View Full Version : Surprise of the weekend at YOE!

I went to the Year One Event this weekend and was scheduled for the afternoon hot lap session on Friday. I didn't realize it or figure it out until I got home but I met one of our members here, HectorM52. He showed up for the hot lap session with his silver S10 truck, really nice guy and I enjoyed meeting you Adam along with your friend. To get back to the story, when Adam showed up on the paddock a lot of the other drivers were either snickering or had a puzzled look as to why someone would bring an S10 to a road course, even though it was sporting an LT1 and T56 with C4 vette brakes and 4th gen Camaro wheels. I myself was a little skeptical but curious to see what would happen. Let me tell you, when we came back in to the paddock after the first session nobody was laughing anymore. The little truck sticks like glue and Adam could really drive it, even the Skip Barber racing instructors were buzzing about it, it was one of the quickest rides in the afternoon session. We got paired up together for the second session and man what a blast, 135mph and better on the back straight and 120mph on the front straight, this was absolutely the most fun that I have had in a long time, it was as much or more fun watching Adam kick ass with the little truck as it was actually doing the event with him. This is one of those Friday night sleeper rides that would take the money of a lot of so called PT cars. Adam posted video of the second run on you tube, just do a search under S10 road Atlanta and it's in three parts. Adam it was really great meeting you two and hanging out this weekend, sorry I didn't realize the PT connection until later. I hope you come to run through the hills 4 this year and bring the truck because it's a great event also.

First off - a big THANKS for the props. I'm glad it was not as forgettable as I felt it was with all those AWESOME cars out there!!!
And that's pretty crazy about the PT connection! I didn't put two and two together either. I've seen your screen-name on here many times but would have never thought twice - even knowing about the '73 Camaro!!
Anyway, I didn't even realize all the banter about the truck. I guess I was pretty nervous before going out. This is MY first motor (the first one I've built without assistance). And it is making some noises (or maybe I'm paranoid). And it runs on the HOT side. So I was very worried about it. That second session was VERY hard on the truck and it showed with all my erratic driving - I was preoccupied!!
You'll love the videos since you "star" in them! And don't forget to throw some pics my way if your wife got any good ones that I'm in...
You also need to check out this thread - lots of great pics - I believe you made it into one or two...

That's the goal. I need to go search for a thread on that so I can start planning...
Maybe I can sell enough or maybe work enough to get the money I need to get my steering working a little better.
I'm sure some of you heard it; that was NOT a supercharger in there!! It was my PS pump CRYING for me to quit whipping it!!

I had the same problem with power steering pump last year, I called and talked to the guys at performance steering components and used their pump and a cooler and cured the problem. Try www.pscmotorsports.com I think it was around $176 for a ported and flowed P-style pump.

Nope, they're not Caltracs. A friend from another forum custom made them. The overall cost is less than the Caltracs which was a plus for me. Especially since they perform similarly...

Yeah, I was trying to get together with some S10 guys over the weekend. I guess I should "graduate" and hook up with the PT guys instead.
I'm gonna try to make RTTH so you guys will have a chance to see it again - don't worry!!

Tommy, it was great meeting with you and your bud, shootin the stories, and running on the track. I cannot get the permagrin to go away! Your car is the cleanest and best built 2nd gen I have seen, once again, great job!
I plan on being @ RTTH4, riding Adam to get his truck done in time. Wish I lived closer to you all so I could help turn wrenches.
To those that don't know me, I'm the ballast in the Road Atlanta vids and long distance mechanic friend of Adam's.

Kinda off topic of this thred but I thought Cal-Tracs (and similar) designs weren't good for a handling setup. Any changes to them for street, straight line and road course performance?
Were they build using the plans I see on ebay or another method?
I would like to put some on my Nova and remove the old slapper bars.

I think a common misconception is that these types of bars "improve traction." Well, I guess you could say they do...But in my opinion the only thing they do is prevent wheel-hop/axle-wrap/etc... So I guess you could say that when you prevent that then you improve traction inherently. But some seem to think they do for traction exactly what slicks do for traction which is obviously not true.
[I'm not saying YOU think that I just thought I could clarify]
So to answer your question, I guess I have to say "I don't know." The bars were only on the truck for 48 hours before the track event. I didn't have time to adjust them ONCE. I put them on, took them out on the street, and laid some good rubber to make sure I was tracking straight (or close to).
My main goal was to pre-load the right-rear wheel due to my lack of traction on those tight right-handers. And to my dismay I didn't do a good job because all I did on those tight turns was burn off that tire. Which you can hear in the videos if you listen closely...
I'm not sure if I'll ever get a good chance to really adjust them to some sort of "road racing" specs, but I think that is one goal for them.
My REAL goal is to do a 4-link or put a Watts Link back there to REALLY get some road-racing traits back there. But that's WAAAY off in the future. I'm poor.

I doubt it - I'm sure the guy "borrowed" the design from Calvert. But I'm not sure.
He could probably build you some bars for the Nova but you might be better off just getting Cal-Tracs since they're off the shelf items and this guy would have to get the design BEFORE making you a production set.

After reading the previous post, do you have limited slip in that diff? That would make a huge improvment when powering out of corners so you don't burn up the inside tire

I do.
It's really a matter of this leaf spring setup not being properly "adjusted" or something. I swear when I used to NOT have the traction bars I didn't have this problem. So I think it's just that the rear is out of alignment...Even though I've had it professionally aligned and supposedly is RIGHT ON.
SaturnVUEguy
07-31-2008, 12:13 PM
I guess it is possible the rear is out of alignment, but I somehow doubt thats the cause. What problem were you having before putting the traction bars on? Did you have a lot of wheel hop? If so, I'd say burning up a tire is an improvement compared to that
HectorM52
07-31-2008, 06:59 PM
Ha ha - yeah, that was the only problem.
I guess burning the tire off is okay...no, wait, not really... DOH!!
SaturnVUEguy
07-31-2008, 07:10 PM
No, burning the tire is not good, but its better than axle hop. Axle hop can be very bad and would more like cause a wreck than 1 spinning tire
Hotwire
08-08-2008, 03:57 AM
I think Adam either needs to rebuild the diff or see if he can change the preload on the springs in the diff. It was spinning really bad on the right handers, but they were deep and due to design all the torque does go to the rear right anyway..
On another note, THE TRUCK MADE IT IN CHEVY HIGH PERFORMANCE!!!! This month's issue, page 54, Year One coverage!
After the track flogging we went back to Adams and thoroughly went over the truck w/ a high speed buffer and supplies, it cleaned up really good. We parked @ the show and walked around the entire time.. CHP photographers got a good shot of it, but either had their heads up their arses or don't know what they're talking about.. See if you can find the error:
It says...
"We love seeing things out of the ordinary. This meager-looking S10 is actually powered by and LS1. It's owned by Adam Moore of Bufford, Georgia, and while it was still in its "construction" stage, he wasn't afraid to make some fast laps on Road Atlanta and we admired his spirt."

I saw that. Strangest looking LS I ever saw, somehow it resembles an LT1 to me, LOL. Don't sweat it, at least Adam's ride is already in print. John Nelson did a 4 1/2 hr. shoot on my car at the 07 Year One event for CHP and it still hasn't come out. What really sucks is no other mag will shoot it after I tell them John did because they don't want a car that's been published before, even though CHP has yet to publish the shoot after 15 months, wtf.
