I ran 12.40 at 109 with the street tires, going to try slicks this year. When I re-did the interior, i had the factory am radio converted to am/fm with Ipod control and I put second skin deadner in and now I can cruise and hear my tunes. Thanks for the compliments guys, I been working on this car for 8 years and its finally what I wanted. Hopefully I can get it in a magazine, at least a small write up.

Thanks for all the compliments guys! Those are original factory bucket seats that I just had redone, I was going to get racing seats but I just couldn't do it. Andrew I'm running the 7/8 master and it works good but I think the stroke is a little long but very easy to push and the car will stop quick, I still haven't been able to lock them up though. Another thing is I think with a small bore master like that pad knock back is worse, because the fluid pushes back easier with the smaller piston.

Hey if its working great don't mess with it! Although I'm not bashing the master either, my brakes work very well I think its hard to get everything out of a manual single master system. PT goat I think my height is around 3"-4" I'll check though.

Looks really nice Frank, I love the 'post' coupe. Interesting how it doesn't have the vents on either end of the dashboard (like the hardtop does). I suppose that is what the draft-vents are for 8^)
The duck-tail spoiler looks very good on that combo as well.
We need a video of your auto-crossing!

Haven't updated this thread in a long time so heres what happened since and some current pics. I've autocrossed the car a few times, now hoping to go to limerock someday. For now I'm working out the bugs and driving the car. I have added some double adjustable shocks, lowered the rear 2", converted to a stick (Currently a richmond 5 speed overdrive, blew the 6 speed 3 times.) Sold my race seats and belts and gear vendors. Took the money and bought new rims and tires, put the stock seats in and re-did my dash. Also I hunted down a 69 gto factory tach and put a formula wheel on. Next plan is a 9" full floater, 3.75 gear alum center, tru-trac. I'm thinking this rear will fix two problems, one my pinion angle, a 9" lowers the pinion compared to a 10 bolt, two my pad knock back problem. Also the upside is this rear end should last a long time. Anyway here's some pics. I'll get some interior pics later.

Thanks Frank. I want to run a 275 tire on the front of my GTO, but my current wheels are too narrow. I think I can get a new inner hoop and make my wheels 9 inches wide in the front with 5.5" backspacing. Your car is looking great!

Thanks! What a difference on my fronts compared to the 255 nitto I had, once you put the 275 on there your gonna say "wow wish I did this sooner" so much more grip now. I know you have plenty of room. My tire measures just shy of 11". My spindles are stock with the willwood 12.9" kit and my mouldings are not trimmed.

Here's some pics of the interior. Currently have the car apart. Trans has been to and from richmond, rebuilding the motor, valve seats were shot, cracked piston and blown rings. On the list for upgrades are bigger cam, intake, hydraulic clutch, new pulleys, driveshaft and floating 9". https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/12/92911012-1.jpg

Frank,
Nicely done. I am looking at the pictures of the dash and noticed that your dash doesn't have any vents facing the driver on the extreme left and right edges of the dash. Did Le Mans's not have those vents and the GTOs did? Anyone else know?
Andrew
ponchopwr70
12-15-2011, 05:43 AM
Not sure but I do see gto's with the vent and some leman's. My car is pretty odd, it was an 250 straight 6 car with a powerglide, post sport model, bucket seats, no dash vents and a wide rear seat like a 68 gto. Its almost as if they took all the left over parts and made my car. Anyways not really sure on the dash.

Here's some pics of the engine freshened up and hydrualic clutch, next step id ford 9" full floater with 3.90's and new driveshaft. Good progress Frank. I was just looking at the picture of the TOB assembly and it looks like the bearing is touching the clutch fingers. Did you set-up the bearing with some gap?
Andrew
ponchopwr70
02-07-2012, 10:51 AM
Andrew it does look that way in the picture, but there is a gap. Based on my measurements I have .150 distance with no spacers, which is a little tight. I believe they want arount .180 so I'm hoping I'll be ok with this. I'm running the kiesler master set-up bot have not bleed the system. I do know that in rest position my brake pedal and clutch sit at the same hieght. Did you have to make a pedal stop?

