I am about to buy some tires for 17x7 and 17x8 wheels. Can anyone recommend a brand or model to go with, or to stay away from, based on personal experience? These will be summer only tires, as the car will be garaged over the winter. I want good peformance, wet and dry. I also don't want the tires to be the loudest things in the world.

My advice would be to choose a design you like, and then go from there. Do you like the traditional 5-spoke look, or something a bit different? There are plenty of manufacturers out there, with wheels in every budget flavor. Centerline and American Racing make plenty of rims in those sizes that are nice and affordable.

The only thing I can offer you is that I have Continental ExtremeContacts on my '88 Monte SS, and really like them. I'm running 245/45 ZR17s on all 4 corners. They hook fairly well at the track and great on the street. They're also nice and quiet, and very smooth-riding.

I am running Nitto 255/50's and 275/50's on my truck and they are a great tire... Good all around with no complaints on my part...

Thanks, but I have already chosen Boyd's Magneato's for the wheels. I just haven't been through the performance tire selection game in a while, and was wondering who the top runners are now.

Stay away from Kuhmo 712's...Kuhmo makes some good tires, the 712 isn't one of them. Unless you like driving on ice in the rain... :drive2:

Finally! Someone that hates the 712 as much as I do it sounds like! For a cheap tire, go with some other brand. I even like the cheaper (usually) 711 better than the 712's.

My favorite tire has to be the Falken 512's... then the BFG KD/KDW series.

Doh! Misread your first post. Either way, I still vote for the Continentals. :)

Michelin Pilot Sports, Nitto555, or BFG KDW would be my pick :).
