whitewashing

ok, im looking for an inexpensive way to brighten my concrete block garage. i thought about block fill paint, water-block, etc. just too darn expensive if you ask me. my father suggested whitewashing it, and ive looked up some stuff on the internet and found out how to do it. i'm just wondering if anyone else has done this and how its worked for them, especially on the walls and possibly a concrete floor.
