View Full Version : Will 79 fbody rear discs work on 69 Camaro?

Took the rear calipers, brakets, and discs off of a 79 (or so) trans am believing that they would work on my 69 camaro (because somebody told me they would).

Will this work? Will I have to make new caliper mounting brackets? Will the 15" ralleys still fit (and not stick out too far)?

Does anybody know the answer to this?

Thanks in advance!

They suck, but you can use them.

Should grab the mounting brackets off of the rear end too as they would fit the old rear end also.

They will fit ralleys too.

what make the rear brakes from this car so bad?

well, just a few things:
they are prone to leaking.....
hanging up.......
parking brake never adjusts right.....
seals will almost always suck air....
parts are getting scarse....
cast iron....
heavy...
I hear a puppy gets killer every time they are applied. LOL

Back in the day we used them alot and they can get trouble some. I can't remember how many I have rebuilt or replaced. I guess they are not as bad as the early Corvette 4 piston ones.

With the brakes available now days, you can do so much better.
If anything the 93-97 Camaro style are easier to work with. Thats if you need them to fit under 15" rims.

I'll disagree they leak. I've had them on my 78 TA for over 20 years and never had one leak. It's never had an E brake issues but it has silicon fluid(and a good pedal feel too). My 81 TA I've had for 8 years not a leak. A similar caliper was used on some Caddilacs.

They do however have issues with the ratcheting emergency brake mechanism and often have to be replaced for that reason. That keeps the pads closer to the rotor so if it is not working they have too much travel taking more pedal travel.

You can use front calipers from mid 80s Malibus on them if you don't need an E brake.

Wow, holy crap... I forgot to subscribe to my own thread...

Thanks for all of the responses.... Vince, as always...

The car isn't going to be driven hard or often, so as long as they fit and work, I can upgrade later.... Thanks for the answer, that is what I wanted to make sure of before I got balls deep into it....

no problem. Make sure you grab the brackets a rotors cause its a straight bolt on.
You might get lucky, like I said I saw a lot of them with leaks and needing repairs. I ran them on a few cars and well they kept me busy. Always seemed to fail when your out in the boonies.

But keep them maintained...(silicon fluid will help) and they could last.
