures:

I am PRAYING he keeps rolling through the next few months to knock out the rear deck area, the trans tunnel, the front inner fenders, and the rear wheel tubs. He will also make some tweaks to my existing floorpans and firewall to tie everything together.
When he knocks those areas out (hopefully by the fall), we will bring the Bug back to our shop and get the bodywork, wiring, and paint done so we can FINALLY get it out in the light of day by NEXT YEAR!!!

Thanks Lerm.
Yeah, when you can't afford to just drop your ride off at a high end shop, your alternative is to wait for the "after-hours" guy that has the talent to provide a service for you... I sure wish I had the time and abilities to learn some of the detail work myself (welding/tin work/etc.)... Otherwise, I can just hope he stays focused on knocking out the sheetmetal work and let me move on to the next steps!

Hey everyone,
I hope your projects are going well and you are finding time to enjoy them!
I have a short update for the month...
We were able to get the rear tubs built. Since the tin work is aluminum on this car, we chose a thicker material (twice as thick as the other panels) for the wheel tubs. With sticky road racing tires on the car, they will definitely be picking up rocks and dinging the panels over time. Therefore, I plan to source some kind of rhino liner material to coat the inner surfaces of the fiberglass fenders as well as the aluminum wheel tubs. Hopefully, they make a bed liner material that has a smoother texture than the normal, slip-resistant rough material you are used to seeing... To help ensure none of the road rash is transferred into the powder coated interior panels and engine bay inner fenders, these areas will be double-walled (separate panels interior versus exterior).
We started out with placing inserts into the rear frame rails:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/07/DSC01124_zpskdqnixuz-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01124_zpskdqnixuz.jpg.html)
We then built backing bars for the rear fenders to brace to:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/07/DSC01126_zpsh8hcg9yh-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01126_zpsh8hcg9yh.jpg.html)
We had previously built a small bumper bar across the back of the car right under the body panels to protect the fuel cell from a rear collision. I was worried about how we terminated these pipes... If hit from the perfect angle, it could have pushed this bar into one of the rear tires and created a blowout! Therefore, we capped off the bar on both ends.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/07/DSC01125_zpshltengj1-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01125_zpshltengj1.jpg.html)
We then tied these bumper bars into our triangulated brace to box everything in as well as give a rear bracing point for the fenders:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/07/DSC01127_zpsskumlpvx-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01127_zpsskumlpvx.jpg.html)
We then built the wheel tubs:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/07/DSC01128_zpsrtpedpdo-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01128_zpsrtpedpdo.jpg.html)

Hey Wayne,
Thanks for checking in! I actually do have a couple of months worth of updates. I got busy with life and didn't get last month's pictures posted. I'll blend the two months of progress together.
Here we go!
First of all, we got the other rear inner fender done:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/DSC01148202_zps2ipywxxl-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01148%202_zps2ipywxxl.jpg.html)

We then moved to the interior rear deck area. There are a few goals we were trying to achieve in this area. They included:
- Make sure that we keep the bottom side of the car relatively flat and not catch air and produce lift under the car.
- Have a thicker material on the bottom to handle road debris/rocks and not damage the interior fancy panels.
- Create a void area to mount a number of items that we didn't want exposed for aesthetics sake (i.e. - trans coolers, shifter box, stereo amp, wiring, etc.).
First we built the lower panels:

We have the dash in place and we placed the console in line with the dash. With the seat mounted as low as possible for center of gravity reasons, the console was too high and it didn't match up with the height of the rear deck panels:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/DSC01290202_zps23iasbao-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01290%202_zps23iasbao.jpg.html)
We sat the seat in the car and we positioned the console at an angle to clear my elbow and better align with the rear deck panels. Unfortunately, we didn't take pictures of the mockup...
The next step is to build the floor panels and the trans tunnel. We will extend the console sides to meet up with the trans tunnel.

He does nice work. I can't imagine fitting everything in there and making it look this nice. I know how tight it gets with only the little extra I'm packaging in my car, and you have 1/3 the room.
How are you making out with this storm passing through? Did you get hit hard? I hope all our southern member are OK.

Here's an example of what the finished product will look like. Initially, I envisioned powder coating the panels all black... These colors are REALLY growing on me! I may duplicate it... The aluminum panels in this picture have been covered with a matte tan powder coat. I would re-cover my Kirkey seats with a similar tan leather. I would use a ceramic coating (lizard skin, etc) on the floor and firewall panels. I will then place a layer of Dynamat-type material on those surfaces and finally cover the floor and firewall with a short pile carpet somewhat like what is depicted in this picture:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2015/10/Bug20interior20picture20with20painted20p-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/Bug%20interior%20picture%20with%20painted%20panels %202_zpsyled1qqn.jpg.html)
I think it really has a nice offset of colors between the black powder coated cage and the interior...
After we make all of the adjustments to the dash and console, it will also be covered in a simulated leather material to blend it all in.
Maybe one day soon!!! :headbang:

We were just fine with the storm. It wasn't too bad unless you were in a low area where you were affected from run-off. We only got about 10 inches over the weekend.
By the way, life just keeps getting in the way of progress! Just when my wife retires (at the end of May) and moves to Houston and gets the last "woman's touch" done on my house here, we get word from our company that they decided to merge our US Onshore operations into a single office and that office happens to be in Austin!! I have to report to my new work location by January 4th! I truly feel blessed having a great job through these trying times in the oilfield (thanks to Saudi Arabia for the trying times...) so I will definitely go wherever they send my paycheck! It's what pays for my hobbies and bad habits (impulse purchases, etc.)! :)
We were about to work with a builder in the Houston area to build a new home with a 9-car garage on it. I really miss my 50' x 60' shop I had in Louisiana... We spent this last weekend in Austin house-hunting. We got a builder to mock up a set of preliminary plans for a new home with a 6-car garage... We are going to insulate, heat, and cool (Mitsubishi units) the garage spaces. I will epoxy the floors and install a 4-post lift.
I am having to do a LOT of reduction. I have enough 1950's-1960's gas station memorabilia to fill up 4 of those stalls!!! I need to have a REALLY big garage sale. Just to get a guy to haul off a bunch of my stuff this last month, I gave him a drill press, table saw, chop saw, Dewalt drills, pneumatic nail and pin guns, a 454 engine, 3 Comp cams, pistons, springs, an engine hoist, etc. just to get him to haul off a bunch of other stuff (shelving, book cases, desk, etc.)!
It's going to be an interesting holiday season.
As long as I can keep my cars and my guns, I am good to go! :6gears: :machine:

Yeah, it has definitely changed our plans but if you've been in the oil and gas industry for as long as I have, you learn to take the bad with the good because the good definitely out weighs the bad! Austin is supposed to be a great place to live. We are actually looking forward to it after we figure out our living arrangement and how it's going to affect my car hobby!

