This is a rendering of how the build will look incl. some "artistic freedom". Not sure if we shave driprails and door handles yet (budget!).
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/05/zvthansMustangfrproof4_med-1.jpg

GT2 is for "Gran Tourismo" (in the italian original sense) and Turbo. Some highlights of the parts list, not all parts are final yet as we're only about half way through the shopping:

Ford SB 363 stroker, World Products block, all forged & hyd. roller, 0 balance, Diamond pistons
Single turbo T-76, intercooler
Big Stuff 3 ECU
BBK SSI-R intake
T-56 trans from Pro Motion, McLeod RXT clutch, hydraulic
AJE front coil over struts w/adjustable A-arms, improved roadrace K-member, double adj. Koni's, manual rack & pinion
13" Cobra brakes, 4-piston Brembo calipers
FAB9 9" rear & TrueTrac, TCP leaf spring kit, adj. Varishocks
TCP torque arm & Panhard bar
11.65" Cobra brakes rear
18" Shelby CS56 wheels
Toyo R888 rubber, 265/35 and 315/30
Speedhut gauges
69 Deluxe interior, black
ProCar leather seats
Rollcage & Simpson harness

To answer some obvious questions right of the bat:
Front suspension: why struts and not UCA / LCA and strut rods? To make room and save weight up front. The AJE front K-member and A-arm setup will save a LOT of weight and make it possible to shave the shock towers to make room for the turbo install. Down under RRS is doing good on the track with strut suspension for Mustangs.
Rear suspension: TCP gBar and EvM 3-link is all the rage for Mustangs so why leaf springs? To be different and to show that it can work! This is a 50/50 street and road race build and the leafs, torque arm and panhard will do a great job if suspension travel is kept small.
Brakes: why no Wilwood 6-piston? Kill or overkill? It's not about bragging rights but selecting the right hammer for the job. Also there IS a budget! ;)

Builder is CPR Streetmachines, engine by Total Performance (of recent Obsidian fame). Both in San Diego.

I'll keep the updates coming, right now it's just a very nice rust free primered shell while we wait for the suspension parts and work on the engine.

I don't know about shaving the drip rails the quarter windows on the 69 stangs are pretty inset and don't look real clean with out the trim. I am really looking forward to watching this build as I am doing a 69 fastback but with more of a pro street look.

Ohh and you have the same two tone idea that my dad and I have, but we are talking about doing a silver and carbon fiber two tone.

Just a quick shot of the car out of the shop. Don't mind the wheels, they're just for rolling around (for sale btw). Waiting for the AJE front suspension, will probably do the 8pt roll-bar in the meantime.

Wow your car is so much cleaner then mine, we are having to replace both quarters, two full door shells, tail panel, and both valance panels.... Wanna trade lol.

I'll be watching this as well... very exciting stuff. BTW, mach1stang, don't feel too bad... I had to do both front shock towers, full floors, front and rear torque boxes, a pillars, trunk floor, taillight panel, both rear quarters, inner and outer wheel housings, new hood, rear valence, and some odd patches. I got a steal and paid a local Mustang restoration shop (does MCA Gold show cars and all) $4500 for all the work. It helps to pay cash!

Ha, the shot above is AFTER! This one had a lot of new metal as well. Rear qtrs, inner wheelwell, floors, rear valance, tailpanel and what not. Completely clean now though.

That makes feel alittle better, but I did not list all the other stuff we are re-doing, all new floors, new firewall, new cage, and I know there is alot more. Any ways it is really cool that the 69 and 70 mustangs are starting to get some more attention, it seemed to be nothing but 67 and 68 stangs because of the elanore look.

Zee finished the rear rendering!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2008/06/zvthansMustangrearfinal1280-1.jpg

The centered exhaust is a challenge but we're splitting the tank partly to get it up there. Tank is getting baffles and dual sumps as well. The exhaust will be a single 3" from the downpipe and then split into 2*2½" under the tank.

Not much progress on actual car but a lot of parts are on the way. T-56 tranny, McLeod clutch, flywheel, hydr. throwout bearing etc. is coming next week from Pro Motion Powertrain. The AJE front coil over setup should be ready the week after and I was in San Diego over the weekend to talk to CPR Streetmachines about a zillion details and go over the engine with Total Performance. Opting for tool steel rings amongst other details.