.150" is a little tight, but you should be OK. I would inspect it a couple of times per year just to make sure. Also pay attention to the pedal feel. If you find that the free-play at the top of the pedal travel seems to be going away, then that is a sign that the gap is closing due to disk wear.
I do not have a pedal stop, but I highly recommend that you make one. I learned this lesson the hard way when I over-traveled the bearing and cut a seal. I documented my experience in my build thread.
What size MC are you using?
Andrew
ponchopwr70
02-07-2012, 11:16 AM
I just went to quater master's website and they are saying .100-.150 but my paper work seemed to suggest they wanted it to be .180 wierd. I went with the 3/4 master because thats what they recommend and second because there should be a little more effort than the .70 master. I'll make a stop befor I even bleed the system.

The difference between .150" and .180 is less than 1/32". I guarantee that the measurement error is probably more than that...LOL Also keep in mind that those are guidelines for racing vehicles and that different clutches will exhibit different characteristics as they wear. Bottom line is that you want to give some room for the spring fingers to move as the clutch wears.
QMI recommends a .750" MC, but they base that on 1" of MC travel. The Keisler kit uses a Gurling style MC that has 1.4" of travel, so be very careful that you don't puke the bearing. You may have to play around with the rod length and the pedal stop to make sure that you don't have excessive TOB travel. I chose to limit TOB travel by using a smaller bore MC which also gave me a lighter pedal feel. As they say, "your mileage will vary."

Thanks for the info, I'm going to limit my master travel to 1" by using a pedal stop then, only because it wont cost me anything to try. I'll report back how that works, I should be able to tackle that this week sometime.

So reporting back on my TO bearing, first off I know why you changed your master, my pedal effort is stiff! Thats ok though I'll live with it, also I did not need to make a pedal stop the factory plastic carpet hold down takes care of that for me. I ended up adjusting the rod for the master to get to the final pedal postion. My pedal in rest position is a little closer to the floor than my brake pedal and is a short throw but I kind of like it. I still may need a final adjustment when my car is running but all in all I belive this system will work.

I didn't think I needed a pedal stop either, until I went to the track. With adrenalin pumping at the starting line I stabbed the clutch just a hair harder than I normally do and that was it, the TOB piston traveled just a hair further and cut the seal as it compressed. But you may be OK. I am just relaying what happened to me...
Isn't the hydraulic setup smooth?

The photos listed in the original post (photobucket) are no longer working. Are the original photos available elsewhere, and if not, would you mind re-upping them (Flickr, or elsewhere...?)

I want to go to a 275 front tire, but my wheels are only 8" wide. I am trying to figure out if I can swap one side of my wheel hoops to widen them slightly.

front is 5-5/8 rear 6-1/4. With my alignment I do belive my rears may fit on the front but not 100 percent sure.
I was reading through earlier today, so I happened to see this. My brother is thinking of getting a '70, so I was looking here....

Great car! I really like the green - very subtle!
What kind of paint did you use for the gas tank?

Hey guys sorry I been busy and haven't realized I had some questions here, first the air dam came from Ames, Andrew the fronts are a 5-5/8 bs, the gas tank paint is bullet liner it's sprayed on hot like bed liner. As for the car she is on blocks, I blew the pressure plate a month ago so I have a new clutch and some other little things to do. Painted the exhaust cast iron color while I had everything apart also. That's about all for now. I did pick up a 72 gto 400 short block from my girls uncle for free! Piecing that together now so possible 406-467 build, also scored a Holley street dominator intake from a friend. Here's a YouTube vid of the lemans when she was running. Also I had some trans problems that I cured by rebuilding myself and used 80/90 gear oil. Do not run synchromesh in a Richmond it will grind and kill your syncros.

Bought them from team 3 wheels, check my thread from a few years ago when I bought them, I had some problems with them.

Hey Frank,
Your stance is really great. How far is it from the ground to the top of the wheel well arch?
I just got my front wheels widened and I ended up with 6.5" of backspacing. It rubs the sway bar a little, but I don't care. Honestly, I think if I widened the wheel towards the outside some more, I could run a 295/35 tire on the front.

