Seeing how my Firebird has about another year before it is done, I picked up a "temporary summer driver" today. :D

...It looks red in the pics, but it is actually hugger orange. The paint is only a few years old, so it is in pretty nice shape. The car over all is "driver quality" and it has new qtrs, a small patch in the trunk, and a small patch in the driver's side floor. I was told it was an LT with a non-matching 350 engine.

Unfortunately, someone blacked out the tail lights and side markers as well as the front and rear window trim and door handles (arrgh). Any recommendations how to fix these?

I am really really really going to try hard not to mess with it too much as the goal is to DRIVE IT not mess with it. :fingersx:

Ya know, on a orange car the black out treatment is acceptable.

And congratulations

Thanks guys, I pick it up Saturday and I am psyched. Building a car is fun, but I have an itch to do some cruising!

I will leave the blackouts for now. You guys are right, I don't think they detract from the look of the car.

Nice car, a bigger air cleaner and detail the engine orange and drive it.

No doubt! I just happen to have a couple brand new air cleaners hanging around. A little spray bomb and I will be ready to cruise! :6gears:

Nice car!

I think you may find it hard to sell it even when the Firebird gets done.

It's always nice to have a fun driver that you haven't put months and months of time and money into.

I would add shoulder belts though if you're going to drive it regularly.

I prefer the term 'sponsor.' So if you would all send me a 'sponsorship' I can make all of these 'improvements!'

Shall I list my PO Box? :lmao:

In my best Homer Simpson voice..."stupid expensive car parts!"

Just drive it, save the $ for the big project.

Looks great as is. Wish I could drive . . . :6gears:

Maybe turn the white letters in though. I've never been a fan. I always think it detracts from whatever wheels are on the car.

Nice temp. I just listed my pics in the garage. mburrow orange 70 had since high school in 75. The more you drive the Camaro, you may change your mind and do this as a project. I've driven mine over 400,000 miles. Enjoy all the threads on your car. Talk later, mark

What a bust! I went back with a trailer and cash to pick it up on Saturday. He wouldn't let me drive it the 1st time I looked at it last week. But I insisted on driving it Sat.

...It has more issues that I am willing to deal with at the moment (I just want to get in and drive for the summer). The whole front suspension needed to be replaced...it steers horrible. All the bushings are gone. It has brake issues, major oil pan leak (possible rotted pan), broken stud, broken speedo cable, starter has an issue, needs new headliner, carpet is trashed, and a few other issues. I know that most of these are minor. However, I also found a major crack in the rear frame rail (the rail is actually split right next to the tank) and the patch panel in the trunk is just welded over the rot where the rear springs attach. It is a very pretty car, but someone just put some nice "lipstick on the pig."

The guy selling it knew what it was and wasn't even upset when I backed out if it. Buyer beware.

So my search continues. I put an offer in on a '68 Camaro yeterday afternoon and I am looking at another '68 this morning as well as hitting a car show. :naughty:

Too bad about the Camaro.Good catch on the frame rail. Sounds like you were smart to back out!
The early 2nd gens. are getting to be old enough that hidden rust is a major concern. Even here in CA; I have seen many rusting away.
If there is enough rust to have rotted the trunk floor, you will more than likely find rust hiding behind the sail panels and under the roof skin too.

The 70 I am working on (CA car) had a perfect trunk floor and still had rust in the upper 1/4's and roof skin to the point that replacement was neccesary. Too bad it was all covered with "new" paint and headliner!
You can probably imagine my disappointment when I started taking it apart. I will be a much smarter buyer next time by insisting to see under the headliner and other hidden areas first. Especially vinyl top cars!

Like you said "BUYER BEWARE"

Good luck with your search! I hope the 68's turn out to be better.

Thanks Mark, I am glad I passed, but was very disappointed. My very 1st car was a '77 Camaro (looked just like Bumblebee from Transformers) that I bought back in 1985, so I was looking forward to 2nd gen ownership again.

Oh well, I am working on a deal on one of the '68s, we will see!

Success!

I finally found another car. I ended up with another Bird:

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/noimg.gif

It's a '68 350-2barrel car, automatic console, with a/c. It has 71,000 original miles and is numbers matching. Almost everything is original except the paint, carpet and headliner.

Not pro-touring, but not bad for a "summer cruiser."

1st change will be a new dual exhaust. :naughty:

Congrats Phil, sounds like a much better buy than the 2nd gen. Was it local? Judging by the palm trees, FL tags and green grass in the photos, I'd guess it's not from NH.

Hey Phil,
You didn't mention this to me in the email this week. Good job man. That's nice.....
Heck, you did the pool for the wife and kids, you deserve this.

Thanks guys, no disrepect to the 2nd gens, but I think I will enjoy the '68. :naughty: It is from FL.

Hey Rich- Thanks, I just "closed the deal" yesterday. And yes, I am going to leverage the pool purchase as much as I can. The new 3-bay garage is next year! :fingersx:
