I have a 6 litre motor that came from a GM clearing house. The motor was a "test fire" motor and looks absolutely brand new. You can't even see any sign that it was ever fired. Here is the issue: The heads are 806 casting. According to everything I can find shows them to be '98 LS1 5.7 Perimeter bolt heads - did they even have a 6L in '98? Before it is asked - I know for sure this came directly from GM - it is the only way they get these motors.
How can I determine if this is the LQ4 or LQ9? Is there anyway to determine the year of the block - there doesnt seem to be much identification on it other than the 6.0L stamped in the front? Does this make any sense to anyone? Thanks for your time!

I'm not sure about what the heads are from. I thought all 6.0s had either iron or the 317 aluminums. The best way to find out for sure if its an LQ4 or LQ9 is to pull a head and look for dished pistons and if disheds, it's an LQ4. Maybe you can use a light and check though a spark plug hole.

Those heads didn't come on a 6.0L motor, just the 97-98 Corvette and 98 F-body which had aluminum blocks (LQ4/LQ9 were iron blocks). The 6.0L motors should have a cast "6.0L" or something along those lines on the outside surface of the block.
The 6.0L motors weren't introduced until the '99 year model, and the perimeter bolt heads weren't used after '98 ...

Yep looki on the back side of the block for "6.0L". If its not back there then you have a f-body ls1 it seems. LQ4 and 9's have the big ugly intakes on them.
Get rid of those heads if you want to make any power. Sounds like you have an odd ball. I have no idea how those heads ended up on the engine though. On a 5.7 or a 6.0, those heads are crap.

Says 6.0L on front of block. Only thing we can figure is maybe it was a dyno test engine and they were testing the smaller intake runner on the 6L engine. Why are these heads crap? The specs look virtually identical to later LS1 other than the 200cc runner as opposed to a 210cc, or am I missing something.

The heads are not crap. They just flow a little less than later ls1 heads. They also are inferior to the ls2/ls6 head (only difference between these two is that the ls6 has sodium filled valves and the ls2 is steel). If your on a budget you can use them just fine and upgrade later. Or you can get a set of new ls2 heads for 400 bucks from patriot performance
