I'm cleaning up the window channel on my car. It had some pitting surface rust. I'm going to sandblast it. Should I use POR-15 over the freshly sandblasted area, or primer etch it first then por-15??? or
who's done what to prevent rust..

I am not an expert, so hopefully some people with more experience will post soon. But I always thought of POR-15 as being great for floor boards or trunks. Areas that get covered up and not really seen. It's also brushed on I think, maybe too thick to spray?

One more good question.

1. If you paint etching primer on bare metal, do you have to scuff
before painting primer at a later date??

2. if you use etching primer, do you have to primer(epoxy) while its still tacky??

the product you use should have instructions on how to use it. they usually say how long you have to put on another coat. after that you need to scuff up.

Por-15's primer is their metal ready product. If you are going to use Por-15 I would follow their directions to the letter and get the metal as clean as you can before you start painting.

Their Marine Clean product works pretty good on getting all the dirt/grime/oil off bare metal, then once it dries hitting it with the Metal Ready is the way to go, before you paint with the Por-15.

Just make sure you top coat the Por-15 while it is still a bit wet (slight finger drag). Por-15 works great IMHO if you follow all the directions to the letter and get everything super clean. Haven't had any problems yet.

I would uses a good epoxy primer, D.A. with 80 grit after you have sand blasted. Then go over it with epoxy. Just my 2 cents. Good luck.

Use self-etching for proper adhesion

When it comes to the 2nd coat of POR 15 you better be ready and on top of it. Don't run to the store between coats.

I have had it take 10 hrs on a beautiful sunny day and on a rainy day it took 2hrs to get just right for the 2nd coat, so make sure you are ready and it is important.

Sometimes you can sit and watch paint dry and you aren't crazy !!!

i have no experience with por-15, so i can't help there. epoxy primer is self etching, it can go right over bare metal, as long as you clean it with thinner or some type of metal cleaner. after epoxy has been sprayed you have 72 hours before you would need to scuff it. epoxy also keeps moisture out. in case you are wondering, i am currently finishing my second year at college in collision repair, and i am employed at the local g.m. dealership and am the head body, and frame technician.
