Toyo have a new tyre out in a few selected sizes. I was wondering if anyone had tried them and could comment in comparison to the T1R and R888.

I found the T1R perfect for wet use but the tread blocks too small and compound too soft and prone to overheating on a dry day down a windy road or on track.
The R888 I found excellent once up to temperature both in the dry and (surprisingly) in the wet too (if you have the balls to keep them hot). However when cold (even if dry) they totally lacked grip. That didn't stop me daily driving them though :-) Keeping them up to temperature is just a pleasant challenge.
If you've used the R1R, let us know what you think of them and also if you agree with my summation of the two tyres it supposedly lies between.

Fred,
Are you a tire engineer at TOYO? If so I would like more technical information on the R888's for track use. I need a tire that can handle a lot of heat without chunking. I was thinking of trying these tires.

Grassrootsmotorsports just recently reviewed them, they apparently out perform the reknowned bridgestone re-01's, but are less predictable at the limit.

LOL, no, not at all.

They are just "cheap and good" which suits me. I found them on some GT3 porsches at the Nurburgring the other day too, so I guess I'm not alone in liking them. My experience is favourable, and a lot of other people like/use them too.

Explain what you mean by chunking? What does your weapon of choice weigh? How much tyre width do you have/use? Overheating is best fixed by use of more tyre width in my highly limited experience. Obviously if it's a heavy beast and they are already wide that could be an issue though.

The vehicles I've seen them used on range from probably about 600kg to 1500kg. If you are inside that range and have sufficient width, probably worth a look for the price.

I also used the Dunlop D01J which I found very similar, but it cost 1.5x as much! :

Thanks. I have faith that the compound is a good one. The Tread shape pretty much defines how well it will hold up on track without wearing excessively (They should last maybe 200 - 300 miles with hard use I guess). What I'm mainly looking to find out is how they peform cold and/or wet. The R888 on the street in the wet is pretty much useless and is equally useless fresh out of the carpark when cold even if dry too. Once there is heat in them though... :-) Lovely.
If the R1R can perform like a T1R in the cold/wet and close to an R888 in the dry... I'll be sold on them for sure.
Fred.
