I am going to look at a 1966 Mustang for my brother. I am no expert but it is 10 miles from my house as opposed to 35 for my brother. Does anyone know where these cars a prone to rust. What areas should I pay special attention to. the guy is asking 13,900. What do these cars go for in good condition? Here is the link to the car: http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/car/696049452.html
An info would be appreciated. thanks!!!

From what I've seen you can get notchbacks all day long for around $10k or less. There are a couple here in socal that look comparable to that and they are listed from $8900 - $11500

Rust on an early Mustang? Pretty much anywhere. Worst location to repair is in the cowl ... it can be done, but is extremely labour-intensive.

I know they tend to rust in the cowl area.

Take a flashlight and crawl under the dash and look up at the bottom of the cowl....first thing to go. Second was the front floors, floor front support. The trunk floors and drop offs where they come down to meet the quarter. The tail light panel around the bezels. Corners of the doors...... ect.
That car better not be half azzed for that $$$, I only got $12k for my 68 with a solid body,5.0 HO EFI,5 speed,13" Cobra brakes,18" wheels ect ect........two years ago in a good economy!!!!

for rust...rear frame rails where the shackles hold the leafs..and the trunk floor above that section...and usually the passenger floor boards...the replacement panels are dirt cheap if you can do it yourself though.

lower quarters, cowl, floor pans.trunk drop offs, and wheel wells. that's all i can think of right now.

ya i sold my 66 coupe a few years back wish I never did.. o.g. arizona car still had the licence plate from from the dealer in scottsdale when I purchased it. The guy the purchased it from me said when they tore it apart to paint it they found NO rust not even in the cowl.. the bodyshop was amazed.
