Im quite sure this is pretty simple.

In order for me to paint my chevelle grille black, do I need to sand it before I paint? Also what kind of paint do I need to use and how I need to apply it.

also has any body seen the SS emblem painted. The reason Im asking is once I paint the grille black, the emblem and the grille will have no contrast to each other. I was thinking of painting it (the outside lines) red. which matches the car.

thx

From painting my 69 grille, the biggest thing I know is to make sure you get all the wax off it -- those little tiny parts of the grill get spray waxed at the carwash (if you use those) and if you don't get that wax off, the paint won't stick all that well. Not sure yet how to get it off... I guess some wax remover and a toothbrush.

sanding it maybe? and Im thinking about using duplicolor. Man I swear people use that stuff to paint ALMOST EVERYTHING. Interrior (vinly and cloth) wheels, etc dashes gees! lol

so your wanting cheap i take it? use a wax and grease remover first, then sand with 320 or slightly higher, wax and grease remover again, paint. i would highly recomend adhesion promoter on plastic parts first.

Wash the grille with TSP (Trisodiumphosphate) mixed in HOT water. You can get the TSP at any hardware. Use a toothbrush to clean the corners. Scrub the grille with Scotchbrite while you are washing it and you will have 90% of the sanding done. Duplicolor will work just fine for this job. Just make sure it is clean and dry before spraying.
