Going to be needing a 4 dr. sedan for the family and the 1992-19994 500E's below built by Mercedes and Porsche can be picked up fairly reasonably. Like the PT crowd, their owners are fanatics and very helpful which is good. I don't want to debate the merits of the many fine other choices out there right now. Just want to hear from anyone who has experience owning and/or driving them.

If anyone is interested, the link shows one running hard. On the Autobahn, maybe? About 150mph ...sounds nasty.

Agreed!

I don't know enough to make an informed buying decision yet, but I do know they were a huge item back in the day...lot of VIP's owned them, they are rare, and it was when Mercedes still built cars 'to a standard' and not 'to a price'. The ultra rare ones have a 6.0L AMG 4 cammer...normally they have a 5.0L DOHC engine.

I have owned a few "super Benz's" but never one of these. I know a little about them and I think you would be happy with it. I sure wouldn't mind owning one. Just remember that if something does go wrong with it, it will not be inexpensive to fix.

Exactly.

The flip side of that is from what I've read at http://www.500ecstasy.com/forums/
they have the known issues very well sorted out and most cars that become available have really kept up the maintenance to protect their investment.

The exclusivity of these cars is a good thing if the one you buy is from an enthusiast. I was lucky with the last one I owned. The owner wasn't an enthusiast but when I looked at the records on the car it was always dealer maintained. Even if it had a flat tire they would flat bed it to the dealer and have all of the tires replaced. Same goes for a dead battery. They spent a lot of money to always make sure the car was perfect. Buying expensive cars used does have it's advantages.

I read that the prices for a well maintained one with the service records to be around $20K. Low miles is seems to be anything under 100K which obviously isn't that much over 16 years. If they are modified, they sell for less. Like most PT fans, that works for me better-:) I've seen them for $10-15K for a real good driver.
