I find this absolutely amazing. These guys are building a supercar out of WOOD, and it's not what you think. They are not out to prove anything, just to get a good grade on their graduate project.

It looks like they are using a Northstar engine. It looks like they are somehow swapping the intake and the exhaust sides of the heads. They must have swapped the heads from left to right. Interesting.

Rust and termites now on equal footing! Neat build. Anyone know what transaxle that is? I couldn't find it on their site. And yes, reversed Northstar heads!

The bolt pattern looks to be symmetrical so reversing the heads is feasable - the car was interesting enough but this has peaked my interest! I'll flip the heads around on my "junk/spare" Northstar mock-block on Friday and see what happens

I'm pretty sure that's the craziest thing I've ever seen. The whole thing is amazing, but those wooden wheels are nuts!! I was thinking, surely they just made them look like wood... and then I saw the pictures of them making them.

CRAZY!

The site is a bit of a pain to navigate, as info is all over the place, but I saw somewhere they talked about a Porsche transaxle, and in another area they mention a corvette transaxle. I'm sure plans change, so I dont know what they ended up with.

I found it. Some pictures show the inverted 911 box but it was switched out for a Corvette Transaxle to push the engine forward.

Thats the sickest wooden thing I've ever seen. I wish I even had close to half the talent that those guys have....Maybe i would have my car finished by now lol.

I think their design is pretty cool. It would even make a great metal version. The thing that concerns me is sitting between the fron a-arms. Talk about kissing your leggs goodbye in a accident.

I respect thier choice to go against the grain on this car. To branch off in a new direction. To put roots down in a new area..... uh....

lol. Im feeling punny today.

Finally a car who's bite is worse than its BARK! HAR HAR HAR!!!

ok, I'll stop.

It is a neat idea though. I cannot wait to see if it breaks into a million pieces when they fire it up. Should be interesting. I think I'da gone with a little less wild powerplant at first, and see what shakes loose. There are a lot of innovative ideas in there though, and the overall design is awesome. It reminds me of that ford concept a while back.

Not the first modern car made of wood. Frank Costin (brother of Mike Costin, the Cos in Cosworth), an aerodynamicist who worked for deHavillands, designed three wooden frame cars that were produced. He was influenced by the Mosqito fighter bomber build by deHavillands during WW2. He designed and delivered a car known as the Nathan Racer (a sports racing car) to some guy named Nathan in the Bay area; In conjunction with Jem Marsh designed and produced the Marcos (the first couple years were wood frames- changed to steel to try to meet crash standards); and the Amigo, which at one point was the lowest car ever produced. He added a periscope rear-view mirror so other cars could see him.)
