I have just bought a Tig welder ,but to get the correct mask I need to know what amps to use on welding 30"thou metal or .064 mm as some masks will not darken below 40 amps .
Thanks paul

My mask darkens at 5 amps, but I gotta admit it's not great at that level. Works great for anything above that.

I use an autodarkening jackson and am very happy with it. I have used it to weld very thin sheet metal and have never had a problem with it not darkening.

5 amps on the Miller Digital Elite, Elite and Performance Series Helmets, 20 amps on the Pro-Hobby Series. We use the elite series with the 1/20000 lens speed with a variable delay control.

Don't get an autodarkening one. They give me headaches if i use one for more than an hour.

The Autodarkening lens' are actually 2 LCD's placed on top of each other with the top rotated 90 degrees to bottom. The oscillation of the LCD's is extremely fast with respect to the human brain so you only are exposed to a small fraction of the "picture". 80PROZ - You may be one of the few that can actually see through the oscillation and strain your eyes in the process. Try out a helmet at you local retail welding store as most have a welding area in there facility to set-up and deliver welders.

I don't use an auto darkening helmet for TIG. There's no real need for one.

I agree, auto darkening helmets are for high production situations where speed is an important part of the process. I never use one for tig welding especially if I’m welding on a work bench and have alot of room to work.
Also a word on auto darkening helmets.. you get what you pay for
