Does anyone know for sure if 17 x 8 wheels with 4 1\2 inch backspace will fit on a 55 chevy? The reason I ask is that we had a problem taking off the stock wheels with the tires tight against the quarter panel. Anyone run these on their 55?

Any oversized tire is going to be tough to get on and off on the back of these cars.
As for the backspaceing it is probably close, but your ride height and tire size will make a big difference as well.
On ours we have to unbolt the coilovers and deflate the tires to get them off, this is on a tubbed car.

does it have the original rear end? If not what's the length?

Actually my father use to run a 17x8 with 4.5 backspacing on his 56. Now he has 18x9 and they work perfect. I have a set of Boyd Coddington Magnetos 17x8 that was on the 56 for sale. Wheels and Tires for $950 and in prefect condition.

The stock rear is 60" flange to flange. The quarters are 71" lip to lip. So you can put 5 inches safely to the outside of the flange.
