Anyone bought an Optima battery lately? What is....

The purpose of the plastic cover that comes with it to cover the top posts, that also snaps onto the bottom of the battery?

The top piece holds several plastic adapters that make the battery a "universal" fit. When I installed one in a friends F-150 I had to use two of the plastics adapters to be able to reuse the factory battery hold down. The platics pieces snap in on both of the long sides of the battery in the middle. I think that is what you are asking about.

I forgot to mention that it is a group 34 battery. The above PDF says this:

OPTIMA GROUP 34/78
The optional red or yellow height adapters may be used for installations where a group
24 is required.Place the battery securely on top of the adapter until the clips snap into
place.
