View Full Version : Chassis Dyno Question - AMG 6.3 Black Series
My brother in law is pretty much a checkbook hot rod sort of guy. He as had some pretty decent cars but to give you an idea where he is at, he put the battery in his BMW backwords and blew out a good chunk of the electrical system.
Well he has moved on to probably one of the neatest cars I have ever seen, a AMG CLK6.3 Black Series. One of 350 said to come to the US. The run down is 500hp 32V N/A V8 hooked to a 7 speed auto. Electronically limited to 186 mph, 19" wheels and a lot of carbon fiber bits from the factory. The car went to the strip and with about 100 miles on it did a 12.6 @ 108 mph.
He sent it out over the winter to Cali where EVOsport fabricated headers, tweaked the tune on the motor for approx another 90hp. did some suspension work and added carbon fiber wheels. His car served as the prototype for all of the parts they offer for this model and is pictued with the pimp doors and all. I'm looking at the link and noticed the dyno chart is HP over MPH. Most of the chassis dyno sheets that I have seen are HP over RPM. My feeling is without knowing the torque or at what RPM the 90hp occurs, it is hard to say what kind of perfomance increase can be expected. There are some entertaining videos in the link which my favorite is the 200 mph dyno run but I would like to see what you guys think of the MPH vs. RPM. Either way an awesome car. Enjoy:

On the Dyno jet it is basically the same thing. It will use RPM to calculate MPH and or visa versa. Its just about switching the chart display. I believe the new program you can have the MPH/RPM/HP on the same chart. If he saved the dyno run he can easily go back and change the displays.
Some people love to see what the RPM and torque are and some people love to see how fast it is in MPH. Displaying in MPH is a common display to wow the crowds.

Thats pretty cool, not my thing though. Those shifts on the dyno seem pretty violent. Another question I have is that it says it can do 206MPH on the dyno, but can it do it in the real world with real factors such as drag?
I love those cars. AMGs are amazing cars. Nicest car I have ever sat my butt in is my customer's 05 E55. He has 19in HREs on it and oh man is it smooth. Car is silver. It blows the doors off his 95 vette which is modded too. But he loves his vette all the same and won't sell it.

You can do the math if you want to know what the RPM is even if they did not save the pull... the pull is done at 1:1 ratio no shifts...

I love the car! My only concern is driving a car on the street with a rollcage. Not my cup of tea.
I was surprised that he went with the doors as well. Ironically it seems out of place on a car this expensive. I don't think any transmission work was done and I agree, the shifts seem very agressive. I assume it has some type of program that changes the shift harshness according to driving conditions. AMG removes the back seat to save weight so the roll bar (4 point) doesn't really interfere with anything other than adding the weight back on. I believe the ride height shown was more for photo purposes and assume it is adjustable. I haven't seen the car yet in person since the mods but it was pretty slick stock. The car is much bigger than I pictured and I believe he is trying to make it more of a track car. I don't know how much it weighs but it is likey quite a bit more than a 911 GT3 or about the same as a Turbo so I don't know how competitive it will be in that venue. However, it should show nice at the import shows and local parking lots though.

Awesome cars! The CLK DTM is a pretty bad machine too! I got to ride in a E63 AMG in the UK in January. Those 7 speed autos are awesome! Thanks for sharing!

Those are nice cars. 200 mph on a dynojet does not mean the car can do 200 mph on the road. No wind/aerodynamic factor on a dynojet.
Agreed. I have played with some top speed calculators and done some quick research and it looks like the car can do the deed. My brother in law says that he hit 206 between LA and Vegas. The car would absolutely go no faster. He has a tendency to exaggerate but I think this car can back it up. The car had a speed limiter set at 186. Remove the limiter, lower the car, add 90hp and 206 seems plausible.

cool ride...........the AMG engines are definetly powerhouses, and the transmissions are to die for.
bet the car sounds great too......once you get a nice aftermarket exhaust on those AMG V8s they really sound mean........the stock is great but a little quieter than all that power should sound like.
My brother in law isn't the kind of guy to just take it out of the garage to wash and wax this thing. We went to the test n tune at Rt 66 last night. A little bit of a crosswind but otherwise perfect 65-70 degrees and low humidity. Tracked was prepped well. Prior to mods, his best was something like 12.6 around 108. Honestly, seeing that the car was lowered with stiffer springs and 30 series tires, I expected some increase in the mph but possibly a similar or slower ET. His first run was exactly that, a spinning 12.4 @ 115. Next run was an 11.88 followed by a 11.86 and finally a 11.82@118. He has secured some ET streets and I have suggested the traditional stuff like icing the intake and removing the front bar for the next time it's out but for just driving in and not even lowering the tire pressure, I'm pretty impressed. The car builds tremendous speed after 1/2 track. There was a K-tech powered C6 Z06 there that admittedly never got a clean run off but was trapping @ 114 but the ET wasn't even close.
Oh yeah, he has replaced the pimp doors with the factory hinges.

Where in Chicago is this car? I'd love to see it in person
It's in Naperville. I just got off of the phone with him and he is pumped for the drag racing thing now. He doesn't want to compromise the track (road race) performance of the car too much. He is now looking at a carbon fiber drive shaft from PST.
It took the cover and a 5 page article in Modified Luxury and Exotic's magazine last month. Here's a link: http://www.modifiedle.com/issuepreview/archive/issue27/

Zee, tell your bro-in-law that is a badass machine. Not many people would mod an AMG benz like that. Love the wheels and factory flares.
I have a bud with a CL63 that wants to run my Camaro, how do you think I'll fair?
I look at it this way, true, it is an awesome car but there is no losing face getting beat by a car like this. At some level, the improvement is no more impressive than the car itself.
I think he'll be out at Rt 66 in Joliet again once he gets the drag radials on. Next time I know, I'll post up.
Just got off the phone with my brother-in-law. He's got the M/T's and since his carbon fiber driveshaft is not done yet, he had a 75hp spray kit installed. Weather permitting, he'll be at RT66 this Tuesday trying to get a 10 sec quarter.

Woah!
Well, a bit of a let down last night. Sort of. Conditions were very much the same as last time. We bolted up the ET streets and the car couldn't get into the elevens on motor. The tires would hook and bog down the car. MPH was off as well. After letting everything cool down, he launched on the 50hp spray which produced an 11.71 @ 119. We only got one more run off with a 75hp shot which turned out to be the best run of the night. 11.48 @ 121. Not my video but here is the run posted on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Gbk3NA6roQ
The Cobra was pullied, cat's removed and a catback. It's run a best of 11.7 and it looked pretty even from the stands until he missed a gear.
Personally, I'm more impressed with the 11.8 in full street trim than the 11.48 on spray and DOT slicks but hey, as usual, the car drew quite the crowd. I think without some serious compromises, it's about as fast as it is going to get. It's already on a 100 octane tune and get's no tire slip with the ET streets.
Just wanted to update. The AMG got some additional spray and a reflash of the computer and has posted a 11.17 at MIR this fall. I am told MIR is near sea level and the temp was in the lower 40's. I didn't witness the time but others did. Anyway, far more interesting is the car was on the big track at Willow Springs yesterday with some other AMGs. Here is a clip of it doing a flyby on the front straight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOj2_Oo3Qcw