Been a while since I posted but it's moving along. Most of the parts are now in, long wait for some of it as usual...

Making room up front. It's a 8.2" deck 363 DART stroker but still nice with more room for the headers to go forward and meet the turbo. The donor car was actually very nice as can be seen, not much to clean up and the driveline (420W w/Toploader) has been transplanted into another coupe of mine.

Engine is starting to come together. DART block with 4.125 bore, 8.2" deck. Diamond pistons, Eagle forged stroker kit, CamMotion custom solid roller turbo cam with low duration, good lift, 114° lobe separation. Vic Jr heads are getting a mild port job + matching.

Progress pics! This time the 363 long block and T-56 tranny being test fitted. Had a fault in the World block casting and one ear broke off with very low torque on the tranny-to-block bolt! Welded back in place, NP warranty by Total Performance.

Also have the subframe connectors welded into the floors. Once connected to the 8 point roll bar this is going to be VERY stiff! :woot:

this is gonna be 1 cool car once its finished, love the ideas that are going into this thing..

that AJE K-Member , is that specially for a 69-70 Mustang, or is it for a foxbody or SN-95 or something like that?

once i had a brainwave thinking about the same thing..

just throw a K-member from a SN_95 under there with the struts..

Got the rear wheels back from Vaughns Machine in LA, widened from the standard S197 9.5" to 11". Really nice work and very little weight needed to balance it out. Looks good on there too (ride height not set in these pics).

Great thread, I've been watching enthusiasically. I like the relocated rear spoiler. Not only because it "might actually do some good" but because it's a subtle change that makes the car look different, but someone might not realize why.

Did you make your subframe connectors? If so, out of what?

CptKlutz
12-10-2008, 11:00 AM
Jaybee, thats my style too. Stylish and subtle, true to the original.

The subframe is just cut from 1.5 x 2.5" .120 wall", welded shut with a plate in the ends.

I finished the main gauge section of the cluster. Took the original lenses out alltogether as I need access to buttons on the gauge faces. Gauges are Speedhut Revolution and they fit PERFECT! They are screwed in but also sealed with a thin bead of clear silicone to keep them from vibrating loose. The aluminum plate shown was drilled after the pics were taken and mounted to the back of the cluster with 5 screws:

Working on the turbo setup and the carbon parts, both takes a loooong time before it looks like anything at all.

Engine is back in and moved way back and down, no issues clearing the hood:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/th_2009_0106_081008-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0106_081008.jpg) https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/th_2009_0106_080956-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0106_080956.jpg)

Turbo placement is done and the helper bracket taking most of its weight is in, 5" DP being mocked up:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/th_2009_0106_085550-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0106_085550.jpg) https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/th_2009_0106_101543-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0106_101543.jpg) https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/01/th_2009_0108_082429-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0108_082429.jpg)
Next is the hot side with each header going all the way to the T6 flange (no merge).

I'll post some pics of the carbon work in a couple of days, it's all work 1-2 hours, wait 12 hrs to dry/harden/cure. :injured:

So to get some instant results I mounted my Oregon Scientific actioncam on my helmet. Simple click on off mount that comes in the camera kit, now epoxy/glassed to the helmet. Needs a bit of finish + some black sealer:

Downpipe or drainpipe, not sure any more... :)

Rear tires are 315's and needed a little more room at the front. They just clear the leaf springs and rolled fender lip without pulling the fender out. 295 usually fit a 69-70 with no issues besides a little hammering.

With single turbos your trying to run both side of the exhuast through one tube. On my mustang with twins on a big block we will run dual 4.5 to 5 inch all the back no mufflers no nothing.

cantvalve16

When you say that you roll the fenders around a 5/16 tube, how exactly is that done?

It seems like you would cut and flare the fender to desired shape, then put the tube on the backside of the fender lip and weld it on. Is that right?

CptKlutz
01-20-2009, 12:33 PM
mach1stang: one 5" should take all the exhaust I can flow. The turbine takes a lot of heat from the exhaust so the volume a bit down the DP is lower than in a normal header/collector. It's stepped down even more & split into 2 when it passes the rack/swaybar.

cantvalve16: the rod is bent into shape so it can be placed into the original L bend of the lip on the inside of the fender, following the rounding all the way, then the lip is hammered up around the rod. With a little care the shape/contour of the opening remains the same and the lip is now nice and round and probably even stiffer than original though its just 5/16+ thick. Plenty of Bodysafe or sealer of course to prevent rust later on.
Sorry for my lacking english, hope you get the drift of it?!