I haven't done anything with my roll cage yet. I am still in the construction phase!
If you are referring to the picture above with the black roll cage and tan interior, that's another project that had its sheet metal work done by the same guy that is working on my car. I don't have any details on how the color was applied. In my case, when I get that far, the body will be removed and the entire frame and roll cage will be powder coated together. I will then choose a powder coat color for the interior aluminum panels and have it applied as well.

Yeah, prior to our recent week long house hunting trip, I had only been to Austin a handful of times. The hill country is beautiful and VERY different than Houston and Louisiana where I have lived my whole life...
We are really looking forward to the move and enjoying the area. With lakes within 10 minutes of our home, it looks like I might be back in the boat business... This time around it will probably be a PARTY barge instead of a ski boat ( and a couple of Sea Doos)!
We are going to COTA this Saturday for the US Vintage Nationals racing (SVRA) event. They plan to have 450 cars of all vintages. The Trans Am group and the Group 6 cars are my favorites! The present-day Trans Am cars will be racing this weekend also.
Here are a couple of my Texas A&M Sports Car Club classmates who are racing their vintage Trans Am cars this weekend:

Nice! Chris Sr spent a day with Mr Bittle recently. My understanding is it was a very pleasant meeting.
Gotta love seeing people drive the pants off the historic iron. I was down at Precision Machines in Lodi just before the Monterey Historics event at Laguna shooting an install article. Kevin was showing me all the paperwork on the car he was going to run. The "Bill Paul #47" Shelby is supposed to be the most raced Mustang in the country. The log book goes back to the 70s. Crazy stuff.

Hey guys,
Thanks for checking in!
I'm finally getting settled in our new home in Austin. Priorities of making mama happy and decking out the house has taken priority... My interior guy has gone MIA on me again... This "interior jail" has got to be as bad as any "paint jail" I have ever seen... We had some great progress for a few months and now he has gone dormant for another 4-5 months... I just need him to build floor boards, firewall and front inner fenders and I can get the car back in my shop to get wiring and paint done.
I'll let everyone know if I get him jump started again! Take care.

Hey Pipefitter,
I plan to go visit my sheetmetal guy during the Christmas holidays. I will get some dimension numbers for you. I am thinking the outside dimension on the front frame rails is 30". I am thinking the front frame rail rise is 4". I will verify them and get you an update within the next two weeks.

Hey guys,
Thanks for checking in! Par for the course, the build is barely progressing... It's been a real interesting last couple of years with work and moving multiple times. I have been spending a lot of my personal time endurance racing in my 1988 Mustang in the World Racing League. The project is still located at the sheet metal guy's place. But, it IS getting closer! We are pretty much down to work on the firewall, the inner fenders, front spoiler, splitter, rear wing mounting, and some fab work for underhood heat extraction...
Here are a few pictures of the last couple of months:
We first started with some thicker smooth panels for the underside of the cab so it could handle road rash/rocks/etc:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/12/mini20160617_floor_brackets202_zps9d15eq-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/mini-20160617_floor_brackets%202_zps9d15eqqw.jpg.html)

We then installed the more decorative, thinner material panels for the interior. There will be room between the top and bottom panels for application of a sound-deadening, heat protection medium such as Lizard skin/Dynamat/etc:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/12/mini20160625_floors202_zps9b0rtp5r-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/mini-20160625_floors%202_zps9b0rtp5r.jpg.html)
We then built the trans tunnel:

Our next step was to finish fabricating the dash to match the width of the car. The Bug is MUCH narrower than a Miata so we needed to trim about 3" off of both sides of the dash and fab some returns to the firewall:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/12/DSC01712202_zpsqphag0df-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01712%202_zpsqphag0df.jpg.html)

We also built an access door where the passenger air bag used to be so I can get to the electronics behind the dash if necessary (Holly Dominator EFI, Traction Control, Infinity Mastercell/Powercell, etc.):
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/12/DSC01713202_zpsl84uqdww-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01713%202_zpsl84uqdww.jpg.html)
We then fabricated a patch panel under the steering column:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2016/12/DSC01715202_zpsq1pzywsy-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC01715%202_zpsq1pzywsy.jpg.html)

And there we go! The dash setup is pretty much complete! As stated previously, I plan to cover the modified dash/console with a simulated leather to bring it all back together to look like a common unit.

After a friend offered to sell me her 73 Super Beetle for almost nothing, I started looking up V8 Beetles. I came across an article about building V8 Beetles which featured a picture of what I have now discovered is a rendering of your car. I searched and searched for more info on that car, but found nothing. A couple days ago I came across buildthreads.com and saw an interesting Beetle build. When I saw the red building in the background of one of the pics, I realized THIS was the car I was looking for.
Hey Goodyear,
Taking on a project that consists of 100% fabrication takes a lot of dedication... I wish you good luck with the project! If you decide to go for it, let me know. I may have a number of parts I have replaced or upgraded that you could use. You are welcome to them.

