How do you produce this kinds of welds.I have 304SS tubing. We want this look on our exhaust tubing.I know its tig welded, what filler rod is used.I had some exhaust welded and its not even close to the way this looks.I was pretty good at tig welding in mild steel, never tried stainless and I sold my welder.I rather weld it myself, anybody out there selling a tig.I havent kept up with the latest models of tid welder ant recommendations.

Go with a 308 filler metal for welding the 304SS. Here's a link to some good information from Miller.

Practice, Practice, and more Practice. If you can TIG mild steel, you can do stainless too.

This is a peice of 4" Sanitary SS tube i made some turn downs from.I used a technique called "walking the cup"Where as you rest the cup of the torch on the tube and make a weaving motion with the torch back and forth. You literally walk the cup of the torch.

If you look close you can see the tracks left by the cup.

IMO stainless is easier than mild steel, requires very little filler as well.

<shrug> it's all preference. I like tig'ing stainless... I almost don't see the point in tig'ing steel.

But the rod tends to stick in the puddle more on stainless, almost like a magnetic attraction.

I know a guy in our shop that doesn't bother removing the filler rod from the puddle. If he picks up his torch in the middle of a bead, the rod is still stuck in the puddle.

Seems like an awful lot of filler, but it works for him.