LOL no the "drainpipe" comment is just related to the DP size. That thing is BIG! And I wont idle a spanking new, over rich engine for long periods like Larry & Co did. That just begs for oil to blow out the compressor side seals. :) Seems they did have a bearing issue after all though?

More pictures! Right side header all in one piece. Just need some detailing, wastegate flange etc. Nice with the notched towers!

I picked up the quarter emblems from the laser shop today! I dislike the original Mach I emblems so we tossed ideas around and came up with these. I made a set of 3½" slightly domed aluminum emblems, sanded them for an age with 800 grit, had them anodized and then laser "milled" 0.2mm deep with an industrial laser.
Drawing the 2D logo first in Corel Draw and then in 3D (Solidworks) was the worst part and probably took 6 hours... :screwy: You can convert simpler 2D geometries fairly automatically in Solidworks but this came out as more than 3.500 splines and had to be handled area by area...
The emblem will be recessed into the qtr panel.

Some fresh pics of the cold-side all mocked up. We decided to keep it cool and out in the fresh air. If this was a drag car we'd stay in the engine bay but give it 30 mins on the track and it'll be all heat-soaked under there.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/th_2009_0228_1-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0228_1.jpg) https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/03/th_2009_0228_2-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0228_2.jpg)

Gotta love those Brembos too. :smoke:
The underside is also (re-) finished. The torque arm tube stayed but we redid the rest - one of those days where you just have to admit you made a wrong turn. Now it has a very unique way of cross bracing and providing monster torsional rigidity.

Meanwhile I'm busy on the carbon parts. Here the hood scoop being molded as a positive layup instead of a mold. I was trying to save time and this is the first time I've done it with clear carbon and no gelcoat. Jeez, the hours spent on clearcoating and sanding that thing! Neither can I! :machine:

The grille is bent from a sheet from customcargrilles.com, pattern is called XXL Hexagon and we're going to powdercoat it black. I made a 2D drawing to work from if anyone needs it, but basically you bend over the original plastic piece.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/05/th_2009_0507_203046-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0507_203046.jpg)

I was worried about heat soak under the hood and also wanted to reduce front lift even more, so Dustin at CPR and Bob from SoCal Paintworks made some inverted louvers in the hood. A real pain as its all double layer under there and any heat makes it warp. Cant press directly into the hood but needed to weld in a separate piece. Came out great after some bending back in shape!

So, here the latest update on the build. Holidays and other stuff has been in the way but its finally getting color. Finished the hood louvres - what a warping pain! Got Bob from SoCal Paintworks to fix it, he knows all the tricks.
Also the grille is finished and ready for powdercoat:

I/C, tubing & hangers finished:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/07/th_2009_0527_210411-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0527_210411.jpg) https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2009/07/th_2009_0527_210438-1.jpg (http://i300.photobucket.com/albums/nn20/cphsonic/1969%20Mustang%20GT2/2009_0527_210438.jpg)

Also got a little crazy on a last minute detail, a window net. :naughty: Don't give me a hard time on that, I've just always wanted one since I got to drive a real NASCAR. It's bolted in in the pic, but yes there will be a quick release of course.

Color is 2008 Lotus Exige British Racing Green, a really old school BRG without any metallic at all. Really fits the Mustang IMHO. This is shot b4 the clearcoat. It will get a 1/4" white pinstripe as separation between the green & black, inspired by the George Folmer Trans Am car.

Here a little add on to the front spoiler, just mocked up real quick on my other 69. The GT2 will have special mounts for it so it can be removed when I want to look more "historically correct" I made it from an 8mm Airex foam core and 3 layers of CF. Not too pretty as its a wear part on the track anyway.

CptKlutz

OK, I know this is long overdue so here finally a few updates.
Hard for me to say on the AJE kits in general. Mine was very nice to begin with and now it's been modded and reinforced quite a bit and repainted. CPR Streetmachines have done quite a few builds with them so you'd be better off calling them for a review.

Engine dropped in, looks tiny all by itself down there but just wait until it meets all the turbo piping... :smoke: Also the breather can is in. Right now it's moved "outside" for a cleaner look and easy access but might move back in, let's see.