Hey everyone,
I hope your projects are coming along! We are actually making monthly headway with the car again and I am getting excited!
Here are a few update pictures:
First, we made a few tweaks to areas that needed some relief. We needed to notch the frame rail to clear my lower radiator hose:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/03/IMG_1506_zpso4wgmvso-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/IMG_1506_zpso4wgmvso.jpg.html)
We then extended the lower radiator mount brackets to get a little more tilt back of the radiator:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/03/IMG_1507_zpsgzgfncbt-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/IMG_1507_zpsgzgfncbt.jpg.html)

We then moved on to building the inner fenderwells. We used a heavier gage aluminum for these. I will also cover them with some kind of Rhino Liner material for rock damage prevention:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/03/IMG_1501_zpspqi8zell-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/IMG_1501_zpspqi8zell.jpg.html)

We will now build decorative coverup panels to dress up the engine bay. They will close the gaps between the inner fenders and the firewall.

And for some more good and expensive news... It's funny and sad at the same time when you have a project drag on for a LONG time... New and improved products come out and I am very tempted to switch gears on certain parts of the project and gravitate to the new items. In addition, things that have been really bugging me about the setup have had time to mess with my mind enough to jump off and make changes! Here is what is in store over the next couple of months:
First issue: GROUND CLEARANCE. This vehicle is a planned street car. Therefore, it needs to safely traverse the crappy roads and all of their obstacles (potholes, speed bumps, angled driveways, etc.). Therefore, I am trying to eliminate a few of the lowest points on the drivetrain and also add some more fun to the ride! Here's some evidence of my concern:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/03/DSC041411_zpset901fdy-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC04141-1_zpset901fdy.jpg.html)
With the oil pan being just 4" off of the ground at ride height, it has really got me worried.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/03/DSC04220_zpshmzhci0w-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC04220_zpshmzhci0w.jpg.html)

Therefore, I am investing in a Dry Sump system! I will need to decide between ARE, Stef's, Aviaid, Daily, Coleman, or Peterson.

Second and really big decision... I was convinced that with the extremely small cab and limited leg room that I was relegated to an automatic transmission in the car. The car has had a Turbo 400 in it since 1985. My concern has been two-fold... ground clearance and sustainability to accept the abuse it will have to endure and not turn into a grenade! And if that wasn't enough to worry about, the transmission pan is just as low as the engine's oil pan with the same road clearance concerns.
I have researched up and down the internet for a viable option for an upgraded Turbo 400 that could handle the torque, on and off the throttle constantly, heat buildup, engine breaking, and the like. Then, to get the close gear ratios I wanted along with an overdrive, I had to add the Gear Vendors. Then the paddle shifters... Price-wise, a built up Tremec is a MUCH less expensive option as well as the reliability and fun factors that are thrown in for good measure! Therefore, when my sheetmetal guy told me he felt he could remodel the cage configuration at my feet to allow enough room to operate a clutch pedal, that was the green light I was looking for!!! :jump:
So, the first thing I did was order a new set of Tilton pedal assemblies:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/03/IMG_1586_zpscipubtsb-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/IMG_1586_zpscipubtsb.jpg.html)
We got them in, removed my present Wilwood setup, and test fit them. I'm sorry we didn't think to take pictures of the test fitting but we feel it is all doable!!! :fingersx:
My sheetmetal guy will cut out the affected rollbars and replace them with additional room.
Presently, we are using a Tremec "Elite" dealer to rebuild our racecar's TKO600 transmission. They are building it back stronger and better than original. The company's name is Liberty Gears. I discussed the Bug project with them and they assure me they can take one of their T56 Magnum transmissions (normally rated for 700 ft-lbs of torque) and boost its power handling capability to 1,000 ft-lbs!

Awesome project Ray. I'm building a 65 bug with a 6.0 LS up front. I'm using a highly modified s10 frame with ridetech suspension. I'm just wondering what you're using for the hood hinges? Also, what are the measurements of your radiator? Have you had a chance to weigh the car yet?
Thanks, John

Hey John,
Good luck with the project! If I was starting my project today, I'd definitely be building it with an LS motor... But, I'm too far into this build to make that change!
To answer your questions, here's the hood hinges I'll be using:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/20170416_222606_zpsxmuewbas-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/20170416_222606_zpsxmuewbas.jpg.html)
I found these from a guy in Australia. They have struts that go with them. I think they'll look pretty cool. If you google "Billet hood hinges Beetle", there are a number of different options out there.
My radiator is a Ron Davis "Dual-Pass" radiator. The inlet and outlet are on the same side of the radiator since it makes two passes through the unit. The dimensions for the radiator are 16" tall x 31" wide. If you have an engine with less horsepower that won't build as much heat as mine, you may opt to go with a radiator that's 26"-27" wide and it would fit between your frame rails and probably fit better. Since I'm going to have a vented hood for the hot air to escape from under the hood, it would have been nice to fit the radiator between the frame rails. If I could have done that, I would have been able to run the radiator with a negative slope on it so the exhaust of the radiator would have had an upward trajectory to it... But, since I needed all of the cooling capacity that I could get, we'll just build an aluminum shrouding to help direct the air up right in front of the motor.
Early on, we did scale the car. At the time, the car was right at 2,400 pounds with a 50/50 weight distribution. Since then, we've added aluminum interior panels, etc. Therefore, I'm thinking the car will finish out right between 2,500-2,600 pounds by the time it's full of liquids.
Don't hesitate to contact me if you have questions along the way. Have fun with the project! I can't wait to follow along.

