Need home HVAC experts.

Today I found out my home AC unit has a bad compressor & to fix it will cost $2900, or could cost $3500 for a new "A" coil, if the leak is found in the existing one & cannot be fixed. Existing unit is 11 years old. If I fix the existing, its warranty is 2 years.

Or they quoted me for a new Goodman 3 ton, 13 SEER, matching internal & external unit would cost $7600. Warranty is 10 years.

This is a heat pump by the way.

I found a place in Kentucky that sells the same unit as above for $2130.

I understand that $2130 does not include the labor. But really $5500 to install.

Please, I am open for any & all suggestions/advice.

The $2130 for the new one sounds like a no brainer but I would do some calling around for install labor. If it is the same unit you already have install should not be that expensive.

Not the same as the one I already have, but the same as the new one I was quoted $76xx.xx installed. The only difference was the installed one had a different filter than the factory unit.

I work for an HVAC guy. The cost of overhead in this industry is enormous, but that's a little steep. I would shop around.

It takes some time to find a good HVAC guy that will not rip you off.....too much.

Try to stay away from Goodman if you can. I'm an HVAC contractor. I repair more Goodman's than any other brand. I deal with Trane units. They cost more but you get what you pay for. Ask friends & collegues who they used. Word of mouth is always your best bet.

Prices will be different depending on where you are in the US. Be sure to change your coil with the heat pump or you will never get the efficiency the outdoor unit is rated for. The higher the SEER rating the less you will pay for electicity.

X2 on Goodman. Go for a better unit if you can afford it. I'd pick a Carrier over a Goodman! I have Trane as well. We spec York, Trane, Carrier, McQuay

Thanks for the heads up on Goodman. The guy that was here on Thursday said they are not selling Trane, (and a few others) because they were bought by some investment firm & quality went to pot & were being sued by some class action law suit.

Is he filling me with BS to sell me a cheap unit for big $$?

Yes he is full of it. Trane probably won't sell to him. They tend to deal with only quality contractors-they don't want their reputation tarnished. Class action suit? That's news to me, I've been a Trane dealer for 15+ years & that's the 1st I've heard about it. As far as quality, Trane is the top of the line stuff. Other manufacturers tend to follow in their foot steps with technology & design.

for 7600 you should be able to get a better unit...like a Trane. Ditto on shopping around.
