View Full Version : Aftermarket a/c w/GM-LSx comp = problems?

I looked back through threads (through 12/06) as well as a search & didn't find an answer but I've read about possible compatability issues when using aftermarket a/c (VA, Old Air Products, Classic Auto Air) w/the stock LSx/GM a/c compressor. Is this correct?

I picked-up an 01' truck 6.0/4l80e for my first LS swap & I'm trying to figure out where the accessories will be so I can determine the drivetrains placement within the chassis (68 Chevy truck). If I can use the truck accessory placement it saves me $$ & time. I don't know what a/c system I'll use yet.

Is there a compatability issue?

Frank at Prodigy mentioned this once as well. It has to do with the compressor being variable control versus just on or off. Maybe PM him and see what he can do to help.

Ok. I could have sworn that in the frenzy of info I've read since acquiring the LS motor that I had read that info somewhere but couldn't really find evidence if it was just one manufacturer (Vintage Air) or all aftermarket kits that were problematic.

Of course, VA's solution is to sell you one of their FrontRunner kits. While they do improve the asthetics, the cost outweighs the improved look for just a mild build.

Why not fab up some brackets to mount the VA compressor in the same location as stock?

The stock LS compressors will not work with any of the aftermarket A/C systems as far as I know. I have a Sanden that I use with my Vintage Air system that is mounted low on the passenger side. I have brackets from S&P that mount it to use the small, rear groove on the crank pulley to take some load off my main belt.

I just looked, and it seems that S&P makes an A/C bracket that works with the Truck motor crank pulley spacing. It will bolt a Sanden style compressor in the stock location low on the passenger side. Otherwise, I think you could use the rest of your truck accessories. I don't think the truck accessories are the most pleasing to look at, but should work for you.

I found some other possibilities that I'm looking into now.

If they don't work, I'll have to do as suggested. I've found that when your working w/basic tools in a driveway, making your own bracketry (that's correct & looks good) is easier said than done. Sometimes it's better to ask questions, learn some facts, & see what's available before making the first cut.

I looked around but didn't see anything I thought world work. I'll double check what you've described.
Thanks....

I've read enough to pick up that it has something to do with the Orifice Tube or Expansion Valve setup that's used with the variable displacement compressor but couldn't tell you the details. I'd sure like to know more, though, because some people seem to be making it work just fine.

Has anyone had a stock LS1 compressor go bad? I saw a bunch of variable POA valves on Ebay. Seems those would work well with the LS1 compressor...

i spoke with a vintage air vendor a few weeks ago, and there is a gen 4 kit available for first gen camaros that uses the sanden style compressor that mounts to the stock LS1 compressor brackets. I would think this would be available on their other kits as well. Same price as reg kit.