Hey everyone,
I hope all of your projects are moving along! We have made a little progress the last few days.
As mentioned previously, as soon as my sheetmetal guy let me know that he felt we could revamp the rollcage at my feet to accommodate a 3rd pedal, I made the big decision to scrap the automatic transmission and go with a souped up Tremec T56 Magnum! Therefore, we were able to verify the spacing and get the rollcage adjusted.
Here's what we did. First of all, we cut out the section to re-vamp:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/cage_cutaway_zpsabcmirxp-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/cage_cutaway_zpsabcmirxp.jpg.html)
We then added a pedestal for the roll bar to land on and started replacing the tubes. We also had to notch out the body a little to make sure the body would clear the new bars. I will need to remove the body so I can powdercoat the frame and cage. We can then lower the body back onto the chassis:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/cage_chassis_pad_zps64hc7len-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/cage_chassis_pad_zps64hc7len.jpg.html)
And this is how the re-vamped bars look like:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/cage_kickout_1_zpssnn880v1-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/cage_kickout_1_zpssnn880v1.jpg.html)
MUCH more leg room to operate three pedals:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/cage_kickout_2_zpsocg8tpty-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/cage_kickout_2_zpsocg8tpty.jpg.html)
We mocked the pedals up to make sure they looked and felt good:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/04/cage_tilton_1_zpsl0zv3wwv-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/cage_tilton_1_zpsl0zv3wwv.jpg.html)
And we are good to go!! I will get the new transmission and Quick-Time bellhousing ordered to see if we need to modify the trans tunnel or any of the other sheetmetal. We do know we will need to modify the location of the trans mount.

I know for myself Its a double edged sword looking at build threads. Its cool to see how people attack off the wall problems and such, But then you see something cool that would work on your own project, You sit there with the Sawzall in your hand staring at the work thats already been done, its fine the way it is but just knowing it could have been done a little different or a newer part would be just a little bit better. To chop or not to chop!

LOL!!! Ain't that the truth!! It seems that every time I make some headway with the car, I see something that would have been PERFECT if I had done it that way on my car also... If I didn't enjoy the build process so much, I would be a lot more crazy about this.

Thanks Ray, for my hood hinges I want to use a standard type like a camaro uses only smaller so that they don't go thru the firewall like the vw ones do. I'd like to use a billet hinge but I haven't seen a smaller version yet. Someone had a build thread quite a while ago where they did that with some hinges they found at a junk yard.
Right now for my steering box I have an 87 Monte Carlo ss box but it sits at the front of the frame rail right where the radiator needs to go. With that there the biggest radiator I can fit would be a 16" wide x 24" tall downflow. But would that be enough to cool it? I'm only planning on about 400 hp. I don't want to put the radiator in the back so my only other option would be to change to a r&p set up. I'm not sure what the best thing to do there is.
Also, what are you using for the hood latch? The stock vw latch?
Thanks, John

Hey John,
Thanks for checking in! My sheetmetal guy has been busy with other things for the last month or so. Therefore, not much to show as far as progress right now...
I've been ordering parts though! A number of them have long lead times on them so they'll be coming in over the next month or so.
First of all, as previously discussed, the souped up Tremec T56 Magnum is being built right now at Liberty Gears. It will ship in about a month along with a Quick Time Bell Housing.
I've settled on my clutch setup and have placed the order. Thanks to reading up on Danny Popp's Corvette, I've ordered a really cool piece from Quarter Master. It's a 7-1/4" setup that actually runs on an automatic type flexplate instead of a flywheel. I stole a couple of Danny's pictures to show the difference in weight! Right at a 31 pound rotating weight savings!!! It can actually handle around 1400hp!!! :headbang:

I have also chosen my next project! Even before I finish my Bug, I got the green light from my wife to build a street legal Track Day car. Factory Five has just come out with their 3rd generation Type 65 coupe. They built a brand new space frame for it, widened the body for comfort and bigger tires, and they added an option to help it's aerodynamics versus the original setup. I like the nostalgic look of the car but I REALLY love the new aero package. They just got through building a mascot car for Snap On in 5 days with a team comprised of guys from Factory Five and Snap On. I think I'm going to build a twin car of theirs, color and all!
Here's a few pictures of it:

In the meantime, I'm in need of a front spoiler/splitter and rear wing setup for my Bug project. Well, unfortunately, an air-cooled Bug is not a real hot car to build a lot of cool stuff for... So... just like everything else on the car that needs to be stolen from another more popular/current car or fabricated from scratch, I needed to explore my options. I've been scouring the world for suitable products to fit on my Bug project. I almost ordered products from Europe's Fun Cup cars. I also looked into ordering products from a Japanese company. None of these options really appealed to me and there's a lot of risk ordering from overseas. Therefore, since I really like the look of the new Type 65 Coupe, I started studying their new products on the car. I did some cut and paste simulations and thought there might be a potential of the front setup working on my Bug! So, I went on and ordered a front Spoiler setup to check it out...
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/05/DSC_3890_zpsgpnjufld-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/DSC_3890_zpsgpnjufld.jpg.html)
It came in and we put it in place and it looks VERY promising!!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/05/5_zpsgjwblq9b-1.png (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/5_zpsgjwblq9b.png.html)
It's close enough that we know we can tweak the fiberglass to match my car!!! I went on and placed the order for the carbon fiber Splitter. We will make some vertical cuts a few inches apart along the outside edges of the spoiler to get it to conform to car's shape. We will drop a few screws to hold the shape. When we are happy with the shape, I will glass in the new shape!
Factory Five has done some wind tunnel testing with their new aero package.

To keep the products somewhat balanced to their testing, I've decided to run the same rear wing (APR's GT-1000) as these pictures:

I'm placing the order for this wing next week. It comes without any pedestals. You have to custom build your own to work with your car. This really doesn't matter because there isn't anything out there that would have worked anyway! :naughty:

Hey Wayne,
I enjoy the build process as much as anyone else but I really look forward to a project that has a lot of straight forward installations with only needing a few small tweaks to make it your own!
Hopefully, I'll have the money to order the kit by next year! :fingersx:

Ray, great news on going manual transmission and dry sump (I'd go with ARE personally). I totally understand the problems that arise with a long build when technological advances and other industry changes make you reconsider choices you've made.
At some point you have to bring each project to an end point and drive the thing, get some enjoyment out of it and let it live some life! You can surely tear it down again later on and make further changes as you see fit. I think getting some use out of a car is important after a certain period of time.
I can't help myself but to suggest your choice of ECU and display is an area that could use another think, sorry to be an armchair critic, I really love your project.