Just came back from CA, brought over the CF spoilers and helped a bit on wiring the beast. The project has been on a bit of hold awaiting all the interesting changes the EU has made to import customs and VAT on classic cars. For a while it has been uncertain whether I'd be able to bring it in (more than $20k added in taxes) but there is hope at the end of the tunnel it seems.
And before anyone comments: that is NOT the right steering wheel! Missing an adaptor ring for the quick release that will take a Grant woody or a suede Momo.

One of my favorite builds on the site. Even though you've already sourced a killer-looking set of wheels, I can't help but imagine this car with one of the new 8-spoke Minilite wheel designs like the NewGen Lite.

Niel, I'm definitely a big fan of minilites. The Shelbys were the closest 18" at the time. Not sure I care for the crome lip on the NewGen though, I'm not into bling at all. :)

Nice build! love the paint scheme, and parts you've upgraded.
It should perform great with the 3-link.

I'm curious, why did you choose 80mm on your turbo size?

and I'd vote for the Momo wheel.

Looks great & keep the updates coming :)

No news in a while.

In short the recent changes to our EU import taxation, inspection and registration of classic and modified cars, means that the GT2 has now become to expensive (for me) to import and register in Denmark. So here it comes... :banghead:

Ultimate pro-touring Mustang FOR SALE

The project stands as shown in the latest progress update. It basically just needs finishing of the electricals (at ~90%), assembly of interior, doors, rubber & glass, body panels, some exhaust and then dial-in. All the nice, custom and expensive stuff is there and waiting, so you are looking at minor parts + labor. CPR Streetmachines have done the build and will want to finish it. They are one of the best shops I have ever worked with and are knowing, always true to promises and fair in pricing.
This is not a budget build, so be realistic in price expectations. Trades considered (Mustang). PM me if you a serious and want to discuss.

I am sorry to see you have to sell your car. I was looking at the pictures and i would be upset if i was you, that my cars new paint is covered in crap and dust everywhere. It does not look good for the person looking to buy it from you. I am in the market for a 69-70 project (I finished mine last year) I ran across your project and was checking it out. Do you have any new pics of the finished engine compartment? That fan is realy small on the radiator with no shroud and the front down pipe is so close to ever thing even with the wrap it will melt every thing in its way. I have had and raced a bunch of turbo cars that stuff gets mighty hot after a few miles. I would have that shop redo the exhaust so the new owner will not have to deal with melting issue, exhaust wrap will not fix the heat issues, just an idea no need to pay for a job twice. What is the name of the shop doing the build and do they have any previous builds under their belt? I will keep looking at this project I may be interseted if the problems are fixed.

Hey all and merry christmas! The Mustang is still for sale (in the US) but after being on hold for almost a year now it's being finished at CPR. Hope to get it on the street (and track!) for spring.
Buy it now at way less than parts cost or pay the going rate for a turnkey, dialed-in trackday monster. https://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.php?67491-1969-Turbo-Mustang-Fastback-P-T

Hey, what are the rules om importing vintage cars in Denmark. Here in Norway we have the 30 year rule. So you (only) pay the 25% VAT on 30 year old cars.. But getting plates on a modifyed car might not be as easy..

What shop is the car at in Esco.? My car isn't too far away from there, in Santee. I'm interested in shop rates and if the shop communicates well. The guy that is doing my axle shortening is not very good at communicating at all!

@jvike: 35 years and then import tax and 25% VAT. Main problem is that it has become impossible to register as 35 yrs old with all the mods. New inspection rules mean it will NOT classify as a classic but will be hit will full car tax (180%)!

@go-fish: Car was actually done in Santee until 4 weeks ago. Moved it from CPR Streetmachines to Best Of Show Coachworks. I highly recommend CPR for smaller mods (like your axle work). Just Google them and say hi to Dustin from me.

WOW killer Mustang!! I am happy rules are not so bad here compared to Denmark (allthough the taxes here are also hammering on our build budgets)

isn't it possible to register in another EU country and then import? Here a car from another EU country has to be registered, can not be denied or taxed extra.

Initial setup on the dyno is now done, playing it safe with 10 psi tops until it's all broken in and set up. Tune is for maximum driveability and fun, not bragging rights. Later we'll likely go to around 15 psi.
