Hello,

Will anyone here be going to the Wine Country Classic 30,31 May and 1 June at Infineon Raceway too see the '66-'72 Trans Am cars in action? The 30th -Friday- they kick off with a classic car cruise too multiple wineries, lunch, photos, and cap it off with 3-4 laps of the track. I am planning on taking the Camaro for this and watch the T/A cars run on Saturday. Anyone else going? If we can get 30 cars we can get our own parking corral.

I've always been interested in this event. How does it compare to the Monterey Historics?

Much smaller group of cars.

The track is a bit more spectator friendly though. You can't get as close to the track as you can at Laguna, but there are more places where you can see a lot of the track from one location.

IMO the Wine Country Classic is more about the cars and the racing, and the Monterey Hysterics are more for the posing and the scene. Two great events though.

Or move out here and join me, T/Aaron, and Anthony too watch and run your car on the track!

I love the Trans Am races. My old boss used to race (probably still does) T/A, as well as VARA and Historic Stock Car.

I know there is atleast one big race (VARA I think) at Road America. A couple years back my same boss was involved in the big accident that happened at Green Flag. Sad to see so many beautiful cars smashed up like that.

Here's his Camaro.

Better too risk wrecking them than allowing them too rot inside a garage IMHO. They could be rebuilt then and they can be rebuilt now... If it is an old racecar I guarantee the car has been wrecked before. It is completely different than an original never been wrecked street Boss 302, Z-28, or T/A Cuda or Challenger. Also body contact in these vintage events is rare. Wrecks usually occur from mechanical failure or driver error rather than aggressive driving these cars saw in their day.

Watching these guys run there cars at the Wine Country Classic got me to build an old pony car to run at the track, and I am loving every minute of it! Life is too short not too have fun!

I feel a little safer now. I hate Hospitals and figured the HANS was a good way to keep out of them...

Of course there is risk in many of the things that we do in everyday life. The chances of this type of accident happing in vintage racing is slim. The safety crews are extremely cautious. All those tended too in the photos were conscious and alert. As someone who manages risk on a regular basis. If you look at the number of laps run in all the vintage racing events all over the world and the number of severe injuries caused by impacts during vintage races there are plenty of other activities that are much more dangerous. It's not a suicide mission. I was into motorcycling in my past -I still have a CBR 600- and I lost some friends, but a lot more are alive and still enjoying it. IMHO I personally would focus on the fact that vintage racing is a wonderful activity and not limit my life by the what if's. People die driving to work everyday, or slipping in the bath tub. Everyone is different in how they manage risk, or in their perception of danger.

Don't get me wrong. I'm hardly risk averse. It's just that on three different occasions either myself, or a friend has watched one of those "motorcycle crash tapes" and then wrecked on a bike the very next day. Therefore, watching crash video or looking at photos = bad ju-ju.

Pretty much hit the nail on the head there DT...

Although I live here,I enjoy the Sonoma event much more because it is less-attended and much more fan-friendly.Plus,the T/A cars...the stars of the event to us...only run every other year here (they will run in August) whereas they are the featured race every year @ Infineon.
The field can sometimes rival the Historics and often,we see cars there that we do not see here.
Monterey unfortunately has become too political and that really takes the fun out of it...plus they jacked up the gate fees last yr to $85 for Saturday and the group of friends I had from out of town just decided to pass since there were no T/A cars anyway.
I will be @ WC both days and will snap plenty of pics so stay tuned...:twothumbs

Just noticed an exciting difference from last years field. There are four 2.5l and under cars enterd.

Hello All,

I was there yesterday and it was really incredible, as there were 39 Trans Am cars in Saturdays race. It was really fun watching the T/A cars leave two black stripes while swinging the tail exiting turn two. The Thunder and Speed of the Formula 5000's was very impressive as well. They are very quick.

The T/A guys are about the only ones you can shoot there. The rest come flying through there because of gearing and goofy idle circuits.

Wow! You guy's are great photographers! Watching all that great footage DT took...I can't wait to get my car out there on the 28-29 June! I hope Anthony sees the footage of the number 64 Camaro, as it looks a lot like his car. Very cool! I hope Mary can get her car out there for next year's event.

True...quick fuel stops were just as important back in the day as they are today.
Penske even had a pressurized oil line inside the cockpit so that oil could be added during pitstops and the crew wouldn't have to mess with a hot engine compartment. If you look closely at the interior picture I just posted, you can see it attached to the roll bar just to the left of the steering wheel.
Soon after, every team installed a similar unit somewhere on the car.

It's somewhat of a Smokey Yunic thing. The fuel cell size was limited by the rules, but the fuel FILLER was NOT! Extra fuel could be held in the filler, probably another 3 gallons or so.

Jack

Your '74 Javelin is one sweet ride. Those Trans Am AMX's really run well. AMC's used to be popular -back in the day- at the strip around these parts (NorCal Bay Area). There was a famous race at the Wednesday night drags at Fremont Drag Strip where a '68 Javelin beat a Big Block Corvette (we were all in shock). It was the talk of the school for weeks. There were also a load of Rambler SC Scramblers around here too. AMC's are cool IMO.

like 15x7 front 15x8 rears? any idea on tire sizes these guys run?

David Pozzi
06-07-2008, 06:31 PM
The rules required a maximum width of 8" on a 15" wheel. In the later 70's, the rules got very liberal and cars became more like the IMSA cars.

Because Infineon has an NHRA dragstrip, they offer octane as high as 116 which the Pro Stock cars run.I believe that was $9.99/gallon.
I pay $6.28/gal for 110 locally...