Any updates Ray?
Hey John,
Thanks for checking in. I have been traveling with work quite a bit as well as hitting a lot of college football games... We have season tickets to both Texas A&M as well as LSU so, one weekend it's a 2-hour drive to the game and on the LSU weekends it's a 6-1/2 hour drive!
Very little has been going on with the car... I am waiting on my sheetmetal prison again...
I have received a number of parts over the last few months. They include:
The seats I purchased for the car many years ago don't have much of a finished look to them. I will use them on a future project. Here's the previous seats:

Here's what I just replaced them with:

I also received my APR GT-1000 dual-element carbon fiber rear wing:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/10/IMG_1857_zpsiadbpeik-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/IMG_1857_zpsiadbpeik.jpg.html)

Also, when I decided to change over from an automatic transmission setup to the 6-speed, I needed to create a little more depth for the throw of the clutch and not feel like my legs were cramped up. Therefore, we decided to construct a "footbox" that would extend the depth of the footwell into the engine bay about 1-1/2" to 2". By doing this, we needed to re-arrange the steering setup to open up that space. Dave at Wizard Fabrication was VERY generous in trading out my 16" "Steer Clear" for an 8" version:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2017/10/IMG_1839_zpseh7mqbsh-1.jpg (http://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/IMG_1839_zpseh7mqbsh.jpg.html)
We will need to index the Steer Clear towards the driver's inner fender and use a few more u-joints to clear the new footbox and still clear the headers and motor mount.
To be continued...

Wow Ray some big changes. Do those seats work with a Hans set up or are they to keep the helmet from going side to side? The rear wing should give you some down force. That looks like some serious oiling system. Very nice.

Hey Wayne,
Yeah, the seats are made to work with a head restraint system. I use a NecksGen (Rev 2 Lite) setup. The "wings" sticking out at the top of the seat are to minimize your side-to-side head motion by giving your helmet a nice area to work within. The notched out areas below these wings work really nice for your side-to-side line of sight.
The rear wing is 71" wide! It should really make some downforce. We have to build the wing mounts (out of 1/2" thick aluminum!) to fall about where my sheetmetal guy is holding the wing. You run the main wing at 0 degrees at normal ride height position and the second smaller wing has an adjustable range of 10 - 52 degrees! The wood pieces on the ends of the wing are just installed for shipping. I have some really nice carbon fiber end plates that go with the wing.
The bug looks amazing and all the new updated upgrades will be well worth it in the end, especially the T56, that's going to be a blast rowing through the gears in.
Your wife is an amazing woman, that FFR Coupe is an insane car. Snap On did an awesome video of there recent Coupe build.

I am going to be switching over to a rear wing similar to yours (just a lot more narrow). Have you got anything done with the mounts? Do you know what its going to mount to? I was thinking of doing the mounts right off the body, below the window and to the sides of the vents. I would love to see how your turns out to give me some inspiration!

Hey Zilla,
It feels awkward not knowing your first name... not much going on with my project... I wish that wasn’t the case. I have been promised some progress this month. We will see.
Fortunately, I have one of my roll cage bars that passes right under the body above the old engine bay. We will tie the wing mounts into it. I purposely ordered the width of the stantion mounts to match the width of the outermost two louvers above rear hood. We will weld two 1/2” plates to the roll cage bar. This plate will have drilled holes in it. Then, we will use two 1/2” aluminum plates per side that will pass through the body. They will be drilled. From there, we will use a 1/2” aluminum plate to construct the two wing stantions. I will post up pictures as soon as we get some progress.
I am really happy to hear you are going to keep the Bug. I have dealt with many phases in my life where I have purged projects for one reason or another and lived to regret it later... I wish I had every one of them back now. I miss my 1965 convertible Corvette more than the others... I would love to have kept it and done a really nice restomod on it. If you have the space, fight the urge. You won’t regret it. The front splitter mod looks great on the car. You need a rear wing to balance it off!

Hi Ray, it's good to see this project still making progress. It has always been my motivation on my '54 Beetle. That's the mid-engine car that has your old front suspension in it. I finished building our new house (my own two hands) and moved into my shop on the property. My project is back on the front burner and we are actually making progress. I like the current direction your car is taking. The trans swap, Body modifications and tin work are looking great! What part of the country is home these days? I think you have had a move or two since I last spoke with you.

Hey Wayne,
Thanks for checking in! Sorry for the delay. I have been traveling a lot with work and not on here much lately... No, we haven't been racing this year. I had to focus on keeping the wife happy this year so I could continue with my expensive hobbies! I just finished a 750sf patio on the back of the home for our enjoyment and it drained all of my discretionary funds for the year! No vacations, no racing, etc. But, that's okay. We will enjoy the patio for a lot of the year. I did install remote control screens and hydro-mist fans but it is still extra hot this summer. Especially since it's only July! Usually, August and September are our hottest months. I can't imagine it getting much hotter than right now!
Take care and I hope you and your family are having a great summer!

Hey Paul,
Long time since we've talked! I'm glad to hear you are moving forward with your Bug project! I look forward to seeing pictures of your new shop and your project. I'm glad you decided to not sell it and finish it. It seems that mine will never get finished... Nothing new to report on my project. I wish the guy would finish the basic sheetmetal on the inner fenders and firewall. I don't think his motivation is there any more. If he could just finish those areas so it matched the rest of the sheetmetal work, I could pick it up and move on. I guess we will see what the next few months hold.
Yeah, I initially moved from Louisiana to Houston in 2012. In 2016, they transferred me to Austin. Hopefully, that's where I will stay!
I will post any progress when it happens. Good luck with yours! Take care.

