How is everyone organizing their toolboxes?

I have a bunch of tools and have not done anything to organize them. Just trying to get some ideas. It seams like all the different racks available do not have enough room available for all the sockets.

I have thought about usings some dowel rod and a board to make my own organizer.

Any ideas?

What are you using to organize sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, etc?

There are craftsman racks that are pretty thorough with socket sizes and has spots for 6 and 12 point sockets. You can do shallow or deep with a set. The downsides sre, if you want a set for shallow, and a set for deep, you're using 4 drawers for sockets. Also, they're not portable at all. I switched to Hansen trays. I like that setup better, but it is not a complete range in sizes like you said.

When I worked for a Naval Aviation Depot, back in Florida. They would custom make a storage trays with white open cell foam (sheet size) (can't think of the name of it.) They would use router to make holes for the sockets or other tools.

graycamaro,

I bought some tool box organization stuff from Craftsman a while back and it keeps me from having to hunt for stuff when I need it. I will take a pic after work and post tonight.

Sears sells the grey plastic trays for the SAE and metric sockets. The socket size is printed next to each socket and the letters are raised. I think this is the same one ToxicZ28 was talking about. At some point I will get around to taking a black magic marker and going over the sizes to make it easier to see. Sears also has the plastic dividers to the left of the draw that you just cut to size.

I also got a label maker that I plan to put to use soon too.

Also check out the link below that Steve1968LS2 started about organizing a garage

Thanks for the input everyone.

I think I will make some trays like the Hansen ones mentioned above.

Then I can have places for all my sockets, metric standard, 6 point, 12 point, deep well, etc.

This seems like the best option for someone with alot of tools. Should be fairly cheap. I might even go one further and try and make an organizer for my wrenches and torx and allen sockets.

thanks again.

I used some magnets for sockets. The one in the rear of the box and in the front are the same ones on the Snap-On truck. The others I ordered from Matco. I like them because I can take the entire set out of the box and use them where ever i want and still keep things organized very easly.

These are some sorry ass pictures but you will get the idea. I have had this box set up like this since 1994, its work amazingly well. Easy to keep track of stuff and my kids even put stuff back!!

Are those just big bar magnets or do they have special spots for sockets?

FOD(Foriegn Object Damage) Foam, or something to that effect.

I use something like this in my main box:

I used foam diamond tread floor mats from Sears because they were the cheapest foam I could find. I cut them to fit my drawers and then cut out spots for the tools. I need to redo it and I see Harbor Freight has cheaper floor mats in a pattern I like more than the diamond tread.