I can't take measurements right now because the car is up on blocks, if I remember correctly it is 24" front 25" rear. I just lowered the back and had exactally 1" or rake. I agree on the 295 in front, I think my rears will fit on the front with my alignment right now.

Frank,
I am pretty sure that your rears will fit in the front. There will probably be some light contact with the sway bar at full lock, but otherwise it should work. I would love to see you do what and post up some pictures and a report of how it all fits.
Your car definitely sits lower than mine. Does it bottom out in the rear when hitting big bumps?

No it does not bottom out, I have bumpstops on my shocks and that's it, no other bumpstops or pinion snubber. They only issue I have is my collector flange and blow shield flange do have scrapes from speed bumps. I did have a problem with my rear sway bar brackets hitting the exhaust where they go over the axel, I ended up make shorter aluminum hangers for my exhaust and now there is no play in my Exhaust. Im hoping to try switching the wheels to see if they fit once I get the car back together. Right now full lock my front rims on the inside will just touch my lower control arms but not my sway bar.

My front steering angle is limited somewhat by the inner tierods hitting the oil pan, otherwise I might have the same problem with the wheels hitting the control arms.
Are you running these springs in the rear:

Yes those are the ones, with double adjustable afco shock. You may need a shorter shock with those springs.

No idea, only real weight difference from stock would be that the frame is boxed.

Hello,
Got a quick question if you don't mind. I notice your Lemans has post windows with a metal frame for the window. I didn't know any of these cars had that. Do you get any wind noise? I've been wondering if there might be a way for me to do that so I can get rid of my wind noise in my car. Just curious if yours came that way or did you change it to that? BTW: GREAT LEMANS!

My car is factory, all the post cars came with the vent windows. I get wind noise when they are closed. Thanks for the compliment.

The first pic is the rear and the second is the front. Those measurements are from the ground up, rear measurement is 24-1/2 and the front is 23-3/4, also the headers have a little over 3" clearance.

It’s been awhile! It’s late and I’m getting back into another engine build. Not sure what to build, big cube sbc, bbc or a Pontiac. The 388 stroker finally dies after 12 years of 7200rpm. Currently the lemans is in Viking front coilovers, I installed a tkx 2 years ago and have been enjoying the car every summer. I’m going to post some pics so you guys can see how she’s holding up.

Is that black piece an aftermarket add on? Factory floor shift bump cut from a full floor pan?
I ask because years ago when I 5 speed swapped my Cutlass I was rather crude with the hole I cut for the shifter. I'd like to enlarge the hole, clean it up, and then reinstall a plate/hump similar to what you have.

So that black piece is a repro hump for a floor shift chevelle with a bench seat. Like you when. I put my Richmond 6 speed in years ago I hacked it in. I made this hump fit the floor and used nutserts with 1/4-20 screws. To hold it down. I’m actually impressed it came out that good!

I do feel bad for the abuse I have put this car through! Over the past 25 years that motor has been built 3 times (I think I’m done now) two rear differentials, a th350, gear vendors, Richmond 6, a Richmond 5 speed od, 2 t-10’s and now this tkx. I do have to say that the tkx is the only trans that shifts perfectly over 7000. Richmond transmission are junk those broke all the time. Now that I have everything sorted out it’s time for a 550-600hp motor.

Thanks for the info. Looks like you have the shifter handle centered in the trans tunnel? I do as well.
If I can use that hump and than make a top plate like you did to center the hole, I should be all set.
ponchopwr70
05-03-2025, 04:13 PM
Yup, I kept the shifter handle in the center, that top plate was just a 1/4” thick aluminum plate. Also for carpet I used a 68 floor shift no console carpet and it fit perfectly. If you need more pics of the install just shoot me a message or email and I can send them over. I did have to hammer the hump and tunnel. With a little time I’m sure you will make it work like I did.

I say, build a Pontiac, just because...
But if you decide against it for any reason, a 383 stroker is always a good choice.