Hey guys and gals,
It's been a long time since I've checked in with y'all! I hope everyone's projects have been moving forward and have been enjoying them! It's been a LONG dry spell with mine... But, hopefully the time is right to move on to the next level of completion. Over the last 1-1/2 years I have FINALLY got my sheetmetal guy to be motivated enough to find a stopping point so I could pick up the car and move forward. My biggest concern pertained to stopping his work at a point that would have an incomplete portion of the car. I didn’t want someone else or myself to try and match his work. His attention to detail and quality work would have been very difficult to duplicate.
So, even though I envisioned him performing a number of other tasks, we felt it was appropriate to finish the obvious sheetmetal work that needed completion to produce the symmetry in the engine bay and in the interior. So, this update will have pictures that have occurred over the last 1-1/2 years. They include the following:
As previously discussed, we replaced a couple of the roll cage bars to accommodate the clutch pedal. Along with the added space to the left side of my feet, it didn't seem to have a natural pedal depth with a flat firewall. Therefore, we decided to construct a bump-out for the pedal throw.

Previously, we had installed a 16" center-to-center "Steer Clear" to step the steering from waist-height to right along the frame rail. This made it a straight shot from the firewall to the rack-and-pinion avoiding the headers. With the newly installed pedal kick out panel, we needed to re-route the steering shaft setup. Wizard Fabrication was VERY gracious to swap out my 16" Steer Clear for an 8" model. To miss the kick out panel, we needed to index it further to the driver's side. In addition, since we were dealing with more severe angles, we needed to add a double u-joint as well as a couple of fixed mount bearings to keep the assembly from binding up.

After we finished the pedal kick-out panel and re-vamped the steering linkage, we moved on to finishing out the hood hinge installation. After we finished the hinge and gas strut setups, we finished out the decorative second firewall as well as the dress-up inner front fenders:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/04/Hale_engine_compartment_2_zpsn9yosoh7-1.jpg (https://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/Hale_engine_compartment_2_zpsn9yosoh7.jpg.html)

The decorative second firewall is doing a few things for me. First, it dresses up the firewall area by hiding the Steer Clear and the extended pedal box. Secondly, it gives me about a 1" thick space between the inner and outer panels so I can install some type of sound deadening and heat resistant material between the two panels.

To finish out the sheetmetal work in the interior, we moved the brake/clutch reservoirs to the side so they could be accessed after I get the dash covered:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/04/hale_reservoir_1_zpsyzqarcr8-1.jpg (https://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/hale_reservoir_1_zpsyzqarcr8.jpg.html)
And here we have the finished sheetmetal interior!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/04/hale_dash_driver_side_zpsctxx3opr-1.jpg (https://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/hale_dash_driver_side_zpsctxx3opr.jpg.html)
As previously mentioned, the entire body is removable so I can get the frame/roll cage powder coated. After the body is dropped back on the car, we needed to tie everything together with some nice door sills. Here's how they came out:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/04/hale_door_sill_1_zpssx14iyol-1.jpg (https://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/hale_door_sill_1_zpssx14iyol.jpg.html)
To get a feel for the finished product, my sheetmetal guy pulled the protective covering off of one of the inner fenders to reveal the beauty of his craftmanship:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/04/hale_wheel_tub_1_zpspqrvcqmq-1.jpg (https://s241.photobucket.com/user/454bug/media/hale_wheel_tub_1_zpspqrvcqmq.jpg.html)
As previously mentioned, I will powdercoat all of the aluminum panels a certain color. The jury is still out on the final color of the car as well as the powdercoated aluminum panels. The underside of the inner fenders will also receive a coating of some sort of Rhino Liner to protect the somewhat soft aluminum from road rash.

So, now the car is ready to be picked up... But, with the current "Shelter at Home" requirement, I don't have any friends local to help me go pick the car up! When our company decided to have everyone work from home, my work buddies that care about cars actually traveled back to Louisiana to be closer to their families. It will be one more month before they will even consider letting us get back to some level of normalcy. My garage is waiting anxiously for that moment in time!
I hope everyone is keeping themselves and their families safe in these crazy times! Take care!

Hi Ray! great to see you post this progress. The metal work came out beautiful. The extra room for your feet was a good idea, you don't want to miss one of those pedals in a race.
I know what you mean about not being able to pick up the car, mine is getting the wiring done in the next state over (RI) and they have check points and stop all out of state vehicles and see if what your doing is a necessity. I don't know what they would say when I tell them I'm going to check on my classic car.
Stay safe !

Just looked through a few pages of this for the first time myself. I know it's taken a slight bit of time to get to where you're at now, but that's just the price of doing built not bought for us normal folk. My vehicle has been in progress for 27 years now, though drivable most of the time, and nowhere near completed, changing directions every few years. So I'm in there for the long haul with ya here.
I'm not in the bug club so to speak, but pulling up to a local bug meet in your project completed would be a hell of a good time.

Ray - your Bug is moving in a better direction then mine. I currently have no engine once again.... Maybe next year.
Hey Sean,
It looks like I'm finally getting to bring the car home soon. Whenever we get a green light to get out of the "Shelter at Home" situation!
I see you have a stock engine for your Bug now. I'm looking forward to your progress report after you get the harness delivered!

Hi Ray! great to see you post this progress. The metal work came out beautiful. The extra room for your feet was a good idea, you don't want to miss one of those pedals in a race.

Hey Wayne,
I hope you and your family are safe and sound with the craziness going on in New York/New Jersey area. Massachusetts isn't that far away... :seizure:
It's great to hear you're getting real close on your car. Getting the wiring done is means your inching closer and closer to getting it on the road!

Hey Joe,
Life has a crazy way of throwing constant curve balls at you! Since I started this build, I've changed employment, moved twice, went through two downturns in my profession's industry (oil & gas), had 2 children's weddings, had 3 grandchildren born, built a MEGA patio on the back of my house to appease the wife, etc., etc. I spent a lifetime of prioritizing other things but I eventually come back around to working on cars again and again. This project has been the most frustrating because of the sheer amount of custom work. Being a normal dude with a normal job, I can't afford the high end shop cost so I just have to exhibit patience and get things done when I can.
I'm sure others can relate. I'm not complaining. I love my life, family, and friends. I just wish I would hit the lottery so I could have these projects complete and enjoying them more! :rotfl:
I'm not getting any younger (59 years young!) :headbang:

Oh man, Of all the bug projects I've found on the internets this one is the most thorough. Hell, I even joined the forum to pick your brain on some stuff.
My big question - how is the body bolted to the frame? (I can kinda see some tabs in the pictures) More importantly, did you re-use the original body locations and heater channels, or did you make new steel sections?
Follow up - how sealed is the floor? Is there a gap under the custom sheet metal floor / sills?
I understand it is a track / nice weather car - so water isn't as big of a concern, but I wanted to get mine to sit pretty closed off from the elements. Also mine is pretty rusty where the channels are, so I'd have to make new channel sections. (or weld it all to flat plate.
I attached some pictures of the bug and the plans for the future for fun.
Thanks for taking the time!!

