Pro-touring definition

Not exactly new to this site, but just wondering what the definition of Pro-Touring is. I originaly thought it was a muscle car that handled well with some modern day improvements. After reading a lot of posts is it something a little more hardcore? I have read a lot of posts "It does not suit our appliction" Just wondering what our appliccation is? No hard feelings. Just wondering if I am building a pro-touring car or just something fun to drive?

Should have searched(My bad). Looks like I am beating a dead horse! Your post answered most my questions. Still wondering why some things don't meet our application?(heidts,tci,ect) Still seems like somewhat of an improvement. Albeit small. (Even though I did not choose this road.)
