I work direct for Siemens PLM Software (Makers of Unigraphics NX, SOlid Edge, Teamcenter.....) and my almost 10 year contract at Delphi in Kokomo, IN will end after April 30th. I have been asked if I was interested in a 12 mo contract in Greenville SC at GE Aircraft engines. ust wondered if anyone live in/near Greenville & what is the area/climate like there through the year.

Scot, I'm sure someone closer will chime in with better info. Greenville is a very nice area and located great for car related activities. Not too far from Charlotte, or Atlanta. Fairly short drive to the beach and mountains. Great temperate climate. Year round hotrodding. Give it a good lookover. You could do much worst.

I live about 2 hrs from there, so not really close but pretty much the same climate etc...
Greenville is pretty cool, close to alot of places that have things going on. Charlotte, Myrtle Beach, Atlanta, etc... Neat thing about this area is within 4 hours you can be at the beach, mountains, rolling plains, country side, you name it. Climate is warm for the most part, winters are mild may snow 1 or 2 times a year no more than a foot total. It can get hot and humid in the summer though.

Greenville area is great! I go to school at Clemson which is about 30 mins away. Climate is amazing if you like warm weather. It is about 75-78 degrees here today. In the winter it only snows and sticks about 1 or 2 times. In the summer it gets up in the 90's and breaks 100 degrees a couple times. Despite what most people think, there are many smart people in south carolina (it is nothing like deliverance), and most people you run into are very nice. Also there is an airport in Greenville which makes travel much easier, that and Atlanta is only about 1.5 hours away. Myrtle Beach is also a good vacationing beach that is only about a 4 hour drive from greenville. PM me if you have any other questions....

That is funny JC: "Despite what most people think, there are many smart people in south carolina"
I am worried my kids will pick up the accent....LOL

LOL... I have a southern drawl... does that make me a redneck? Or is it the cars I like? Or the mullet that I'm working on (trying to grow my hair out and all I can manage is a mullet)?
About the kids... there are some great schools in this area! Clemson is in the top 20 universities in the nation, and everybody thinks that because we have low SAT scores that we are stupid, but that is not it. Every student in SC is given the chance to take the test for free (which is unlike most states), and of course when EVERYBODY takes the test (even the ones who don't plan on going to college, or the ones who have no chance) then the state avg goes way down.
Cost of living is not very high in most areas, but there is so much history in just SC alone. Lots of stuff to do...

Oh yeah I forgot about that. LOL
I grew up in South-East Indiana & when I movied to Central Indiana people thought I was from Alabama. I think my hick draw has worn off some because I make fun of my father for some of the stuff he says that I don't.

You'll like Greenville. Even though it has grown in the past few years there are still some nice spots in the surrounding areas. If you get here, make sure to check out the junkyard a little south of Greenville on I-85. Tons of old cars. You can see it from the Interstate and he puts the nicest ones out front.
I was born in Greenville but live in Charleston which is about 3 hours south/southeast from there. As far as people saying they have heat and humidity where there from, there is nothing to compare when the end of July/August rolls around down here.

I wish the job they told me about was more than 12 months. Like others have said, it is about 1.5 hrs from Road Atlanta.

I live in Greenville, been here 48 years. Seems everyone wants to move here, it's getting to crowded. Personally I wish we weren't so popular, the very reasons people want to come here are being changed because so many are coming here.
BTW, GE uses and spits out engineers by the dozens monthly. Not a very stable place for an engineer although I know a few that have been there awhile.
CMP is a little closer and a more user friendly track than Road Atlanta, less stuff to hit. They also have many more open track days.

We moved to Anderson, SC from middle VA (which we loved) and we are very happy living here. Everything you need is here, and it's car-guy friendly - mild winters and no emissions checks.

It's about 2 hours+ to CMP or Road Atlanta, all depends on which side of Greenville you leave from. It takes me 25-30 minutes just to cross town going to RA. I'll be at RA Friday for the Mitty.
I haven't been to CMP yet, I have several friends that run there. They advised me to take my Firebird there for shakedowns rather than RA. RA has a lot of elevation changes, hard walls and rails where CMP has more run off areas and a flatter track.

Have to agree w/ everyone so far . Most of my wifes side of the family have gone down there for college .(Bob Jones University) So I used to go down there alot . Just remimber that if you want to get somewhere that there is no direct way to get there ! Seriously one of those gps nav things would be a MUST for someone not growing up down there ! But man the roads are alot cooler than Here in the great flat lands .

I live about 45 min south of G-ville. Its nice up there. It is growing. cost of living can be cheap, depends on where you are and how far out. But compared to the NE and CALI its a lot cheaper here.
Weather is nice but it does get warm here in the summer.

wow, lots of south carolinians are here...I am from colorado, but live down the street from JC (cheapthrillz) and go to school about 30 minutes on the other side of greenville, in spartanburg. The more time I spend in this area, the more I like it. I'm planning on going to clemson's International Center for Automotive Resarch for graduate school, then maybe getting a job at BMW. All of which happens to revolve around the greenville-spartanburg area.
We should all meet up or something sometime soon!

I live in Taylors and work in Spartanburg. (BMW) Bubba-Motor-Works has brought a lot of growth to the area, good and bad.
I agree we should all meet up. I'll be at the Cruise-In at the Texas Roadhouse in Taylors Saturday.