Hey Backlash,
Thanks for checking in!
You are welcome to search through my build thread and catch some discussions on the mounting of the body to the frame. For instance, I have copied a few pictures from one of the posts from page 40 of this thread:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/12/DSC03044-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/12/DSC03048-1.jpg
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/12/DSC03051-1.jpg
As you can see, we cut out the heater channels on both sides of the body. We welded in flat plate in place of the channels.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/12/DSC03053-1.jpg
You can see where we'll cut to by the white line marked underneath:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2010/12/DSC03061-1.jpg
We than built mounting connections on the bottom of the body to meet these tabs. My sheetmetal guy built some close out plates to cover this up.
To answer your question about the gaps under the car, after the exhaust is fitted, we will see what space is needed to be covered up and/or insulated. As previously discussed, I will powder coat all aluminum panels. After they are installed in place, there will be a layer of material applied to the bottom side of the panels. This "lizard skin" type product will help with sealing, temperature control, and sound deadening to some degree.
As you mentioned, I'm not really concerned with a perfect waterproof fit since I doubt this vehicle will ever experience rain/bad weather!
Good luck with your project! I look forward to seeing a build thread on it on one of these sites. When you get started, send me a link to where it will be located. Take care! :headbang:

Because this project has drug on for so long, it has experienced just about every type of "scope creep" possible. The last piece of the project that hasn't changed was the engine. Well, now it has. My car has only been at my house for a week and look what's happened:

If you haven't been to the "For Sale - Parts" page lately, I posted my drive train there! The last big piece of the puzzle to transform my hotrod is to install of a de-stroked LS7 (388 or 400 cubic inch). 8,500 rpm, 725-750 hp, 575-585 torque. I want a zinger!!
The low torque, high rpm will suit the 2,500# car much better.
Backed by a Liberty Gears T56 Magnum!

Wow! Looking for more power ? lol
Actually coming down about 100hp or so... But MUCH less torque (~250 less torque). With this light, relatively shorter wheelbase (96"), it needs less torque and more rpm's! I have raced my '89 Mustang for a number of years now and the sustained, high rpm's needed on a lot of these long sweeping turns is much better handled with extra rpm's. I envisioned using lower rpm's and torquing my way around the track with the big block but I don't think the longevity of the motor would be there. The last thing I would want to experience is a connecting rod coming through the block at 150 mph and oil bathing my tires!!! :drive1:
I am making REALLY good deals on brand new parts that have done nothing but help me mock things up. Someone is going to save a LOT of money.
I've already sold my overdrive, F/I intake, and valve covers. I've got a lot of other parts I need to get listed. 95% of the parts are all brand new.
I could list these parts on other sites. But, I want to start here because this is where I've made my internet home for the last 12 years. I want to let this community get first shot at parts before I list them on Racing Junk and other sites. I hope I can help out a number of other site members get their project some needed parts.
If I can sell a few of the bigger pieces, I can order my motor, LS bellhousing, dry sump stuff, etc.
To be continued...

Hey everyone,
As always, I hope all of your projects have been coming along for you. I have REALLY enjoyed this working from home since March! The hour saved every day from no commuting has been great spending it out in the garage. In addition, I've been able to jump out there during my lunch break as well.
As mentioned earlier, I've made the decision to sell my BBC setup and go LS. I've been successful in selling some parts so far. I'm only advertising right now on Pro Touring. If I get closer to needing my new motor some time next year, I will step up my advertising when the time is right. I wanted to give this awesome community of gear heads first chance at everything since this is where I've spent the last 12 years!
I have a few updates I wanted to post. I learned a few things over the years with this project. Therefore, instead of purchasing my motor early on and then it sitting for extended periods of time, I decided to purchase a mock-up LS engine. I will make my engine purchase much closer to when I am ready for it! Fortunately, I found a local company just a few miles from my house that produces every conceivable engine made with dimensionally correct layout of bolt patterns across the entire model. You can install headers, intakes, water pumps, oil pans, etc. on it. VERY cool! And it only weighs about 40 pounds.

I received my Quick Time LS Low Profile bellhousing. Therefore, I got the T56 Magnum installed. I had no idea the transmission had a "normal" 5 degree indexing toward the driver... When I installed a White Lightning shifter, I had to use a 2-1/4" offset in it to get lined up with my console:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/07/IMG_2733JPGwidth1920height1080fitbounds-1.jpg (https://app.photobucket.com/u/454bug/p/a44d69fe-d4b1-4f2c-b1da-329cad689a2f)

Now, with a higher revving engine, I needed to match my differential to this new setup. Since I had previously swapped over to a 35-spline floater setup, I needed a new pumkin to match. I selected Strange's HD PRO Aluminum chunk with their 35-spline "S-Track" torque-biased setup with 3.70 gears:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/07/IMG_2782jpgwidth1920height1080fitbounds-1.jpg (https://app.photobucket.com/u/454bug/p/0b741fe8-de9c-45dc-9eef-9f25f790c900)
In addition, I have been racing my '89 Mustang for the last 6-7 years. I installed Maximum Motorsports torque arm setup on it and I loved the difference it made to the car! Therefore, I am losing my top bars on my Bug's rear setup and doing the same thing. I shopped around for a while to see what products were available. Since I have a Chassiswork's rear clip and Fab 9 housing, I decided to go with their torque arm setup:

With the removal of the top canted control arms, the housing needs to be located with the use of a Watts Link or a Panhard bar. I decided to go with a Panhard bar. I located the brackets I need to build my Panhard bar setup from UB Machine:

I also have a few changes for the front suspension as well! A number of years ago, I got GMR to build me a set of spindles and hubs. To get the correct geometry (instant center and roll center) that I want to run, I just wasn't getting enough clearance between my front tires and the top of the inner fenders. In addition, the bottom of my bellhousing and transmission were hanging a little too low for street driving. Therefore, I checked around on available products that would remedy my situation. I settled on Speedtech's AFX spindles. I looked at their "Extreme" spindles but they had too much drop in them as well.

