i have a 20x8.5" rim and want to put 275's on it but the tire's approved rim size is 9", can this be done and if so is it going to look funny or do weird things?

I don't really think that the .5" narrower wheel you have in mind would hurt much. You're only pulling the tire section width in .25" per side. I've seen pics on here of guys running a 275 on an 8" rim. I think you'll be okay.

you will be fine, you will just have a slightly larger tire bulge then lets say a 255 or 265.. not really noticable to much tho

so what would be the max before it's too much, would a full inch be ok?

I disagree......especially on a 20" rim. If you are running 15-17" wheels maybe. There is a reason the tire manufacturers recommend certain criteria. Safety is a huge concern especially with tires.:Alchy:

Depends on how much sidewall you have. If you're running "rubber bands" then you can't go much over the suggested. If you have quite a bit of sidewall then you're going to be fine.
