View Full Version : Do coil overs "settle" like regular springs?

Just finished the Vansteel rear coil over conversion on my 69 Corvette, and dropped the car down and its about 1" higher than I would like. I think I am at the lower limit on adjustment, so before I go looking for different rate springs (I think the ones I have now are 500) just wondered if anyone had experience with coilovers, whether they would settle a bit after a few miles etc etc.

Van Steel are using a 9" 500lb spring in the QA1 adjustable coil over(shoud really be a 10" spring, but they did the shorter one for adjustability).
Anyway, I have wound the lower perch down so there is still some "resistance" on the spring (I have about 4, maybe 5 threads showing from the bottom of the shock), any further and the coil becomes loose (the top collar can move) Obviously once there is weight on it, the shock compresses so does the spring and it would be tight in there, but I am guessing that I shouldnt be adjusting it that loose.

You might just need to get a shorter spring with the same rate or if its necessary you may have to also get a shorter shock. Either way you give up travel in the process. You can adjust the spring all the way down but you may end up hitting the bump stop if the shock isnt designed to go as low as you want. I would suggest getting shorter shocks. Also take a look at your geometry, excessive lowering can throw things off and negatively affect handling if you dump it in the weeds and not do anything to compensate for it.

They will settle, yes.

Right. Assuming the spring rate wasn't picked out of a hat, you should try a shorter spring for ride height adjustments, not a different rate.