I did end up using their Extreme steering arms for better turn-in while autocrossing since it provides much better Ackermann effect:

I worked with the guys at QA1 for my ball joints. They were great to work with! I needed Chrysler "small" screw-in housings with 2nd Gen Camaro ball studs. No problem! Great guys! I will be back in touch with them soon for my Carbon Fiber Driveshaft! :headbang:

As an added measure of convenience/safety, I wanted to have the ability to raise my front end if necessary to aid in loading the car in a trailer, deal with a sloped driveway, etc. While checking out the Supercar Kit cars, I saw a product used with these cars that's similar to the product used on the new C8 Corvettes. This company sells a kit that can lift the car 1", 1-1/2", or 2-1/2". I selected the 2-1/2" model. That lift number is at the shock. Since my shocks are installed at an angle, that probably translates to about a 2" rise when needed. This isn't the exact kit (this one is for all 4 corners), but it gives you an idea of the product.

This is an example of them installed. With my 7" Penske shocks, I will still be able to run a 10" spring with the setup:

You may have wondered why I went with Mid-Length headers this time around. I've decided to have as smooth as possible undercarriage on the car. I plan to construct a belly pan on the car. The Bug normally has running boards on it. With my extended fenders on the car, these running boards are extended on each end to match up with the fenders. I've decided to construct my own sheet metal running boards. I want to make them "deep" enough to house a set of sidepipes on the car. I've always liked the sound of the C2 Corvette's chambered muffler sidepipes. Therefore, that's what I'm going to construct for my car.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/07/IMG_2892JPGwidth1920height1080fitbounds-1.jpg (https://app.photobucket.com/u/454bug/p/96812e62-4839-4502-bec9-092001b84f89)
With the Mid-Length headers, I'll be able to exit from under the car right behind the front fenders and carry right down the side of the car. I plan to have heat sleeves placed on the pipes/mufflers to ensure I don't affect any paint or burn any legs! For the events that may have a decibel rating limitation, I plan to construct a "quieter" exhaust version with Cobra mufflers with packing. There will be a V-band clamp at the collectors to facilitate this quick swap out when necessary.

Do you have more info on those shock collar things, like where to get them? I'd like to look into that.
On those mufflers, those are the ones I love to run. They sound outstanding on LS engines. The last set I put on were on my mother's 2001 Silverado with an HO 5.3. You can quiet them down but keep the same tone by putting 12 inch glass packs at the very back of the exhaust, although where you'll find 12 extra inches on a sidepiped Bug is beyond me. If you ran the exhaust out the back, they'd fit between the axle and tips. But as they are, they won't be obnoxiously loud anyway.

Hey Vimes,
I unpacked my actual setup:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/07/IMG_2907JPGwidth1920height1080fitbounds-1.jpg (https://app.photobucket.com/u/454bug/p/b5084ea4-71ff-401b-b54f-badbb2ce75e1)
Here's a link to their website: https://www.ramliftpro.com/
They are located in the Houston, Texas area. The lifting is controlled by a momentary switch. I discussed their operation with the owner. He said you can stop the lift at any height within its lift range. He said you could operate your vehicle at any desired lift. Pretty cool stuff!
In reference to the chambered mufflers, I plan to run these on track days and around town to Coffee and Cars events, etc. If there is a decibel limit event I want to compete in, I did order a set of Classic Chambered's "Cobra" mufflers as well. As mentioned, since it will be a very simple exhaust run from the V-Band clamp at the header, I will swap the whole system, when necessary.
Both mufflers have a 3" inside diameter:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/07/cobra_injpgwidth1920height1080fitbounds-1.jpg (https://app.photobucket.com/u/454bug/p/7548b40e-cb47-44ed-9722-993ffef7adfc)
The Cobra mufflers have fiberglass packing in them to quiet them down and the Powerstick chambered mufflers don't. The chambered mufflers have a 3-1/2" outside diameter and the Cobra mufflers are 4". I'll build everything to fit the 4" diameter.
As mentioned, I will have both system covered with Heat Sleeves. Their material is stretchable from 2" - 4" to fit over the pipe/mufflers:

I can't wait to hear them on an LS motor. They only LS motor I've heard them on is Detroit Speed's 3rd Gen Camaro

Hey Boosted,
Thanks! Because the Bug's cab sits between the fenders, we actually had to cut 4" off of each side of the dash to match the width needed.
The gauge cluster pod works really well with the RLC Racing Logging unit I purchased a numbers of years back:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/07/IMG_29148JPGwidth1920height1080fitbounds-1.jpg (https://app.photobucket.com/u/454bug/p/0270dd9d-3673-4b14-8931-1eee76fabc04)

I plan to place a couple of analog gauges flanking the logger:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2020/07/DSC03848JPGwidth1920height1080fitbounds-1.jpg (https://app.photobucket.com/u/454bug/p/0881b7be-5839-4b33-b3ea-ba61a76d9752)
Unfortunately, the company has since went out of business. I think I have all the bits and pieces to still use it. If it craps out, I can swap it out at that time. I have too much invested in it to go a different way now!
As previously mentioned, when all of the modifications are complete, I plan to cover the entire dash/console with a simulated leather to pull it all together.

Thanks for the link.
On those mufflers, don't be surprised if you find yourself cruising down the highway in a range between 50MPH to 80MPH, WOT going up and downshifting for the decel just to listen to it. They sound awesome on an LS engine, especially with a crossover.
